  1. Breath of Fire
  2.
  3. Platform: Snes / SFC
  4. Released (d.m.y):
  5. 03.04.1993 (J)
  6. 10.08.1994 (NA)
  7.
  8. Based on: NTSC-U/C-version (SNS-BF-USA)
  9.
  10.
  11.
  12. - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
  13. - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
  14. depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after crossing
  15. the Windia bridge, 6 after fighting Gremlin, 4 after fighting Octo, 2
  16. after obtaining the Merchant's Sphere, and 1 after Nina rejoins).
  17. - A more practical formula would be (ATP*Def/x)r.
  18. - Def is 100/DFP.
  19. - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
  20. - +1 is added at the end unless the random variable was 1,0.
  21. - Critical hits deal double damage.
  22. - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
  23. - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
  24. Karn (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
  25. evaded.
  26. - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
  27. the back row. Enemies can't defend.
  28. - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
  29. that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
  30. dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
  31. likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
  32. weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. While enemies also
  33. have rows, there are only four enemies that are in the back row (mainly
  34. archers).
  35.
  36. - Stats:
  37. Strength | Base ATP (Attack Power)
  38. Stamina | Base DFP (Defense Power)
  39. Agility | Base Act, Magic Defense (MAG/MDF)
  40. Wisdom | Base Intelligence, Magic Defense (MAG/MDF)
  41. Luck | Base Fate (critical hit rate)
  42.
  43. - The above five stats max out at 255. ATP and DFP max out at 511. HP
  44. and damage max out at 999.
  45. - Act = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
  46. random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
  47. game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
  48. - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
  49. - Magic Defense = Act/4+Int*0,75. Magic Defense only comes into play when
  50. defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage by (515-MDF)/600.
  51.
  52. - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
  53. doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
  54. the effect.
  55. - Support spells like Fort and ATK-Up increase a stat by a fixed number,
  56. and the effect doesn't stack.
  57. - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
  58. given round.
  59. - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
  60. are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
  61. and Armor-Piercing (P).
  62. - All enemies have an elemental affinity, and their physical attacks
  63. carry that element. That element is also their weakness. However, with
  64. no option to switch gear mid-battle, your ability to exploit the varying
  65. elemental weaknesses of normal enemies is limited. You'll mainly want
  66. to take note of the elemental weaknesses (W:) of bosses.
  67. - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
  68. the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
  69. protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
  70. processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
  71. first element detected is the only one that counts.
  72. - Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
  73. - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
  74. - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
  75. can deposit to storage.
  76. - Enemies, including bosses, have a visible HP bar. It's not entirely
  77. accurate for bosses, however, as nearly all bosses gain a second wind
  78. upon first reaching 0 HP. When this happens, a certain figure is added
  79. to both their current and max HP.
  80. - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
  81. you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
  82. point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
  83. at some other location.
  84. - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
  85. - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
  86. - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
  87. ones in the reserve.
  88. - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
  89. fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
  90. - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.
  91.

  179.
  180. - Grab the V.Ptn from the drawer as soon as you gain control. You can't
  181. get it later.
  182. - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
  183. they only increase a stat by 1.
  184. - Buy an ArmPad. You'll get a good weapon, helm, and shield in the first
  185. dungeon, so no need to buy those. Buy 3 Cloths, though. They'll come into
  186. play later.
  187. - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
  188. north to Camlon.
  189. × An Apple heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Herb, but it costs so much
  190. more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
  191. - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
  192. - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
  193. Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just
  194. the main menu). I set Menu to X, Inventory to L, Magic to R and Switch
  195. to A.
  196. - You can leave the menu instantly by pressing the Menu button.

  205.
  206. - Don't forget to use the handy auto-battle function when appropriate.
  207. You can cancel it by pressing Cancel.
  208. - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
  209. world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
  210. that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
  211. (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
  212. killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
  213. you often won't even have a chance to do.
  214. - If you manage to take out a white deer, you can sell the W.Ant for
  215. 1500 Z. You could certainly use the money.
  216. - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
  217. on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.
  218.
  219. - Let's have a look at Ryu's early game gear.

