- Well yeah, but these people would have to be:
- [list]
- [*] Extremely gullible and/or hopeful, which is a death sentence on Athas.
- [*] Taken to flights of fancy, which is a death sentence on Athas.
- [*] Capable of assuming that Athas can be, in some small way, not awful. Which is a death sentence on Athas.
- [*] Willing to venture into lands infested by psychic wildlife that explode your mind. Which is a death sentence on Athas. I'm not talking "there's a few psionic creatures." I'm talking "There is little wildlife on Athas without some kind of psychic ability and a burning desire to murder and eat anything coming into its territory." Again, death sentence.
- [*] Willing to risk life, limb, and everything you own to chase the shadow of a rumor which nobody's actually seen or been able to verify the existence of, instead of going for material gains that have been proven- IE tomb raiding, living in the city, and/or banditry. Which is a death sentence on Athas.
- [*] They'd need to actually believe that such a place existed in a first place, that such a place could exist without being secured by one of the Dragon Kings or turned into a settlement, hadn't been defiled to ash, wasn't some kind of illusion, that plants could survive without light, that there existed animals that wouldn't rampage and drive anything in the oasis to extinction and eat through all the plant life, and that such a place wasn't the hibernation chamber of some kind of world-smashing superbeast. This isn't so much a death sentence as it is standing at the peak of the highest mountain, screaming "The Dragon of Tyr sucks eggs, come and get me you stupid lizard!" then dousing yourself in barbecue sauce and swan diving into a halfling camp's comically large clay soup pot.
- [*] It bears repeating: it would have to escape the notice of the Dragon-Kings for millenia. It would ALSO have to be outside their "pretty much everywhere" defiling radius, so it'd be dead unless it was obscenely far from civilization in which case the entire campaign could very well be "go across the most awful desert in existence to find a macguffin." I think it miiight be a tad more believable if we were looking for some kind of druid sanctuary.
