'The secret of silk escaped hundreds of years ago, but there are many more. Is it right to take them? Can I defy the Pope, even if I disagree?'

As so often, the Interpreter was willing to help. She said curiosity for learning was no cause for shame. She took me to a seamstress who let me sketch her embroidery for a small price, and even gave me samples of the work to take home. Roman craftsmen could perhaps learn from it.

'Do not look so perturbed,' said the Interpreter. 'It is not as if I have given you the recipe for gunpowder.'
