- Breath of Fire
- Platform: Snes / SFC
- Released (d.m.y):
- 03.04.1993 (J)
- 10.08.1994 (NA)
- Based on: NTSC-U/C-version (SNS-BF-USA)
- - The game doesn't track your play time. Consider tracking it manually.
- - Technically, physical damage is (ATP/(target DFP*x/100))r, where x
- depends on how far you are into the game (10 initially, 8 after fighting
- Knight, 6 after fighting Gremlin, 4 after Ox joins, 2 after obtaining
- the Merchant's Sphere and 1 after Nina rejoins).
- - A more practical formula (for damage dealt) would be ATP*Def*xr.
- - Def is 100/DFP.
- - x is 0,1 initially, 0,125 after fighting Knight, 1/6 after fighting
- Gremlin, 0,25 after Ox joins, 0,5 after obtaining the Sphere, and 1
- after Nina rejoins.
- - r is the random variable: 0,8; 0,9; 1,0; 1,1; or 1,2.
- - Critical hits deal double damage.
- - A subject deals 1,3125x physical damage when below 1/8 HP.
- - Three characters are able to counter physical attacks: Ryuu (1/16),
- Karn (1/8) and Mogu (5/32). Counters can occur even if an attack is
- evaded.
- - Defending reduces physical damage by 22% in the front row and 30% in
- the back row. Enemies can't defend.
- - Being in the back row reduces physical damage received by an amount
- that varies depending on the attack (such as 16% or 4%). Physical damage
- dealt is also reduced by making the 1,1 and 1,2 random variables less
- likely to be used, thus reducing damage output by roughly 10%. Ranged
- weapons, such as bows and boomerangs, are unaffected. Enemies don't have
- rows.
- - Stats:
- Strength | Base ATP
- Stamina | Base DFP
- Agility | Base Act, Magic Defense (MAG)
- Wisdom | Base Intelligence, Magic Defense (MAG)
- Luck | Base Fate (critical hit rate)
- - The above five stats max out at 255.
- - ATP and DFP max out at 511.
- - ACT = Agility - Equipment weight. Act determines turn order (with no
- random variation), evade rate, and chance to escape. When escaping, the
- game only checks the Act of the first character (alive or not).
- - Wisdom affects the hit rate of status ailments.
- - Magic Defense = Act/4+Int*0,75. Magic Defense only comes into play when
- defending. Specifically, it multiplies magical damage by (515-MDF)/600.
- - Magic deals fixed base damage. When magic is used during battle, it
- doesn't actually display the name of the spell, but rather it describes
- the effect.
- - Characters casting healing or support magic will act first during a
- given round.
- - Hitting an elemental weakness increases damage by 50%. The elements
- are: Fire (F), Ice (I), Thunder (T), Light (L), Dark (D), Anti-Air (A),
- and 'Crush' (C).
- - I've only listed elemental weaknesses (W:) for bosses.
- - Most enemies indeed have an elemental affinity, in which case their
- physical attacks and special attacks carry that element.
- - Equipment that provides elemental resistance will reduce damage from
- the element by 25%. However, different pieces of equipment cannot provide
- protection to multiple elements simultaneously, as the element check
- processes equipment in order of shield, body armor, and helmet, and the
- first element detected is the only one that counts.
- × Equipment can only provide resistance to Fire, Ice, Thunder, and Light.
- - Inventory: 48 (later 63) slots | Storage: 126 slots.
- - You can carry at most 999 999 Zenny. This is also the max amount you
- can deposit to storage.
- - The game's game over policy is the "golden parachute;" when you die,
- you lose half of the money you're carrying and end up at the last save
- point you used. If you can't return to that save point, you'll end up
- at some other location.
- - Level up gains are randomized to an extent.
- - The game doesn't tell you how much Exp is needed for the next level.
- - Exp is equally divided among all living party members, including the
- ones in the reserve.
- - You receive an Experience and Zenny bonus if you finish a battle in
- fewer than 7 rounds (at most a 50% bonus for a single round victory).
- - Enemies in BoF1 have no equipment drops whatsoever.

