  1. Breath of Fire
  2.
  3. Platform: Snes / SFC
  4. Released (d.m.y):
  5. 03.04.1993 (J)
  6. 10.08.1994 (NA)
  7.
  8. Based on: NTSC-U/C-version (SNS-BF-USA)
  9.
  10.
  11.
  12. - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
  13. - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
  14. depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after fighting
  15. Knight, 6 after fighting Gremlin, 4 after Ox joins, 2 after obtaining
  16. the Merchant's Sphere and 1 after Nina rejoins).
  17. - A more practical formula (for damage dealt) would be ATP*Def*xr.
  18. - Def is 100/DFP.
  19. - x is 0,1 initially, 0,125 after fighting Knight, 1/6 after fighting
  20. Gremlin, 0,25 after Ox joins, 0,5 after obtaining the Sphere, and 1
  21. after Nina rejoins.
  22. - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
  23. - Critical hits deal double damage.
  24. - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
  25. - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
  26. Karn (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
  27. evaded.
  28. - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
  29. the back row. Enemies can't defend.
  30. - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
  31. that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
  32. dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
  33. likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
  34. weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. Enemies don't have
  35. rows.
  36.
  37. - Stats:
  38. Strength | Base ATP
  39. Stamina | Base DFP
  40. Agility | Base Act, Magic Defense (MAG)
  41. Wisdom | Base Intelligence, Magic Defense (MAG)
  42. Luck | Base Fate (critical hit rate)
  43.
  44. - The above five stats max out at 255.
  45. - ATP and DFP max out at 511.
  46. - ACT = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
  47. random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
  48. game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
  49. - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
  50. - Magic Defense = Act/4+Int*0,75. Magic Defense only comes into play when
  51. defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage by (515-MDF)/600.
  52. - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
  53. doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
  54. the effect.
  55. - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
  56. given round.
  57. - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
  58. are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
  59. and 'Crush' (C).
  60. - I've only listed elemental weaknesses (W:) for bosses.
  61. - Most enemies indeed have an elemental affinity, in which case their
  62. physical attacks and special attacks carry that element.
  63. - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
  64. the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
  65. protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
  66. processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
  67. first element detected is the only one that counts.
  68. × Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
  69. - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
  70. - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
  71. can deposit to storage.
  72. - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
  73. you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
  74. point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
  75. at some other location.
  76. - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
  77. - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
  78. - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
  79. ones in the reserve.
  80. - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
  81. fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
  82. - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.
  83.
  84. - Healing Items (s: stacks)
  85. Herb s| 50 HP Acorn s| 20 AP
  86. Meat s| 70 HP \all W.Ant | 100 AP

  94. Sleep | Unable to act.
  95. Zombie | ATP = 5 or 2x & DFP = 1 or 10 (day / night)

  164.
  165. - Grab the V.Ptn from the drawer as soon as you gain control. You can't
  166. get it later.
  167. - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
  168. they only increase a stat by 1.
  169. - Buy an ArmPad. You'll get a good weapon in the first dungeon, so no
  170. need to buy one.
  171. - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
  172. north to Camlon.
  173. × An Apple heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Herb, but it costs so much
  174. more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
  175. - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
  176. - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
  177. Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just
  178. the main menu). I set Menu to X, Inventory to L, Magic to R and Switch
  179. to A.
  180. - You can leave the menu instantly by pressing the Menu button.

  186.
  187. - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
  188. world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
  189. that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
  190. (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
  191. killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
  192. you often won't even have a chance to do.
  193. - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
  194. on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.

  227. - You can only enter Nanai at night and, even then, you'll have to
  228. keep a distance to the guards.
  229. - You get 10% off all items in the armory, but you also get 10% less
  230. for any items you sell.
  231. - IronRP, LongSD, Hairband = 4950 Z
  232. - The three seemingly elemental stones can be used during battle to

  241. - After the battle, remove the key from the pedestal and use the
  242. teleporter. If you wait for a while after getting the key, you'll get
  243. a message saying that you'll get a game over if you hang around for
  244. too long, so don't do that.

