Death Stranding plot speculation

So there was a new Death Stranding trailer today. What makes this different from the other trailers is that a load of information was uncovered that offers some clarity on the plot, as opposed to the bafflingly cryptic trailers we got before. The following is my hypothesis on the plot from what has been shown so far, including what was shown in the trailer:

There's some sort of apocalypse scenario (which we don't know what it is exactly) that destroyed the United States. In the process of that happening, various communities and areas around the country became isolated and seem to rival each other or be wary of each other, in a similar situation to the Fallout universe. Sam (main character)'s goal is to reunite this fragmented society, with a terrorist group and some alien entities trying to stop him.
