  2. I recall how her hand would shake when she spoke of going out at night. I wanted to reassure her.

  7. 'She said: "'Wolves do prowl the steppes in great numbers. We hear them howling at night. We see the loss of sheep and goats, when the shepherds' protection fails. They say there are giant cats, too, like we might call 'onces', that come down from the mountains on rare occasions. Their fur is snowy white, spotted with black, and that their beauty is the most terrible thing about them...'

  9. I did not dismiss the Interpreter's fears. In fact, they seemed well grounded. What was less clear, though, was why she needed to be outside the city walls at night. However, since my own interests would be served by it, I offered to accompany her if she needed to go wandering. She was clearly irritated by my concern, and claimed she would try to conquer her fears by herself.
