  1. Pauper Battle Box DMU Update
  2.
  3. Initiative is legal on MTGO now and a lot of brews have been flying around. Damage based removal has become a little weaker since Aaracokra Sneak and Battlerager survive most of it, with the latter even surviving Galvanic Blast. DMU also provided a few new toys to the format in Tolarian Terror and Smash to Dust.
  4.
  5. Sideboard wise, Arms of Hadar has become the preferred sweeper since it dodges Hydroblast. Graveyard based strategies may have an opportunity to excel since many decks are tuning their decks to deal with Initiative threats.
  6.
  7. --New Decks--
  8.
  9. Serpentine Curve -- https://www.moxfield.com/decks/cz_dR1dIM0G4VV1h3j3KIA
  10. The main goal of the deck is to spam instants and sorceries for a big Serpentine Curve to either attack for lethal or fling at the opponent. DMU gave the deck Tolarian Terror, which provides another threat instead of being all in on the namesake card.
  11.
  12.
  13. --Deck Updates--
  14.
  15. Affinity
  16. +2 Metallic Rebuke
  17. +1 Chainer's Edict
  18. +1 Smash to Dust
  19. -1 Gurmag Angler
  20. -1 Kenku Artificer
  21. -1 Krark-Clan Shaman
  22. -1 Myr Retriever
  23. ---SB---
  24. +2 Arms of Hadar
  25. +2 Hydroblast
  26. +2 Metallic Rebuke
  27. +2 Unexpected Fangs
  28. +1 Pyroblast
  29. -2 Breath Weapon
  30. -2 Duress
  31. -2 Spell Pierce
  32. -1 Gorilla Shaman
  33. -1 Nihil Spellbomb
  34. -1 Shenanigans
  35.
  36. Affinity is still well positioned being the premiere value town deck even without Initiative. Kenku has proved effective but the jury is still out on how many.
  37.
  38.
  39. Blink
  40. +2 Journey to Nowhere
  41. +2 Sea Gate Oracle
  42. +1 Kenku Artificer
  43. -1 Aaracokra Sneak
  44. -1 Fire // Ice
  45. -1 Militia Bugler
  46. -1 Mulldrifter
  47. -1 Dawnbringer Cleric
  48. ---SB---
  49. +1 Dawnbringer Cleric
  50. +1 Circle of Protection: Red
  51. +1 Gorilla Shaman
  52. -3 Dust to Dust
  53.
  54. Blink shaved on a few things to make room for Journey to Nowhere. The problem with Sneak and Battlerager is they survive most damage based removal. I don't like cutting Mulldrifters at all, but the format is still in flux.
  55.
  56.
  57. Bogles
  58. +1 Ram Through
  59. -1 Commune with Spirits
  60. ---SB---
  61. +2 Fog
  62. +2 Scattershot Archer
  63. +2 Standard Bearer
  64. +1 Lifelink
  65. +1 Ram Through
  66. -3 Dust to Dust
  67. -2 Tormod's Crypt
  68. -2 Young Wolf
  69. -1 Gut Shot
  70.
  71. Initiative and DMU didn't give Bogles any new toys, but most of the changes in the deck are sideboard responses to the Kiln Fiend deck since they can present a clock faster. Bogles doesn't really care about the Initiative and hopes to end the game before that is relevant.
  72.
  73.
  74. Boros Gates (previously named Boros Bully)
  75. +4 Flame Slash
  76. +4 Basilisk Gate
  77. +4 Citadel Gate
  78. +4 Cliffgate
  79. +1 Guardian of the Guildpact
  80. +1 Heap Gate
  81. -4 Ash Barrens
  82. -4 Plains
  83. -3 Springleaf Drum
  84. -3 Thrilling Discovery
  85. -2 Boros Garrison
  86. -1 Lorehold Campus
  87. -1 Rally the Peasants
  88. ---SB---
  89. +2 Tormod's Crypt
  90. +1 Lone Missionary
  91. +1 Remove Enchantments
  92. -2 Parapet
  93. -1 Red Elemental Blast
  94. -1 Dust to Dust
  95.
  96. The existing Boros Bully shell turned out to be a good home for Gates, allowing it to attack on another axis when the go wide plan fails. Flame Slash was also added for stronger removal against some of the 4 toughness threats out there like Stonehorn Dignitary and Aaracokra Sneak.
  97.
  98.
  99. Boros Metalcraft
  100. +2 Makeshift Munitions
  101. +1 Seeker of the Way
  102. -3 Foundry Helix
  103. ---SB---
  104. +2 Abrade
  105. +2 Journey to Nowhere
  106. +2 Lone Missionary
  107. +2 Patrician's Scorn
  108. +1 Circle of Protection: Red
  109. -3 Dawnbringer Cleric
  110. -3 Dust to Dust
  111. -2 Revoke Existence
  112. -1 Tormod's Crypt
  113.
  114. Most of the changes in this deck are in response to Kiln Fiend's existence. Some versions of the deck run gates but I want to keep the Metalcraft theme to differentiate it from the other Boros deck.
  115.
  116.
  117. Devotion
  118. Decklist changes TBD
  119.
  120. Mono Black Control has gone under an identity crisis as of late. Some versions have completely ditched Gary in exchange for the consistency of Vampire Sovereign and also being a flying threat. Other versions are going more on the control plan and winning with the Initiative + Monarch combo of Vicious Battlerager and Thorn of the Black Rose. Traditional Devotion lists are also still putting up results, though in less frequency because of the variants. I think all of them have their merits, but I haven't decided what I want to do with the deck yet. Regardless, Vicious Battlerager as a 4 of is consistent in all versions of the deck.
