  2. [13:28] Wildbow 84% counted
  3. [13:44] Wildbow 49.9 to 49.5, 88% counted. Word is that the first-tme caucusers took some time to get through the process, delaying things.

  8. [13:49] Wildbow Sanders has 20 delegates to Clinton's 19, which may technically be a win, depending on how one counts it.
  9. [13:51] Wildbow The gap has been swiftly closing this past hour
  10. [13:51] Wildbow SO hard to focus on writing.

  30. [14:02] Bruticus Is it rounded up?
  31. [14:02] Wildbow 90% reported for Sanders/Clinton
  32. [14:02] Tal Bruticus: Still 10% left to report for dems. Dunno if that's cause they still need to count or if they are just dilly dallying.
  33. [14:02] daensh there's still some left for the GOP one
  34. [14:02] tubes no
  35. [14:02] tubes GOP has been called

  45. [14:03] tubes trump and rubio like %1 apart
  46. [14:04] daensh rubio alarmingly close to donald
  47. [14:04] Wildbow 27.7 Cruz, 24.4 Trump, 23 Rubio
  48. [14:04] daensh rand ahead of bush
  49. [14:04] daensh lmao
  50. [14:04] tubes meanwhile jeb bush is harassing people in line at dunkin donuts for votes
  51. [14:04] Tal Probably good for republicans. Rubio seems like he'd have the best chances in the general.

  57. [14:06] daensh now endure a week of "have we hit PEAK TRUMP ?" in the NYT until NH
  58. [14:07] tubes yeah the trash talk is going to be significant
  59. [14:07] daensh im happy for sanders too, hope he does well
  60. [14:07] Bruticus https://twitter.com/BostonGlobe/status/694371084410470400/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

  62. [14:07] Bruticus Poor Martin
  63. [14:07] Bruticus lol
  64. [14:07] Tal I hope so, daensh
  65. [14:07] tubes coming in second wouldn't be that bad for anyone else but trump has been selling himself a lot on winning
  66. [14:07] Empy Didn't he drop out?
  67. [14:07] tubes just the fact that he's neck and neck isn't good
  68. [14:07] tubes yeah he failed to get a single delegate
  69. [14:07] tubes he's doneskis
  70. [14:08] daensh i was okay with him coming second to cruz, that was sort of expected. it's rubio breathing down his neck that worries me
  71. [14:08] Bruticus I'm out of the loop
  72. [14:08] tubes i expected him to place third, but not that closely
  73. [14:08] daensh iowa isnt that important in the grand scheme of things, they picked santorum and huckabee in previous elections
  74. [14:08] Bruticus What's Rubio said?
  75. [14:08] daensh but the rubio part is frightening
  76. [14:08] Bruticus Is he nuts?
  77. [14:08] tubes yeah the iowa republican primary is notoriously unreliable
  78. [14:08] tubes Bruticus: iowa caucus m8
  79. [14:08] daensh rubio is the establishment guy
  80. [14:09] daensh hes an inoffensive dweeb
  81. [14:09] tubes evangelical white people who live in in a flyover state are, shockingly, not really in tune with the rest of the party
  82. [14:09] Tal Iowa is just important for how it affects the media spin and perception following
  83. [14:09] Tal Pretty much it
  84. [14:09] Bruticus Ah, the Harys Swyft
  85. [14:09] daensh iowa isnt actually majority evangelical
  86. [14:09] daensh biggest religion is catholic
  87. [14:09] tubes it's republican voters are though
  88. [14:09] daensh tru
  89. [14:10] tubes anyway, trump needs to turn his trash talk guns onto rubio
  90. [14:10] daensh wonder if trump will start to rail against ethanol subsidies in revenge
  91. [14:10] tubes jeb bush is already did, he's just hunting him for sport at this point
  92. [14:10] Wildbow Hillary just jumped to a .8% lead.