  261. - This is the first time you have access to the storage. Drop off any
  262. money and items you won't need immediately.
  263. - You probably won't have the money to buy the Chainmail, but you can
  264. fairly easily fix that by heading to the cave west. The guards won't let
  265. you farther into the cave, but you still have enough room to get into
  266. encounters. You can easily end the battles in one round with the Earth
  267. Key. Make sure you sort your inventory, so that it's easily available
  268. at the top of the list.
  269. - De-equip your Gauntlet for Nina. If you already sold your WoodSH,
  270. she'll have to make do with the SuedeSH (and, later, Bandage).
  271. - Once you're prepared, head inside the castle, and talk to the queen.
  272. After some dialog, you'll find yourself in control of Nina, while Ryu
  273. is taking a break.
  274. - Her default equipment is quite modest (get used to that), which is
  275. exactly why I told you to buy that stuff from Nanai (IronRP, Hairband),
  276. although it's not that big a deal if you missed it.
  277. - Her initial spells include: Cura, Fort, Heal.
  278. - Note that Nina starts off in the back row.
  279. - Nina levels up much faster than other characters between Lv29-46.

  293. Default (Soldier 1 / 2): Pole, SuedeSH, SuedeGN, SuedeHT
  294. - Two nameless Windia soldiers will join your party here. They are only
  295. temporary, so don't bother getting them any new equipment or anything.
  296. They won't even gain any levels.
  297. - Soldier 2 is the fastest of the three characters (at least until Nina
  298. gets a level and a new armor), so he's the one who should be using the
  299. Earth Key initially.
  300. - You'll need the Iron Ore to obtain another key item a little later
  301. in the game.

  314. pressing Start, only usable on the overworld).
  315. - BronzHT + Gown = 3200 Z.
  316. - Keep in mind, if Nina's the lead character and she's equipped with the
  317. Gown, you'll attract encounters more frequently (I wonder why).

  326. yellow ones are bad (-10 HP). They won't even despawn; you can use them
  327. as many times as you want.
  328. - The S.Ptn is completely hidden behind the very first tree.
  329. - One of the Herbs is also completely hidden behind a tree (near the
  330. Bandage).
  331. - Next up is the W.Ptn (again completely hidden), which unfortunately
  332. isn't close to anything in particular other than one of the crossroads.
  333. - And, finally, the A.Ptn is hidden behind one of the trees near the
  334. exit.
  335. - The DkKiss can be used during battle and has a chance of causing
  336. instant death. You should probably just sell them for 100 Z each.

  343. Bosses: Morte, Mortea, Wizard
  344. - You'll find two healing springs on the first floor.
  345. - You'll fight Morte on the first floor and Mortea on the third.
  346. - On the second floor, go clockwise (to find two items), then counter-
  347. clockwise. On the third, go counter-clockwise, then clockwise. Get the
  348. last item on the third floor (by the four holes), then jump down the
  349. right hole on the second floor.
  350. - The Life2 fully restores a single character (dead or alive). These
  351. are ideal for restoring AP, but if you're in a sticky situation, you
  352. can certainly use one for reviving as well (Nina can start reviving
  353. characters with full HP once she hits Lv34). You'll never be able to
  354. buy these, but you'll find a bunch of them on the field, and there are
  355. a few enemies that can drop them.

  362. - 202+28 HP, 156% Def, 280 xp, 200 Z
  363.
  364. - There's no way you can win the first or second battle with the wizard.
  365. Once the event is over, you'll switch back to Ryu, who will get a ride
  366. to the top of the tower. You'll also be briefly assisted by Soldier 3.
  367. - The Rang is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
  368. The Rang hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
  369. bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
  370. stronger.
  371.
  372. [Boss: Wizard]
  373. - 169+11 HP, 417% Def, 1000 xp, 700 Z
  374.

  376.
  377. - After the event in Windia, you're free to travel east across the bridge

