  1. History Essay
  2.
  3. Thesis: The enigma machine was one of the key reasons the Allies were able to win the war. Alan Turing impacted how computing would be looked at as a threat and advantage in the future for conflict by cracking the code with the countless years of time and effort to allow changes for the future.
  4.
  5.
  6.
  7. BP 1:
  8.
  9. - The Allied forces were at a disadvantage until they discovered they could use this invention to break through and discover plans
  10.
  11. - German’s were convinced this code could not be broken so they kept going on with their hidden messages even though many suspicious things were occurring against the allies.
  12.
  13. - Originally coded by a German man in 1923, then changed by the Germans to make it harder to decipher, quickly picked up by the British
  14.
  15. - Very few commanders new of these plans being infiltrated by the British, another reason the allies were able to decode for so long
  16.
  17.
  18.
  19.
  20. BP 2:
  21.
  22. - Before this war no one thought such technology could cost a war for either side, the Enigma machine proved this could be such a possibility
  23.
  24. - Alan Turing was the man who eventually cracked the Enigma code with help from Poland over the course of a few years.
  25.
  26. - By late 1940 he had broken the code and was able to track many plans made by Germans
  27.
  28. - Around the end of 1941 as US joined the war, they attempted to launch a U boat with the machine as they gained an advantage at sea but due to complications this was quickly rendered useless.
  29.
  30. - Although many issues were occurring with the newfound invention flopping Turing was not going to give up.
  31.
  32.
  33. BP 3:
  34.
  35.
  36. This turn of events was extremely controversial as an unexpected threat popped up, this concerned both the allies and the germans.
  37. This added a new race to the best as whoever could get technological advances quicker were projected to become victorious
  38. This caused an outbreak back in the home towns of those at war as everyone who had any engineering background quickly jumped in the position to help.
  39.
  40.
  41. BP 4:
  42.
  43. Following this was a war of guerilla tactics between technology and manpower, every decision was made as if the army was made of 10 men and people were super careful.
  44. Economy grew vastly for countries with lots of metals as there was constant demand for it as they needed it for machinery to excel past the foe.
  45. Not a lot of action was taken in this period as both sides were scared of the technology that could be infiltrating them.
  46. BP 5:
  47.
  48. The biggest accomplishment of Alan Turing and his Enigma Machine cracker was definitely forcing Hitler to postpone the attack on Britain.
  49. The intel on Germany forced Hitler to hold off on the attack which gave Britain time to prepare for the attack and not be forced into a surrender then and there.
  50. The whole idea of technology forced a lot of strategic plays by both parties and made for a very tough yet thought out war.
  51.
  52. Conclusion:
  53.
  54. Although it had ups and downs for both parties, the enigma machine, and the cracker made by Alan Turing had huge impacts on the pace of the war, the outcome of the war, and how the world is today.