- - Grab the V.Ptn from the drawer as soon as you gain control. You can't
- get it later.
- - There's only a small, limited number of stat boosters to be found, and
- they only increase a stat by 1.
- - Buy an ArmPad. You'll get a good weapon in the first dungeon, so no
- need to buy one.
- - Buy a bunch of Herbs and a few Antidotes and level up before you head
- north to Camlon.
- × An Apple heals 60 HP vs. the 50 HP of a Herb, but it costs so much
- more, making it a terrible waste of your money.
- - You can rest by talking to the old woman.
- - In the settings, you can change the Confirm and Cancel buttons (I use
- Y for Confirm) as well as set hotkeys for different sub-menus (or just

- - After a battle, there's a chance that animals will spawn in the over-
- world. You'll soon be able to hunt them for healing items. Even before
- that, it's possible to kill deers if you get them cornered and just wait
- (I guess they die from a heart attack or something). Boars can also be
- killed in a similar way, but you need to trap them in a dead end, which
- you often won't even have a chance to do.
- - Ryu's field ability is fishing (which is mostly done in wells found
- on the overworld), but it's not very useful until later in the game.

- - This is the first time you have access to the storage. Drop off any
- money and items you won't need immediately.
- - You probably won't have the money to buy the Chainmail, but you can
- fairly easily fix that by heading to the cave west. The guards won't let
- you farther into the cave, but you still have enough room to get into
- encounters. You can easily end the battles in one round with the Earth
- Key. Make sure you sort your inventory, so that it's easily available
- at the top of the list.
- - De-equip your Gauntlet for Nina. If you already sold your WoodSH,
- she'll have to make do with the SuedeSH (and, later, Bandage).
- - Once you're prepared, head inside the castle, and talk to the queen.
- After some dialog, you'll find yourself in control of Nina, while Ryu
- is taking a break.
- - Her default equipment is quite modest (get used to that), which is
- exactly why I told you to buy that stuff from Nanai (IronRP, Hairband),
- although it's not that big a deal if you missed it.
- - Her initial spells include: Cura, Fort, Heal.
- - Note that Nina starts off in the back row.

- They won't even gain any levels.
- - Soldier 2 is the fastest of the three characters (at least until Nina

- clockwise. On the third, go counter-clockwise, then clockwise. Get the
- last item on the third floor (by the four holes), then jump down the
- right hole on the second floor.
- - The Life2 fully restores a single character (dead or alive). These
- are ideal for restoring AP, but if you're in a sticky situation, you
- can certainly use one for reviving as well (Nina can start reviving
- characters with full HP once she hits Lv34). You'll never be able to
- buy these, but you'll find a bunch of them on the field, and there are
- a few enemies that can drop them.

- to the top of the tower. You'll also be briefly assisted by Soldier 3.
- - The Rang is in the same room as the wizard. Grab it before fighting him.
- The Rang hits all targets, so it's a good choice for normal battles. For
- bosses, you should switch to a single-target weapon, as they're usually
- stronger.

- With Gobi in the lead, approach the counter from behind, press Confirm,
- and you're in action. You will then be approached by random fish dudes,
- who will offer to either buy or sell an item (or items). When you refuse
- an offer, there's a chance they'll give you a better offer. At best, this
- can happen twice per customer.
- - The starting price is always 60% of what it would cost in a regular
- store (although, as I've mentioned, very few of these items are available
- in stores). You can haggle it to as low as 35%, but this rarely happens.
- - When selling an item, the initial offer is always 50% of what it would

- here. It's not a good idea.
- - It will take quite a while to get everything you need. In order to speed

- - You can use the ThundrRP during battle to deal 80 pod to a single target.

- - And, finally, open the door to the treasure room.
- \\\ Gramor ||
- - Be warned: once inside Mogu's Dream, you won't be able to leave
- until you're finished.
- \\\ North Tower ||
- - All you need to do is go talk to the little kid hanging out by the
- staircase (you can try and fight him, but you can't beat him yet). This
- can be rather difficult, however, thanks to the invisible walls. If you
- go counter-clockwise at the beginning, it will likely be much easier.
- - Head back to the village and talk to the mole (Anne) waiting for you
- outside. In town, talk to the other mole in the house where Anne is.
- - You should now be able to reach the Poison Field.
- \\\ Poison Field ||

- Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
- Wraith | 220 | 125% | 600 | 300 |
- WarHogX | 280 | 100% | 1360 | 480 |
- - Mogu will join the party after passing through the field. If you don't
- really have any good gear for him, that's fine. He starts off with less
- than 100 HP, so you shouldn't bother using him yet anyway.
- - Most of Mogu's weapons are two-handed.
- - Mogu's field ability is digging.
- Boss: Mothro \\\ North Tower ||
- - You'll have to make it all the way to the top this time (four floors).
- [Boss]
- - 3500 HP, 83% Def, 6000 xp, 8000 Z
- - The dream will end after the battle.
- Dig: Root (Unique, Temp) \\\ Gramor Region ||
- - Have Mogu dig in front of one of the strange plants near Gramor
- to obtain the Root. You'll need this for a story event later. You
- can't even get rid of it.
- \\\ Underground Chamber ||
- Items: L.Ptn, Clog (Artifact), V.Ptn, A.Ptn
- - This "dig mark" is east of where the Stone Robot originally was.
- Special: Doof \\\ Underground Chamber ||
- - This one is north of Nanai.
- - Here, you will receive Karn's third fusion spell, Doof.
- × Fuses Karn with Bo and Ox (triple HP, 2,5x dmg). In this form, you
- can push large, heavy objects (such as the ones found in Gust and Bleak).
- Item (nc): EarthRB (Unique) \\\ Gust ||
- - The EarthRB blocks seemingly all magical damage, while healing the
- character slightly whenever hit by a spell. I'd actually recommend
- against using it.
- Item (nc): ClearCL (Unique) \\\ Bleak ||
- Special: Puka
- - The ClearCL is the strongest armor Nina and Bleu can wear with 100 DFP
- and 0 WGT. Although these stats are impressive, the AngleAR is still
- a good choice because of the reflect auto-ability.
- - Karn's final union spell, Puka, fuses him with Bo, Gobi and Ox. In
- this form, he gets 4x HP, does 2,5x damage and has a chance of doing a
- special rolling attack that does double dmg (and can still do criticals).
- On the field, he can open the sealed doors with dragon symbols on them.
- - Note that you can walk through the wall next to the old man's bed.
- This will take you outside the house, whereas taking the stairs takes
- you to the world map.
- - If you use Puka, you'll have to choose between Mogu and Bleu as your
- fourth party member. Until Mogu gets his HP up (say, above 200), you
- should go with Bleu.
- Item (nc): LoveHT (Artifact) \\\ Tunlan ||
- - Talk to the woman with red hair as Puka, then check between the plants.
- Item: DarkBR (Unique) \\\ Sealed Chamber ||
- - This one's near Auria.
- Item: LoveBR (Unique) \\\ Sealed Chamber ||

- - The Love Bracelet regenerates 1 HP per step on the field. Only female
- characters can equip it, however.

- Item (nc): S.Ptn, Cure2
- Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
- Phoenix | 240 | 167% | 720 | 360 |
- Golem | 3000 | 143% | 1290 | 540 |
- BlazeX | 2400 | 125% | 840 | 200 |
- - Note that you can run into some pretty tough enemies in the first
- area (Golem, BlazeX). BlazeX in particular is quite dangerous, as it
- can deal 400 pod to a single target with BoltX. Unfortunately, they
- don't give you exceptional amounts of Xp or anything. You'll start
- running into them again at the end of the next dungeon as well.
- - The Flame Armor is Mogu's strongest armor (outside of the EarthRB).
- - The hidden items are behind two of the pillars near the other staircase
- on the bottom level.
- - Once you're inside the actual tower, you'll find that each floor is
- a large, open area with nothing there other than the two staircases.
- Below you can see where the ascending staircases are.
- 1F (grass) | NE
- 2F (rain) | SW
- 3F (desert) | SE
- 4F (snow) | NE
- 5F (sky) | SW
- 6F (space) | North
- - If you want to leave, there are some openings on the second and fourth
- floors that you can jump off of.
- - As you try to pick up the key on the 6th floor, you'll be dragged into
- Mote's dream.
- \\\ Mote's Tower ||

- CursedHT (Unique), FaceMask
- Boss: Mote
- Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
- M.Flea | 100 | 25% | 1680 | 400 |
- - You'll start off in a town where you have access to basic town services
- (no storage).
- - You can use the Trident in battle to deal 95 pod to all enemies.
- - The pot by the healing springs is actually a save point.
- - In the next area, you'll be walking on a narrow path with some panels
- that rotate the camera when you step on them. You can easily tell which
- way you were coming from, since you'll still be facing in the same
- direction after the rotation. However, there are many split paths, so
- you'll still likely end up struggling. There are no items in this area.
- × Here's where you need to go in each intersection (from the character's
- point of view): straight, left, straight, left, straight, left.
- - There's a hidden hole on the ground near the damaging yellow tiles
- in one of the rooms. You'll have to find it in order to proceed (simply
- stepping on it is enough).
- - And, finally, there's a room with five staircases leading up, but
- only one of them is real. Take the one on the bottom-right to reach
- the boss.
- - The remaining dungeons are nowhere near as hard, in case you're
- wondering.
- [Boss]
- - 5628+3372 HP, 125% / 31% Def, W:A, 5400 xp, 6000 Z
- - Physical attacks decrease his blurriness, whereas magical attacks
- increase it. Magic does very limited damage initially. If you attack
- him enough physically to the point where he's no longer blurred, his
- defense will increase, but at the same time, magic will start doing
- normal damage (at least for one attack, that is).
- Item (nc): SkyKey (Unique, Temp) \\\ Spyre ||

