TIFU by making a sexual innuendo in front of 4th graders

This actually happened a while ago, it’s just one of those nights where all of my mistakes and mortifications are haunting me. Anyway, I taught 4th grade English in a very conservative Christian school last school year.

It was Friday, I was exhausted, and also very dehydrated because I had four classes right next to each other and I didn’t have enough time to get more water. This was the fourth class, my brain was barely functioning.

I go in front of the class, do my usual classroom routine, then we start our lesson. The topic for that day was adjectives, they were all very familiar with it but I still wanted to review it with them.

I asked them to give me examples of adjectives and I write their answers on the board. It all goes accordingly, until one boy raises his hand. I call out his name, in a very serious tone he says, ‘Thick!’

With my brain not fully functioning, my body goes into autopilot and I reach out towards the board and in very clear writing I write ‘thicc’.

The whole class freezes, I ask them if anybody else wants to give an example. One boy points towards the board. ‘I don’t think that’s how you spell that teacher!’

I hear a whispered ‘Oh my gosh!’ from one of the girls. I look at the board and I feel myself go cold. Half of the class starts to laugh while the other half, the apparently more innocent half, look on in confusion and ask their peers what the big deal was.

I immediately erase the word and rewrote it the correct way. I apologized to the class and went on with the lesson. Before I left to finally get some lunch, a couple of the students asked me if I actually knew what that word meant and I did my best impression of a tomato and ran out of there.

TL;DR - Out of pure absent-mindedness, while teaching English at a VERY conservative Christian school, I wrote ‘thicc’ instead of ‘thick’ in front of 4th graders.