  842.
  843. [Boss]
  844. - 756+744 HP, 185% Def, W:FL, 3200 xp, 3000 Z
  845. - Use Nina's Zom1 or Zom2 for Light-elemental damage.
  846.
  847. - Ox will join the party after the battle. His field ability allows him
  848. to take out weakened walls and boulders, and he can also punch trees to
  849. make Pokemon fall off (or something). He's not strong enough to push
  850. heavy objects, though.
  851. × Apple, C.Nut
  852. - Ox also knows a couple of spells: Cura3, Heal
  853. - At this point, you will also receive the inventory upgrade, which
  854. boosts the number of slots from 48 to 63 (3x21).
  855.
  856. \\\ Agua ||
  857. Items: 3000 Z, Life, Life2, SilverBR (Artifact)
  858. - Apparently, the SilverBR lowers the encounter rate, but only if it's
  859. worn by the lead character.
  860. - We won't be having any more business in Agua for a while, so feel
  861. free to store the Tablet.
  862.
  863. Items: A.Ptn, L.Ptn \\\ Bleak Cave ||
  864.
  865. Item (nc): B.Rang (Unique, Temp) \\\ Krypt ||
  866. - This is probably the last time you need to visit Krypt, so feel free
  867. to store the Fife at this point.
  868.
  869. Special: Shin \\\ Guntz ||
  870. - The old man in the hidden room will teach Karn a union ability. Being
  871. fused prevents Karn from using his native field abilities, while the
  872. other characters involved are completely unavailable.
  873. × Shin fuses Karn with Bo and Gobi. In this form, he / they (?) can
  874. use Bo's field abilities with an improved hunting ability (shot is
  875. faster and covers 5 tiles). Oh, and his HP is tripled and the damage
  876. he deals is multiplied by 1,7. Karn also takes more physical damage
  877. when fused (+30-70%, depending on the form), but the HP boost more
  878. than makes up for it.
  879.
  880. \\\ Sea Volcano ||
  881. Items: SharpBW (Unique), 3000 Z, M.Drop, 2000 Z, PowerDR, Herb
  882. - (North of Prima)
  883. - If you already got the SharpBW earlier, you don't really need to
  884. come back for the rest of the items. You can just get them when you're
  885. actually supposed to come here.
  886. - The AmeblobX's can get rather dangerous what with their LStorm
  887. dealing 95 pod. It can hit your entire party if the lead character
  888. is targeted.
  889. - The Sharp Bow is the first of the two single-handed weapons Bo can use.
  890.
  891. \\\ Prima ||
  892. - And now would be a good time to have a look at the Free / Flea Market,
  893. which is currently at Phase 1 (you only have to go through a few more
  894. dungeons to reach Phase 2).
  895. - Go to the largest building in Prima, the one with the empty counter.
  896. With Gobi in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,
  897. and you're in action. You will then be approached by random fish dudes,
  898. who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
  899. an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
  900. can happen twice per customer.
  901. - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
  902. store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
  903. in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
  904. - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would
  905. sell for in a regular store. In other words, don't bother selling anything
  906. here. It's not a good idea.
  907. - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed
  908. things up, go deposit all your items into the storage (or at least the ones
  909. that can be sold).
  910. - You can use the ThundrRP during battle to deal 80 pod to a single target.
  911. Again, the weapon is actually non-elemental.
  912. - The AngleAR is close to the best armor for Nina and Bleu. In addition
  913. to having great stats (76/3), it also reflects 50% of any magical damage
  914. the character receives. There are a couple of stronger and lighter ones
  915. which you won't be picking up any time soon, but once you do, feel free
  916. to use those instead if you feel that you have no need for reflect.

  939. - Travel west from Prima to reach this place.
  940. - The EchoHT reflects some (1/8) of the magical damage the wearer receives.
  941. - You'll fight the boss as soon as you go down the stairs at the other end.
  942.
  943. [Boss]

  947. - Talk to the elder, and he'll fix your Boomerang for you (you know,
  948. the B.Rang you picked up in the Krypt?).
  949. - Now, head east to the Boomerang guy and show it to him.

  956. - 1250+750 HP, 200% Def, W:I, 4200 xp, 4800 Z
  957.
  958. - After getting the egg, slowly lead one of the birds out of the forest.
  959. If it's no longer with you when you get to the overworld, you have to
  960. go back and try again. Assuming one of them follows you out of the
  961. forest, you'll be able to enter the castle now.
  962.
  963. \\\ Nabal Fortress ||
  964. Items: MagicRG (Unique), Cure
  965. Items (nc): Life2, SkullRG (Unique), Clog (Artifact)
  966. - Search under the pots for the first two nc-items.
  967. × The Skull Ring gives you +10 DFP, but it might also make you more
  968. vulnerable to Instant Death.
  969. - Unfortunately, you'll be teleported back to Prima after the fixed
  970. encounter with the Slime Devil(s), so you'll have to walk all the way
  971. back to get the two chests and the Clog, which is hidden at the end of
  972. the pier.
  973.
  974. Item (nc): Statue (Unique, Temp) \\\ Prima ||
  975. - Talk to the sleeping guy on the second floor of the guild, then
  976. examine his bed to find the Statue, which allows you to enter the

  983. Bosses: Wisp, Cloud, Myst
  984.
  985. - You can use the RageHR in battle to deal 60 pod to a single target.
  986. Not quite as good as the two elemental rapiers, but worth mentioning.