  93. [14:10] Wildbow 91% counted
  94. [14:11] daensh also its pretty lol how jeb has spent $25,000 for every voter so far
  95. [14:11] Wildbow Painful
  96. [14:11] daensh like, his total spending divided by the votes he got
  97. [14:11] daensh shouldve sent out more guac bowls
  98. [14:12] tubes alright enough yeb trash talk for now
  99. [14:12] tubes it's reminded me that i have to do my spanish hw
  100. [14:12] daensh lol
  101. [14:13] daensh https://twitter.com/TheLeadCNN/status/694369012826947584 trump concession speech
  102. [14:13] Tal Bow, a lot of rural counties reported apparently when that happened. Still urban counties out.
  103. [14:13] Wildbow nods
  104. [14:14] Wildbow The recent swing is apparently because so many first-time caucusers turned up and bogged down the process in certain areas
  105. [14:14] Wildbow So they're later to report?
  106. [14:14] Tal Yeah
  107. [14:14] Wildbow I'm used to the rural communities finishing early
  108. [14:14] Wildbow Made canadian election spooky at first.
  109. [14:14] Wildbow Then all of the conservative areas flipped, was like magic
  110. [14:14] Bruticus Thanks Sask
  111. [14:15] daensh "I think I might come here and buy a farm" lol
  112. [14:16] Bruticus I'm hoping for a comeback
  113. [14:16] daensh DNC might ron paul themselves over this
  114. [14:17] daensh sanders voters giving up in disgust, handing the election to GOP
  115. [14:17] tubes that would be really dumb
  116. [14:17] tubes considering it's extremely close
  117. [14:17] daensh if the GOP had dealt with paul civilly in 08 and 12 instead of fucking him, romney might have won
  118. [14:18] tubes iowa dem is a much better forecast than republican one, but it's literally a matter of inches
  119. [14:18] tubes throwing in the towel would be dumb as hell
  120. [14:18] daensh since sanders is what dems actually want, hillary is the "safe" candidate
  121. [14:18] tubes sanders is what dems who use the internet want
  122. [14:18] daensh didnt mean over iowa, i mean the DNC's conduct in general
  123. [14:19] tubes i haven't been following as closely but i don't think that's necessairly true
  124. [14:19] tubes you see a lot of bernie stuff on the internet because it's a younger demographic who likes his ideas
  125. [14:19] tubes but those people don't tend to turn up for voting
  126. [14:19] Wildbow Lower reported voting in Iowa tonight than there was in 2008
  127. [14:19] tubes across the board?
  128. [14:20] Wildbow Dem side, at least, not sure about republican
  129. [14:20] Tal Higher for repubs I'd expect.
  130. [14:20] daensh republican is a massive turnout
  131. [14:20] daensh which is odd, because you'd think higher turnout would benefit trump, but instead it's for cruz
  132. [14:21] Wildbow Contentious candidate. Scary enough to his detractors that he pushes them to vote
  133. [14:21] Wildbow Just like he pushes his supporters to
  134. [14:22] tubes not to mention the republican debates and all their various speeches have practically been a circus sideshow
  135. [14:22] daensh rubio's gain is from bush/kasich/carson/whoever voters who know their guy can't win, so they go for rubio
  136. [14:22] tubes yeah probably
  137. [14:23] daensh but the 1st time voters are probably mostly for cruz or trump
  138. [14:23] tubes well i think trump got a lot in polls from people who said they would vote for trump (if they were voting)
  139. [14:23] daensh a guy like rubio isnt making first time voters super enthused
  140. [14:23] tubes he gets name brand recognition from them, so they like him, but they were never going to vote in the first place so it doesn't actually turn out helping
  141. [14:24] daensh i think its more that iowa is an odd state
  142. [14:24] daensh scandinavian evangelicals with ethanol subsidies
  143. [14:24] daensh build the wall, and make iowa pay for it
  144. [14:25] daensh NH is next, what's after that
  145. [14:25] daensh nevada?