  300. - You will no longer have access to this area once you complete the
  301. events here.
  302. - You can only enter Nanai at night and, even then, you'll have to
  303. keep a distance to the guards.
  304. - You get 10% off all items in the armory, but you also get 10% less
  305. for any items you sell.
  306. - IronRP, LongSD, Hairband = 4950 Z
  307. × This is your only chance to buy an Iron Rapier. It's the strongest
  308. weapon Nina can have for a good while, but if you just have her using
  309. the Earth Key, it's not really needed. At the very least, buy a Long
  310. Sword. You can buy a Hairband in Drogen later.
  311. - You'll run into tougher battles below the first lava area.
  312. - The three seemingly elemental stones can be used during battle to
  313. deal fixed, non-elemental damage.

  320. - He can cast Spark (20 pod, 4 AP) and Cura (heal 40 HP, 6 AP).
  321. - Don't forget that even enemies get the low HP damage bonus.
  322.
  323. - After the battle, remove the key from the pedestal and use the
  324. teleporter. If you wait for a while after getting the key, you'll get
  325. a message saying that you'll get a game over if you hang around for
  326. too long, so don't do that.
  327. - You can use the Earth Key in battle to damage all enemies for 30 pod.
  328. There are many other similar items that allow characters like Nina to
  329. deal pretty good damage, but you should consider refraining from using
  330. them for a little extra challenge.

  428. - Two nameless Windia soldiers will join your party here. They're only
  429. temporary, but you could still buy them some gear in Romero if you'd
  430. like. They don't gain any levels, so that's the only way to make them
  431. a bit sturdier.
  432. - Soldier 2 is the fastest of the three characters (at least until Nina
  433. gets a level and a new armor), so he's the one who should be using the
  434. Earth Key initially.
  435. - You'll need the Iron Ore to obtain another key item a little later

  531.
  532. - Once you're in the other tower, have the soldiers switch back to their
  533. default gear and also have them equip the Cloths I told you to buy. Nina
  534. should replace the Gauntlet with the Bandage.
  535. - There's no way you can win the first or second battle with the wizard.
  536. Once the event is over, you'll switch back to Ryu, who will get a ride

  539. the last Cloth, so you can sell his armor.
  540. - The Rang is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
  541. The Rang hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
  542. bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
  543. stronger.
  544.
  545. [Boss: Wizard]
  546. - 169+11 HP, 4,17 Def, 40 ATP, 60 Act, 1000 xp, 700 Z
  547. - He uses Spark (10), Cold (15), and Fort (DFP +20 \ Def = 2,27). He has
  548. a 50% chance of evading your attack after casting Fort. He doesn't attack
  549. physically.
  550.
  551. - The Remedy doesn't actually show up in your inventory.

1402. characters involved are completely unavailable. They'll still gain Exp and
  1403. level up normally, though.
1404. - Shin fuses Karn with Bo and Gobi. In this form, he / they (?) can use
1405. Bo's field abilities with an improved hunting ability (shot is faster and
1406. covers 5 tiles). Oh, and his HP is tripled and the damage he deals is
1407. multiplied by 1,7. Karn also takes more physical damage when fused (+30-70%,

  1433.
1434. - And now would be a good time to have a look at the Free / Flea Market,
1435. which is currently at Phase 1 (you only have to go through a few more
1436. dungeons to reach Phase 2).
1437. - Go to the largest building in Prima, the one with the empty counter.
1438. With Gobi in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,
1439. and you're in action. You will then be approached by random fish dudes,
1440. who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
1441. an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
1442. can happen twice per customer.
1443. - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
1444. store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
1445. in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
1446. - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would
1447. sell for in a regular store. In other words, don't bother selling anything
  1448. here. It's not a good idea.
1449. - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed
1450. things up, go deposit all your items into the storage (or at least the ones
  1451. that can be sold).
1452. - You can use the ThundrRP during battle to deal 80 pod to a single target.
1453. Again, the weapon is actually non-elemental.
1454. - The AngleAR is close to the best armor for Nina and Bleu. In addition
1455. to having great stats (76/3), it also reflects 50% the base damage of
1456. magic (note that enemy spells sometimes use different values from the
1457. base values). There are a couple of stronger and lighter ones, which you
1458. won't be picking up anytime soon, but I'd mostly stick to the AngelAR.

