- **DnD CAMPAIGN EXPECTATION STUFF:**
- Campaign Link: https://app.roll20.net/join/5102893/EG5E-g
- Resources: http://blaster3.net/dnd/
- Everyone involved is fairly new to DnD, so expect it to be a mess. We will likely run into a couple of instances of ruling where I’m not sure what to do, so some patience may be required. I am inexperienced but I will do my best.
- This entire campaign is essentially a test run that we’re diving head first into to see if we like DnD. If we like DnD, we can start over with more structure and real effort in the campaign/characters. Expect things to stay light-hearted and fun, but it’s not a meme run, there will be clear objectives to complete that (hopefully) require some effort on the parties’ part.
- We will be using Roll20 platform to play. We are running a premade campaign, “The Lost Mines of Phandelver.” But I see the campaign book as an outline/guideline and not a script to be followed. It will be customized. In general I would prefer if you guys don’t read the campaign books for stuff we run, but since this is our first time, I don’t care if you do this once. It’ll still be different in the end though.
- I am writing up some custom world setting for the campaign, while I will reveal later today or tomorrow.
- **Character Making:**
- For character creation, use Roll20’s character sheets. If you don’t know how or need permissions to edit, let me know. For rolling, we’re doing 4d6, drop the lowest, assign freely. You can reroll if you don’t get at least two 15s.
- Roll in the Roll20 campaign chat. You can do it with /roll 4d6d1.
- For now let’s avoid too many custom mechanics. If we take DnD more seriously I am willing to work in whatever custom character-based mechanics we want for RP or (reasonable) gameplay purposes, but for now, let’s try to keep things vanilla.
- If there is something more custom you absolutely want (for example, cat ears) just let me know and I will do my best to make it work.
- **Playstyle / DM Style:**
- I’m new to DM’ing so I don’t have a style yet. I will be growing as a DM as you are growing as players.
- That said, I can set some basic expectations. I want to run balanced campaigns. If you want to RP, then RP. If not, that’s fine, but you should still need to make in-game decisions based on what your *character* would do. Doing funny voices and stuff is fine for your characters if you want, but don’t expect that type of RP from me as a DM; story-wise, it’ll be more like narration.
- I strongly subscribe to the philosophy of DMs and Players not competing. As a DM I am there to guide and mediate the adventure. I’ll never go out of my way to kill or wipe you, and I won’t pull cheap tricks just to get the party to take damage. That said, I enjoy complex combat encounters and dungeon crawling, so expect traps, ambushes, and lots of encounters in areas where it might be appropriate according to the setting. The general dungeon experience of my campaign is probably going to be above average difficulty for DnD, but I will do my best to prevent things from ever being unfair.
- In proportion to that, I love good loot, items, and story progression. I want to pass those types of rewards on to adventurers that can complete difficult trials. Expect unique items and sometimes story-based benefit for completing hard content.
- Balancing this part of things will likely be one of the hardest parts of campaign running for me, so I don’t expect everything to work the first time, especially considering I lack knowledge of details about DnD stuff. thx for ur patience homies.
- There will be a main overarching plot for each arc/campaign I run, including this one. My campaigns will have reoccurring NPCs for you to interact with, and you’ll see benefits to getting familiar with or pleasing main characters in towns or the like. But the bulk of content will be dungeon crawling in the end.
- Getting through dungeon rooms will be a main emphasis, and rooms will be full of encounters, traps, ambushes, and some puzzles. You might also find other NPCs in dungeons, so dungeoning may cross over into social aspects. After a major crawl, expect to return to town for a breather. Despite the overall focus on dungeoning, you can also expect full town sessions later if we get into it. But, for this particular campaign, I think you will only go to town three times, and you will have the chance to interact with a few NPCs while there, but everything is downsized and simplified for this starter campaign.
- Regarding handholding… I’m the type of DM that will write a full side character, briefly mention their presence in a pub, then let you decide if you want to talk to them or not. If they are important to the story, they’ll appear later even if you ignore them, but the circumstances will become different compared to if you paid attention to them. Since I enjoy open-ended branching paths like this, some of it will be improv in the end. If you don’t investigate things properly, it’s possible you miss items or key events from NPCs.
- Despite this, there may be times I shove things down the parties’ throat if it’s really important to the campaign. There will be clear objectives in the end.
- Basically, even if we are only running a level 1-5 one shot, I’m still going to structure it like its the beginning of these character’s grander adventure. If we decide to expand this into a bigger campaign we can remake the characters, starting from level 5 - so we’d potentially continue with the same group, but if you want to tweak stuff or even change class, that’s fine.
- tl;dr:
- Balanced campaigns overall but focus leans towards dungeoning/loot, narration DM style, reoccurring NPCs with overarching plot, but decision making and responsibility to find stuff falls to the party in the end.