  146. [14:26] tubes sc i believe
  147. [14:26] Empy Oh, Nevada has em? I'll be taking part in that.
  148. [14:26] tubes texas isn't until march
  149. [14:26] tubes but it's the first big state so i think it's still gonna count, esp in this election
  150. [14:27] daensh cruz will take texas easily
  151. [14:29] Bruticus Apparently Clinton's already making her victory speech
  152. [14:29] Wildbow http://www.c-span.org/video/?c4578575/clinton-voter-fraud-polk-county-iowa-caucus
  153. [14:29] tubes LOL
  154. [14:29] tubes no way
  155. [14:29] Tal She apparently declared victory like half an hour ago
  156. [14:30] Bruticus Please Karma, smite her
  157. [14:32] Somecrazyguy Microsoft doing poll shit made me nervous
  158. [14:33] Somecrazyguy But iowa never matters for repubs anyway
  159. [14:33] daensh ye ms gave money to rubio i think
  160. [14:34] Somecrazyguy Oh look who surged to 3rd place
  161. [14:34] Somecrazyguy Wow pure coincidence
  162. [14:34] tubes it's not really that suprising
  163. [14:36] Nepene Mitchell county is hitting Sanders hard.
  164. [14:36] Wildbow Clinton makes victory speech, Sanders surges to .2 point lead.
  165. [14:36] Nepene Only 70%, a lot of votes, and leaning Hilary
  166. [14:37] Wildbow Would be so hilarious if he beat her after this. So hilairous
  167. [14:37] Tal Haha
  168. [14:37] tubes daensh: he may be the hometown boy
  169. [14:38] tubes but i cannot be swayed
  170. [14:38] Somecrazyguy Inb4 another mission accomplished moment
  171. [14:38] daensh lol some trump ppl i know are calling for a boycott of corn
  172. [14:38] Somecrazyguy Iowa pls
  173. [14:39] daensh "i will only eat high-fructose beet-syrup from now on"
  174. [14:39] tubes that's going to be rather hard considering literally everything you eat in america is corn
  175. [14:39] tubes and most of the things you don't
  176. [14:39] daensh doesnt coke taste different
  177. [14:40] Somecrazyguy I love that they voted for the guy that wants to get rid of their subsidies
  178. [14:40] Empy Coke tastes like bad choices.
  179. [14:40] Nepene 3 votes apart
  180. [14:40] tubes hillary and sanders?
  181. [14:41] Nepene yep
  182. [14:41] daensh yeah an anti ethanol guy winning iowa is a miracle enough to qualify for sainthood
  183. [14:44] Chime https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/417760911177162752
  184. [14:45] Somecrazyguy Lol chime
  185. [14:45] daensh reagan came second in iowa
  186. [14:46] Somecrazyguy Iowa hasnt picked the repub candidate in 16 years
  187. [14:46] Somecrazyguy About to be 20
  188. [14:47] tubes i'm wondering who the vice president will be
  189. [14:47] tubes i could see trump taking cruz but i can't see cruz taking trump
  190. [14:47] daensh trump would refuse VP
  191. [14:48] tubes that's what i would think
  192. [14:48] Somecrazyguy Trump would not take cruz
  193. [14:48] Somecrazyguy Ineligible due to birth
  194. [14:48] tubes lel
  195. [14:48] daensh cruz would take VP if offered, he's pretty young and can use it as a springboard for 2020 or 2024
  196. [14:48] Nepene Trump is supposed to have fairly good relationships with Cruz
  197. [14:49] Nepene Plus, he's an obvious backup president
  198. [14:49] Somecrazyguy Cruz would take chairman of the lap if it was offered
  199. [14:49] daensh backup for whom? the establishment hate cruz almost as much as they hate trump
  200. [14:49] Bruticus http://i.imgur.com/VxzVsqA.png
  201. [14:49] Bruticus Dem update
  202. [14:49] Somecrazyguy Also trump needs to take mattis so nobody dares assassinate
  203. [14:50] tubes he's deflon don
  204. [14:50] tubes teflon
  205. [14:50] tubes the bullets would slide off anyway
  206. [14:50] Nepene Trump said he'd pick his VP based on who'd be the best president if something happened
  207. [14:50] Nepene Cruz, given his popularity, is an obvious candidate
  208. [14:50] Somecrazyguy Mattis would be good
  209. [14:50] tubes that sounds like an "i'm gonna pick an outsider" to me
  210. [14:51] tubes since, "something happened" usually involves explosions
  211. [14:51] tubes except for the one time bush had surgery
  212. [14:52] daensh i really wanna see him pick "mad dog" mattis for VP
  213. [14:52] daensh instant veteran vote, if he doesnt have it already

  239. [17:07] Elara What's the result looking like from Iowa? Trump win, Clinton close win?
