  28. Traits:
  29. Shallow is a former earth pony, now what would be considered the first 'bat pony'. His fur is a dark, stony grey, with blue eyes that have faded to the point of looking almost whitish. He has facial hair that's a lighter grey than his fur, shaved similar to http://goo.gl/IwJkAX . His leathery wings are dark enough of purple to be considered black save for the slight bluish-purple it has.
  30. Shallow Grave is what some ponies would call a lich. Through extensive research in magic and life force, Grave was able to achieve a form of quasi-immortality.
  31. At a young age, it was clear Shallow Grave was magically talented, but lacked the means of focusing them. Having grown up in a library (his parents were especially fond of the somber poetry of the time, hence his name) he had plenty of knowledge yet lacked a formal education. However, he tried to overcome this hurdle, working as a tax collector for years until he could attend a magical academy in Unicornia. Once there, Shallow Grave wanted to pioneer the school of necromantic life energy. During the time, it was often believed that life was based off of souls that all sentient creatures had. However, Grave disputed this, using unintelligent animals and plants as arguing points. However, due to previous tensions with him being an earth pony as well as misunderstandings in diction, many of his peers and religious groups marked him as a radical. While he had never argued against the existence of the soul, he was misinterpreted as having had, and much of his work was branded as blasphemous.
  32. Shallow Grave was disheartened and withdrew himself from the university and public life, secluding himself to all but his close friends and family. Publishing his research when and where he could, Grave begun his research on what happens to the life force of a creature post-mortem. Sure, any novice necromancer could bottle up life force and push it into corpses to create the undead, but Shallow Grave was interested in what happened to that life force after death. While never fully understanding where or what it was, Grave discovered a plane of untapped power, a location which the life forces of all living things went after death. Shallow Grave was enthralled at his discovery, and wondered how he could utilized this immense finding to further pursue his research.
  33. It was then he created arguably his greatest theory to date: If one could channel the life force from the newly discovered plane into a living creature, that creature could live forever, perhaps even past death. His theory sparked even more controversy: he was called a madpony, trying to play god, and tampering with powers he did not understand. Whilst the latter was partially true, he did not let the persecution stop him, spending many years furthering his research towards proving his theory. Finally, at the age of 71, Shallow Grave had finished his link between his life force and the mysterious plane: a six foot tall monolith of stone inlaid with minor gemstones and runes. His creation ready to test, he invited some of his closer peers and remaining family to a social before it's test. After everyone was settled, Grave began.
  34. Shallow Grave started by transferring some of his existing life force into the pillar. Red wisps flowed into the stone, the pillar itself emitting a hum of power. This monolith would serve a dual purpose: both a tether for his life force to connect between himself and the plane - as well as a focus in which he'd draw power from the mysterious plane. He then allowed his life force to enter the plane, causing a feeling of airless suffocation within him. He quickly tugged back with his magic as a fisherman would reel a fish in. Indeed, his line of personal life force had caught something - the surge of life that resided in the mysterious plane. As his life force once again entered the pillar, the life power followed, causing the hum of the pillar to intensify and the sigils to glow red. The familiar red wisps trailed back into Shallow Grave at an expedient rate, and then, as sudden as it began, it was over.
  35. The seemingly inert pillar loomed over his audience as they sat in silence. While his family had enjoyed the light show, Shallow Grave and his attending colleagues knew this was only the first part of his test. Grave procured a knife from his satchel and dug a deep line across his opposite forehoof. The pain was unchanged by whatever magic had occurred, and he cried out as crimson dripped onto the floor. However, even before his cry of pain ended the sigils on the pillar grew red again, and wisps pushed into his body. The wound seemed to heal in rapid session, flesh regrowing over the laceration like thread being weaved. He and everyone else looked in amazement.
  36. He opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted by a sudden crippling pain. Collapsing to the floor, the onlookers watched with fear-filled concern. Protrusions jutted forward from his back, first nubs underneath the flesh and then ripped the flesh itself, bloodied bones protruding to form skeletal wings. Soon veins and muscles climbed up the bones like vines growing up a garden lattice, and a taught leather-like skin filled that in. In mere minutes, Shallow Grave had sprouted bat wings, shuddering on the floor as the pillar's glow faded again.
  37. Shallow Grave could never explain why he obtained bat wings that day, but speculation and rumors from his detractors say he made some sort of deal with an evil god, or maybe even became a demon himself. Now at the age of 122, Shallow is still mostly seclusive in nature. While charismatic after learning from past mistakes, he has a prejudice towards religious and low intelligence individuals. Over his extended lifespan, he continued into his research into life force, adapting it for a multitude of uses such as healing and combat. He also was able to shrink down his phylactery over time, making it so that he could travel with one wherever he went. A vexed scholar, Shallow continues to live his immortal life in relative happiness.
