- She pulls his head closer, and they watch the carnage unfold as only people at the end of a rope can. He knows Mary is right: run or don’t run, it probably won’t matter. The smaller creature is hardly a match for Marsalis, but it manages to provoke a few agonized shrieks from their monstrous comrade.
- Marsalis is a vicious fighter, using her superior strength and longer reach to smash the adversary against anything and everything. To Kamran’s amazement, their foe never surrenders. When Marsalis breaks off the end of its tail, it comes all the harder. After Marsalis crushes the beast’s knee joint the wrong way, the creature adopts a freakishly quick improvised crabwalk, flying in the face of natural motion and sanity. It assails Marsalis like something possessed, hungry for violence.
- Then Marsalis scores a coup. She stabs her barbed tail into the tubes along the alien’s neck, pushing and twisting as if plunging a spade into soil. The wild animal rages a moment longer, but finally succumbs to the wound.
- Marsalis turns to face them, gashes raked across her almost human lips. Acid runs in yellow rivulets down her teeth, spattering and smoking against the grated floors.