  240. [17:07] Wildbow Trump in 2nd place, down 3.3% below Cruz
  241. [17:08] Mishie nope
  242. [17:08] Wildbow Bernie and Hillary close enough to be a tie, Hillary won two coin flips for delegates
  243. [17:08] Mishie clinton won though, pretty close
  244. [17:08] Tal Five now actually, bow.
  245. [17:08] Wildbow frowns.
  246. [17:08] Mishie how many to bernie Tal?
  247. [17:08] Elara Clinton biases coins! Corruption, inside job!
  248. [17:08] Wildbow shakes his fist
  249. [17:08] Tal And apparently 90 precincts were improperly staffed and had 'missing' results
  250. [17:08] Elara
  251. [17:09] Hierophant I don't really like any of the candidates, so I'm naively going to hope that Hillary wins and seatwarms until a better candidate comes along.
  252. [17:09] Tal Yes, the moneyed interests clearly influencing the results there
  253. [17:09] Tal Darned coin flips
  254. [17:09] Tal Mishie: None that I know of.
  255. [17:09] Thalia 4 years is a long time to seatwarm
  256. [17:09] Mishie haaa
  257. [17:09] Hierophant /pol/ is now claiming that "shillary" is rigging the election
  258. [17:09] Mishie so she won 5/5?
  259. [17:09] Wildbow What are you looking for in a candidate, Heropants?
  260. [17:09] Elara Interesting that Cruz came in first, though I guess Iowa is pretty evangelical heavy
  261. [17:09] Tal Yup
  262. [17:09] Mishie hahahaha
  263. [17:10] Elara Like, Cruz-style evangelical, not Pentecostal or anything
  264. [17:10] Hierophant WB: Good question. I'm not too sure - am skeptical about holding strong political views at a young age, because that almost never goes well - but I know that of the current viable candidates, I'm ruling out the republicans(too misaliagned with my views) and of the democrats I don't think Bernie has it in him to handle America's economics situation.
  265. [17:10] Mishie So bernie lost in the state where he really needed a win.
  266. [17:10] Hierophant At the very least, Hillary knows her way around DC.
  267. [17:11] Tal Mishie, it will probably go down as a tie
  268. [17:11] Mishie true, but either way it's not good for him
  269. [17:11] Tal Eh, we'll see.
  270. [17:12] Hierophant Can't believe Hillary won all 5 flips
  271. [17:12] Hierophant that's a 1/32 chance, unless I miscalculate
  272. [17:12] Tal A loss of several percent would have been bad. A tie may be good enough to show people 'he can win' or whatever they need to see.
  273. [17:12] Mishie except he kinda lost in a state that had the kind of dems that should have gone for him
  274. [17:13] Wildbow Situation is with the delegates/superdelegates and the convention this summer. Hillary already has so many lined up. Her getting five of the coin flips is hard to recover from.
  275. [17:14] Wildbow I'm a big Bernie supporter - I think he's genuine and decent in a way other candidates aren't. But it looks like a very uphill battle - more than it was before tonight.