1018. Items: MystSF (Unique), Sphere (Unique)
1019. - Go talk to the guild master to obtain the MystSF and Sphere. The
1020. Sphere gives Gobi a new field ability that allows him to turn into
1021. giant fish. In this form, you can move more freely underwater.
1022. - Having the Sphere also means that the flea market has reached Phase 2
1023. (although you have to leave and re-enter Prima before it actually takes
  1024. effect).
1025. - You should definitely get two DarkDR's; one for Karn (his ultimate
1026. weapon), one for Ryu (it'll take quite a while before he finds anything
  1027. stronger).
1028. - The Sleeper is Gobi's ultimate weapon.
1029. - I recommend getting three AgileHT's. You can find two more throughout

  1273.
1274. - Note that you can run into some pretty tough enemies in the first
1275. area (Golem, BlazeX). BlazeX in particular is quite dangerous, as it
1276. can deal 400 pod to a single target with BoltX. Unfortunately, they
1277. don't give you exceptional amounts of Xp or anything. You'll start
1278. running into them again at the end of the next dungeon as well.
1279. - The Flame Armor is Mogu's strongest armor (outside of the EarthRB).
1280. - The hidden items are behind two of the pillars near the other staircase
  1281. on the bottom level.
1282. - Once you're inside the actual tower, you'll find that each floor is

1305. - You can use the Trident in battle to deal 95 pod to all enemies.
1306. - The pot by the healing springs is actually a save point.
1307. - In the next area, you'll be walking on a narrow path with some panels
1308. that rotate the camera when you step on them. You can easily tell which
1309. way you were coming from, since you'll still be facing in the same
1310. direction after the rotation. However, there are many split paths, so
1311. you'll still likely end up struggling. There are no items in this area.
1312. × Here's where you need to go in each intersection (from the character's
1313. point of view): straight, left, straight, left, straight, left.
1314. - There's a hidden hole on the ground near the damaging yellow tiles
1315. in one of the rooms. You'll have to find it in order to proceed (simply
1316. stepping on it is enough).
1317. - And, finally, there's a room with five staircases leading up, but

1374. - The Icy Armor is pretty much the best armor for Ox. The WorldAR may
1375. be 1 point lighter, but this one also give him some elemental resistance.
1376. You might want to hang on to Ox's old WorldML, so Mogu can use it for
1377. Thunder resistance (provided he has a non-elemental shield). Without
1378. it, he'll get killed by a single BoltX, although it's nothing a quick

1645. - Again, the BlazeX's can cast BoltX (400 pod).
1646. - There are no save points in the final dungeon, I'm afraid. Then again,
1647. it's not that long or difficult. Although, there is that big room after
1648. Goda that's cloned three times for a total of 4 "instances." They're
1649. basically identical. They all lead to the same place, and there doesn't
1650. seem to be any items, so don't bother going through each of them.
  1651.
  1652. [Boss: Goda]
  1653. - 5504 + 5496 HP, 45% Def, W:C, 6000 xp, 6000 Z
1654. - Goda doesn't use any magic at all.
  1655.
1656. - When you finally reach Judas, he'll ask if you'd be interested in
1657. joining him. If you accept his offer, you can serve as his goon for a
1658. while, which means you'll be fighting a bunch of fixed encounters for
  1659. his entertainment.
  1660.
  1661. [Boss: Jade]
  1662. - 21 876 + 3124 HP, 42% Def, W:D, 8000 xp, 8000 Z
1663. - His two most dangerous attacks are BoltX (400 pod, always used on
1664. the first character) and Rub. He doesn't use either one often, though.
  1665. - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Shield, Dispel,
1666. Wall), since they wear off after just one spell.
  1667.
1668. - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
1669. StarHR, and the area left of Jude's throne for the Emperor's Sword,
1670. Ryu's ultimate weapon (255/1)(although the DarkDR can still deal a
1671. little more damage thanks to the elemental variable)..
1672. - You can use the StarHR in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
1673. - You can use the EmporSD in battle to deal 180 pod to all enemies.
  1674.
1675. - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
1676. Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
  1677. that you haven't done).
1678. - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and WarHogX's in
1679. the Scande region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
1680. pretty high by default, so using the Gown or SageML won't make a big
1681. difference. Either way, you can get about 50k in 30 minutes. After Lv50,
1682. each level requires 50-70k xp.
1683. - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
  1684.
  1685. [Boss: Miria]
  1686. - B: 28 000 HP, 40% Def, W:D
  1687. - C: 31 000 HP, 19,6% Def, W:D
1688. - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Agni, so that you
1689. can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Agni can only be used
1690. when all characters are alive, and Karn isn't fused.
1691. - B: She only uses normal attacks and Chill (100 pod to all).
1692. - C: She only uses normal attacks and Comet c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
1693. is 510, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with lower
1694. HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
1695. - Agni will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you try to beat
1696. her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip the BrokenSD,
1697. as it triggers a special guest appearance during the ending.
  1698.
  1699.
  1700.
  1701.
  1702.
  1703.
  1704. End of file.