- D.Rider | 44 | 333% | 50 | 30 |
- Widow | 300 | 100% | 1400 | 450 |
- - The EvilCN restores Bleu's AP by 3 whenever she attacks.
- - The Icy Armor is pretty much the best armor for Ox. The WorldAR may
- be 1 point lighter, but this one also give him some elemental resistance.
- You might want to hang on to Ox's old WorldML, so Mogu can use it for
- Thunder resistance (provided he has a non-elemental shield). Without
- it, he'll get killed by a single BoltX, although it's nothing a quick
- reviving spell or item can't fix, so it's really not a big deal. You
- can encounter BlazeX's again in the first half of the final dungeon,
- but no other (normal) enemy uses it.
- - After the event at the top of the tower, you'll find yourself on
- the world map, separated from the rest of your party. You'll have to
- make it back to Carmen with Ryu alone (getting hit with a death spell
- does the job).
- - Return to the tower.
- [Boss]
- - The battle ends before you get the chance to finish her off.
- - You'll be separated from your party again except this time Nina's
- with you as well, so you can just use Warp if you want.
- - The MystSD is on the top floor of the tower, so you'll have to make
- one more trip there if you want it.
- \\\ Carmen ||
- - Go see Elan in one of the houses, then return to the fortress southeast.
- - Oh, and, you'll soon enter the third and final phase of the flea market.
- If there's any Phase 2 items that you still want (AgileHT, DarkDR, Sleeper),
- better get them now.
- Item: TmKey (Unique, Temp) \\\ Cerl's Castle ||
- - Assuming you have the Fruit, you should be able to proceed. Nina will
- go MIA for a while.
- \\\ Tunlan ||
- - Hit the palm trees on the island to get a coconut.
- - Go talk to Nina in one of the apartments.
- - Now, go pick up some fishing gear, and explore the area south of
- where Cerl's castle used to be.
- Fish: P.Fish \\\ Scande Region ||
- - You'll eventually find a ruined bridge that used to allow people to
- cross the poison lake. Either that, or it was just built that way. Either
- way, whip out your rod and get the fish.
- - And that's the last of the four items needed to cure Nina's amnesia.
- In case you haven't been paying attention, here's a recap:
- 1. W.Ant
- × Hunting white deer. You could also find four of them in fixed
- locations (Forest Fortress, Auria, Bleak, Carmen)
- 2. C.Nut
- × Punch palm trees
- 3. Root
- × Dig in front of the strange plant near Gramor.
- 4. P.Fish

- - The LoyalRP restores Nina's AP by 3 whenever she attacks.
- - You can use the IcyCW in battle to deal 60 pod to a single target.
- - The PowerHT increases the damage you receive from certain attacks.
- Not recommended.
- - Go pick up the Tonic from the medicine man.
- - When you leave the building, you'll see a suspicious character hanging
- out by the trees and that water thing. Talk to him and examine the area
- where he was standing to find the Pass.
- \\\ Tunlan ||
- - Nina will rejoin the party.
- - She now has a new field ability that allows her to turn into a bird.
- Shockingly, in this form, you can fly around and reach a few new places

- - At this point, the flea market / free market has reached Phase 3.

- - This island is also home to the M.Slime, who's worth pretty good xp
- and Zenny. They're a bit uncommon, though, and I'd say you're better
- off leveling up in the Scande Region.

- - Solo with Ryuu.
- - Okay, this guy's actually pretty tough.
- - Rudra, aka Kaiser, deals 320 pod (T).
- Special: Agni \\\ Cleansing Water Cave ||
- - Once you've completed the three shrines and found all the Dragon
- equipment, you can pick up Agni in the hidden area at the bottom of the
- cave.
- - This transformation multiplies Ryuu's HP and allows him to deal 999 pod
- to all enemies every round, although other characters are removed during
- the transformation. It can only be used if all other characters are alive
- and available (ie. not fused).
- \\\ Scande Region ||
- Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
- WarHogX | 280 | 100% | 1360 | 480 |
- FireHead | 240 | 50% | 1400 |1000 |
- - This is the best place to level up, not that there's any particular
- need to do so. Either way, using encounter rate increasing equipment
- doesn't make much of a difference, since the encounter rate is already
- pretty high. If you do use it, don't forget that the character has to
- be the lead character.