1639. - Go talk to the guild master to obtain the MystSF and Sphere. The Sphere
1640. gives Gobi a new field ability that allows him to turn into giant fish.
1641. In this form, you can move more freely underwater. Head west underwater
1642. to reach Tunlan and Gust.
1643. - Having the Sphere also means that the flea market has reached Phase 2
1644. (although you have to leave and re-enter Prima before it actually takes
  1645. effect).
1646. - You should definitely get two DarkDR's; one for Karn (his ultimate
1647. weapon), one for Ryu (it'll take quite a while before he finds anything
  1648. stronger).
1649. - The Sleeper is Gobi's ultimate weapon.
1650. - I recommend getting three AgileHT's. You can find two more throughout
1651. the rest of the game.
1652. - Oh, and if you still don't have two AngleAR's, they're still there.
1653. - And, yeah, this is going to take a while. Maybe an hour or so. Better

1997. - This one is north of Nanai.
1998. - Here, you will receive Karn's third fusion spell, Doof, which fuses
1999. Karn with Bo and Ox (triple HP, 2,5x dmg). In this form, you can push
2000. large, heavy objects (such as the ones found in Gust and Bleak).
  2001.
  2002. ¤~~~~~~¤ Gust ¤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¤
  2003.
  2004. Item (nc): EarthRB (Unique)
  2005.
2006. - The EarthRB blocks seemingly all magical damage, while healing the
2007. character slightly whenever hit by a spell. I'd actually recommend
  2008. against using it.
  2009.
  2010. ¤~~~~~~¤ Bleak ¤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¤
  2011.
  2012. Item (nc): ClearCL (Unique)
  2013. Special: Puka
  2014.
2015. - The ClearCL is the strongest armor Nina and Bleu can wear with 100 DFP
2016. and 0 WGT. Although these stats are impressive, the AngleAR is still
2017. a good choice because of the reflect auto-ability.
2018. - Karn's final union spell, Puka, fuses him with Bo, Gobi and Ox. In
2019. this form, he gets 4x HP, does 2,5x damage and has a chance of doing a
2020. special rolling attack that does double dmg (and can still do criticals).
2021. On the field, he can open the sealed doors with dragon symbols on them.
2022. - Note that you can walk through the wall next to the old man's bed.
2023. This will take you outside the house, whereas taking the stairs takes
2024. you to the world map.
2025. - If you use Puka, you'll have to choose between Mogu and Bleu as your
2026. fourth party member. Until Mogu gets his HP up (say, above 200), you
  2027. should go with Bleu.

  2044.
2045. - This one is southwest of Gust.
2046. - The Love Bracelet regenerates 1 HP per step on the field. Only female
2047. characters can equip it, however.

2101. - The next dungeon is near Spring, south of Gramor.
2102. - You can run into some pretty tough enemies in the first area (Golem,
2103. BlazeX), but, sadly, they don't give you exceptional amounts of Xp or
2104. anything. BlazeX in particular is quite dangerous thanks to its spells.
2105. You'll start running into these two again at the end of the next dungeon
  2106. as well.
2107. - The Flame Armor is Mogu's strongest armor (outside of the EarthRB).
2108. - The hidden items are behind two of the pillars near the other staircase
  2109. on the bottom level.
2110. - Once you're inside the actual tower, you'll find that each floor is a