  121.
  122.
  123. Goblin Combo
  124. +2 Faithless Looting
  125. +1 Duress
  126. -2 Kuldotha Rebirth
  127. -1 Dark-Dweller Oracle
  128. ---SB---
  129. +1 Weather the Storm
  130. +3 Abrade
  131. -4 Lightning Bolt
  132.
  133. Goblins got no new toys lately so these are just minor adjustments.
  134.
  135.
  136. Faeries
  137. +4 Dark Ritual
  138. +3 Aaracokra Sneak
  139. +3 Moon-Circuit Hacker
  140. +1 Agony Warp
  141. +1 Chainers Edict
  142. +1 Vicious Battlerager
  143. -4 Augur of Bolas
  144. -3 Ninja of the Deep Hours
  145. -1 Debt to the Kami
  146. -1 Dispel
  147. -1 Gurmag Angler
  148. -1 Ice Tunnel
  149. -1 Island
  150. -1 Thorn of the Black Rose
  151. ---SB---
  152. +2 Arms of Hadar
  153. +2 Dispel
  154. +1 Debt to the Kami
  155. -2 Annul
  156. -2 Tormod's Crypt
  157. -1 Chainer's Edict
  158.
  159. Dimir decks have exploded in popularity with Initiative seeing as the two best cards are in these colors. Some decks have even opted to not play Fae anymore. I'm not quite ready to throw out the Fae just yet and even then I'd to keep a Fae deck of some description around.
  160.
  161.
  162. Hot Dogs
  163. +3 Lightning Bolt
  164. +1 Crash Through
  165. +1 Forgotten Cave
  166. -3 Faithless Looting
  167. -1 Apostle's Blessing
  168. -1 Temur Battle Rage
  169. ---SB---
  170. +4 Flame Slash
  171. +1 Apostle's Blessing
  172. +1 Electrickery
  173. +1 Underworld Rage-Hound
  174. -4 Pyroblast
  175. -3 Lightning Bolt
  176.
  177. Hot Dogs has become a Tier 1 deck with the printing of Monastery Swiftspear. Flame Slash added to sideboard to deal with Stonehorn Dignitary locks.
  178.
  179.
  180. Mad Burn
  181. +1 Chain Lightning
  182. -1 Searing Blaze
  183. ---SB---
  184. +2 Diabolic Edict
  185. +2 Gorilla Shaman
  186. +2 Psychotic Haze
  187. -2 First-Sphere Gargantuan
  188. -2 Molten Rain
  189. -1 Chainer's Edict
  190. -1 Smash to Smitherines
  191.
  192. Not much to say here. Mad Burn is still well positioned despite no new toys. The deck can go fast or grind with the rest of them.
  193.
  194.
  195. Ponza
  196. +2 Skred
  197. +2 Snow-Covered Forest
  198. +1 Ash Barrens
  199. +1 Avenging Hunter
  200. +1 Maelstrom Colossus
  201. +1 Stirring Bard
  202. -4 Lightning Bolt
  203. -2 Racer's Ring
  204. -1 Highland Forest
  205. -1 Snow-Covered Mountain
  206. ---SB---
  207. +3 Tangle
  208. +2 Fangren Marauder
  209. +1 Pulse of Murasa
  210. -3 Calming Verse
  211. -2 Weather the Storm
  212. -1 Tormod's Crypt
  213.
  214. Minor changes to Ponza, most notably Tangle in the sideboard to buy time against all in decks like Bogles and Kiln Fiend.
  215.
  216.
  217. Slivers
  218. ---SB---
  219. +3 Prismatic Strands
  220. +2 Crimson Acolyte
  221. +2 Gorilla Shaman
  222. +2 Scattershot Archer
  223. +2 Standard Bearer
  224. -2 Dust to Dust
  225. -2 Faerie Macabre
  226. -2 Hallow
  227. -2 Journey to Nowhere
  228. -2 Lone Missionary
  229. -1 Bladeback Sliver
  230.
  231. Things aren't looking too hot in the meta for Slivers. Sideboard changes help some matchups after game 1, but it's still rough.
  232.
  233.
  234. Tribe Combo
  235. +4 Squadron Hawk
  236. +2 Impulse
  237. +2 Spell Pierce
  238. +1 Dispel
  239. +1 Muddle the Mixture
  240. -4 Augur of Bolas
  241. -3 Peek
  242. -1 Blacksmith's Skill
  243. -1 Wedding Invitation
  244. -1 Whiteout
  245. ---SB---
  246. +3 Prismatic Strands
  247. +3 Gut Shot
  248. +1 Crimson Acolyte
  249. +1 Flaring Pain
  250. +1 Piracy Charm
  251. +1 Snow-Covered Mountain
  252. -3 Gigadrowse
  253. -2 Dispel
  254. -2 Standard Bearer
  255. -1 Echoing Truth
  256. -1 Holy Light
  257. -1 Student of Ojutai
  258.
  259. Trying out a new list that made it on the 5-0s recently. It's a slightly different take that uses Squadron Hawks to fill its hand to discard to Tireless Tribe. Shoutouts to the one Mountain the sideboard for Flaring Pain lmao.