- Item (nc): D.Hrt (Unique) \\\ Tunlan ||
- - Talk to the NPC in the first regular apartment to obtain the D.Hrt.
- \\\ Prima / Tunlan ||
- - As I already mentioned, the flea market has now reached the final phase.
- - Tuna fully heals the HP of a single character along with curing any
- status ailments (can't be stacked).
- - The MaskSH (65/8) is the strongest shield for most characters (everyone
- except Ryu and whoever is using the Star Shield). It's non-elemental and
- also has the reflect ability, just like the AngleAR, but unfortunately
- this one has a limited activation rate. Even so, it's still one of the
- best shields in the game. It's also pretty easy to get (about as common
- as the G.Tiara).
- - The EvilRB is for Nina and Bleu (90/1). Easily their best choice, since
- it halves damage from the common elements (Fire, Ice, Thunder).
- - The DwarfBW (150/1) is Bo's second strongest weapon. One-handed.
- - The PowerRP (82/0) is Nina's ultimate weapon, but don't forget about
- the Loyal Rapier.
- - The GlowCN (100/8) is Bleu's ultimate weapon.
- - The Mallet (255/1) is Ox's ultimate weapon.

- - Next, you'll find a recovery point and soon thereafter a hole on the

- - The last section of the dungeon is similar to Mote's Tower, with switches
- on the ground that turn the floor either visible or invisible. You don't

- Enemies: HP Def Exp Z
- BlazeX | 2400 | 125% | 840 | 200 |
- Gargoyle | 2200 | 100% | 1200 | 400 |
- Ruga | 3500 | 294% | 2520 |1200 |
- Golem | 3000 | 143% | 1290 | 540 |
- - Again, the BlazeX's can cast BoltX (400 pod).
- - There are no save points in the final dungeon, I'm afraid. Then again,
- it's not that long or difficult. Although, there is that big room after
- Goda that's cloned three times for a total of 4 "instances." They're
- basically identical. They all lead to the same place, and there doesn't
- seem to be any items, so don't bother going through each of them.
- [Boss: Goda]
- - 5504 + 5496 HP, 45% Def, W:C, 6000 xp, 6000 Z
- - Goda doesn't use any magic at all.
- - When you finally reach Judas, he'll ask if you'd be interested in
- joining him. If you accept his offer, you can serve as his goon for a
- while, which means you'll be fighting a bunch of fixed encounters for
- his entertainment.
- [Boss: Jade]
- - 21 876 + 3124 HP, 42% Def, W:D, 8000 xp, 8000 Z
- - His two most dangerous attacks are BoltX (400 pod, always used on
- the first character) and Rub. He doesn't use either one often, though.
- - I wouldn't bother with Nina's magic resisting spells (Shield, Dispel,
- Wall), since they wear off after just one spell.
- - Once the battle is over, check behind the right pillar to find the
- StarHR, and the area left of Jude's throne for the Emperor's Sword,
- Ryu's ultimate weapon (255/1)(although the DarkDR can still deal a
- little more damage thanks to the elemental variable)..
- - You can use the StarHR in battle to deal 400 pod to all enemies.
- - You can use the EmporSD in battle to deal 180 pod to all enemies.
- - At this point, it is a *very* good idea to leave and save your game.
- Only the final boss remains (unless you still have Dragon Shrines left
- that you haven't done).
- - And, yeah, if you want levels, fighting Fireheads and WarHogX's in
- the Scande region is probably your best option. The encounter rate is
- pretty high by default, so using the Gown or SageML won't make a big
- difference. Either way, you can get about 50k in 30 minutes. After Lv50,
- each level requires 50-70k xp.
- - When you first talk to the Goddess, you can get your party fully healed.
- [Boss: Miria]
- - B: 28 000 HP, 40% Def, W:D
- - C: 31 000 HP, 19,6% Def, W:D
- - In order to see the good ending, you'll have to use Agni, so that you
- can fight her true form (C). Don't forget that Agni can only be used
- when all characters are alive, and Karn isn't fused.
- - B: She only uses normal attacks and Chill (100 pod to all).
- - C: She only uses normal attacks and Comet c (70 pod to all). Her ATP
- is 510, so her physical attacks are a concern to characters with lower
- HP and DFP. Eg. with 300 DFP, you take 170 pod.
- - Agni will indeed trivialize the battle, so I suggest you try to beat
- her without it. If you do use it, you should have Ryu equip the BrokenSD,
- as it triggers a special guest appearance during the ending.
- End of file.
