- Dragon Quest VI
- Monster Only Challenge Playthrough
- Premise:
- - Get access to Dharma Temple after defeating Mudo (where I'm starting this playthrough)
- - Change Hero into a Beastmaster, immediately recruit a Slime (1/2 recruit chance)
- - Only use recruited monster allies after getting the Slime. Drango is also banned.
- - Hero can use Return spell freely
- - Otherwise, anything goes, beat the game
- - Possibly do some side area stuff like Slime Arena and the post-game dungeon
- Monsters in this game:
- - There are 18 monsters that are all completely unique with sprites, stat lines & learnsets, and have varying equipment choices
- - They have varying recruit chances, from 1/2 up to 1/256
- - They unique resistance tables, where human characters do not
- - Only Slime units can participate in the Slime Arena, so recruiting at least one strong Slime family units is important
- Hero and Barbara are forced into the party at all times, but can be in the wagon most of the time. That leaves 6 party slots. The way it plays out is that Slalin the Slime joins at Lv1 and has an initially steep EXP curve, but Slalin can equip decent gear. Making Slalin a Beastmaster will allow Slalin to recruit other monsters, but it requires some progressive investment to get stronger monsters. Post Mudo 3 gives the player Fire Claw and Staff of Thunder. Over the course of the game, I'll have to decide whether or not upgrading monster units is worth it over building job classes. Monster units in the mid to late game are very powerful, but may take awhile to get up to speed.
- I'm working on a Project and need some footage of the game, and this challenge is a good motivator. It's been a very long time since I've played using monsters and it should be fun.