2152. - You'll start off in a town where you have access to basic town services
  2153. (no storage).
2154. - You can use the Trident in battle to deal 95 pod to all enemies.
2155. - The pot by the healing springs is actually a save point.
2156. - In the next area, you'll be walking on a narrow path with some panels
2157. that rotate the camera when you step on them. You can easily tell which
2158. way you were coming from, since you'll still be facing in the same
2159. direction after the rotation. However, there are many split paths, so
2160. you'll still likely end up struggling. There are no items in this area.
2161. × Here's where you need to go in each intersection (from the character's
2162. point of view): straight, left, straight, left, straight, left.
2163. - There's a hidden hole on the ground near the damaging yellow tiles
2164. in one of the rooms. You'll have to find it in order to proceed (simply
2165. stepping on it is enough).
2166. - And, finally, there's a room with five staircases leading up, but only
2167. one of them is real. Take the one on the bottom-right to reach the boss.
2168. - The remaining dungeons are nowhere near as hard, in case you're wondering.

2174. - Physical attacks decrease his blurriness, whereas magical attacks
2175. increase it. Magic does very limited damage initially. If you attack
2176. him enough physically to the point where he's no longer blurred, his

  2442.
2443. - As I already mentioned, the flea market has now reached the final phase.
2444. - Tuna fully heals the HP of a single character along with curing any
2445. status ailments (can't be stacked).
2446. - The MaskSH (65/8) is the strongest shield for most characters (everyone
2447. except Ryu and whoever is using the Star Shield). It's non-elemental and
2448. also has the reflect ability, just like the AngleAR, but unfortunately
2449. this one has a limited activation rate. Even so, it's still one of the
2450. best shields in the game. It's also pretty easy to get (about as common
  2451. as the G.Tiara).
2452. - The EvilRB is for Nina and Bleu (90/1). A good choice, since it halves
2453. damage from the common elements (Fire, Ice, Thunder), but I'd stick to
  2454. the Angel Armors.
2455. - The DwarfBW (150/1) is Bo's second strongest weapon, but it's preferable
2456. over the strongest one, since it's one-handed and Dark-elemental.
2457. - The PowerRP (82/0) is Nina's ultimate weapon, but, again, the Dark-
2458. elemental EvilRP (55/7) is preferable.
  2459. - The GlowCN (100/8) is Bleu's ultimate weapon.

2640. it's not that long or difficult, although there is that big room after
2641. Goda that's cloned three times for a total of four "instances." They're

  2656. - Attack all, Chill (100 \a), BoltX (400), Rub.
2657. - The more dangerous spells aren't used much. BoltX always hits the
  2658. first character.
  2659. - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Shield, Dispel,
2660. Wall), since they wear off after just one spell.
  2661.
2662. - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
2663. StarHR, and the area left of Jude's throne for the Emperor's Sword,
2664. Ryu's ultimate weapon (255/1), although the DarkDR can still deal a
2665. little more damage thanks to the elemental variable.
2666. - You can use the StarHR in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
2667. - You can use the EmporSD in battle to deal 180 pod to all enemies.
  2668.
2669. - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
2670. Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
2671. that you haven't done). Grab some healing items from storage (WMeat,
  2672. Moondrop).
2673. - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and WarHogX's in
2674. the Scande region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
2675. pretty high by default, but you should still use a Gown/SageML. Without
2676. Enc Up, it could take anywhere between 10-40 steps. With Enc Up, it'll
2677. never take much more than 8. You can get 50k in about 30 minutes. After
  2678. Lv50, each level requires 50-70k xp.
2679. - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
  2680.
  2681. [Boss: Miria]
  2682. - B: 28 000 HP, 0,4 Def, W:D, 300 ATP, 80 Act
  2683. - C: 31 000 HP, 0,196 Def, W:D, 510 ATP, 220 Act
2684. - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Agni, so that you
2685. can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Agni can only be used
2686. when all characters are alive, and Karn isn't fused.
2687. - B: She only uses normal attacks and Chill (100 pod to all).
2688. - C: She only uses normal attacks and Comet c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
2689. is quite high, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with
2690. lower HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
2691. - Reflect doesn't really help here, so give Nina an EvilRB.
2692. - Agni will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you try to beat
2693. her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip the BrokenSD,
2694. as it triggers a special guest appearance during the ending.
  2695.
