so i've been sort of talking back and forth with forstride recently because i've started running AC all debts, even though i don't have a way to record it right now. if i were you i guess i wouldn't believe me, but i beat forstride's wr by almost two minutes, and i have the splits but i also wanted to mention something else that i also brought up to forstride.

i'm currently using a third party memory card which i looked up on nintendo world report and found a review of (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/3872/mega-memory-16x-memory-card-gamecube). just in using it in runs i found that it saved much faster than your files saved in your runs, as well as in forstride's. the article i linked corroborates this, saying that in their tests of the memory card, it saved large files (>20 blocks) faster than first party nintendo memory cards. the drawback to this is that with those larger files, there is a chance that it will encounter an error in saving, which during an AC run costs a fair amount of time, which has happened to me during runs.

however, during my current pb, i luckily didn't have any saving problems, so it's a risk, but when it works out the time saved on saving is really worth it.

like i said, you can take it or leave it, but my current pb is 39:02.7 and i'm hoping to start streaming attempts as soon as i get a recording device to potentially beat that time, though it will be really difficult. i had a three-tier town, but villager placement was good and chores weren't bad, and i also had A2 nook's (which, if i'm not mistaken, is slightly faster than A4 nook's, right?). my time will be very difficult to beat, but i think that sub 39 is technically possible, as there were a few suboptimal moments throughout the run (though most of those were rng-based).

anyway, in any case, i wanted to thank you for your tutorial vid as it really helped me learn the category a lot, and i hope you and forstride stream legit attempts in the near future, as i really think all debts is a fun run to watch.

If you're running on a 3rd party memory card that isn't a valid run. If it isn't official Nintendo licensed hardware, it isn't really fair. This is a standard with most games. I appreciate the kind words but please if you're going to join this community you're going to need to play by the standards. If you want to beat your own and time and improve on it that's fine but it simply isn't comparable to Forstride's time. Saving time using 3rd party software is absolutely not allowed.

dude, this is dumb. i really didn't want to create any kind of strife between us, because i really have enjoyed your runs and really love ac and really enjoyed learning the game, but this isn't a matter of "fairness". this is because you two apparently just found out that if you want to optimize your runs to the maximum, you gotta go buy a new memory card (which, btw, is probably cheaper than the first party one anyway). not to mention the fact that i brought up to forstride that i was using a "generic" memory card several days ago and he said himself that i should try "comparing your load times to how it is in my WR video", acknowledging in that very statement that hey, perhaps save/load times vary across memory cards, but saying nothing to the effect that some should/shouldn't be allowed. until when? until today, when i told him i beat his time by well over a minute.

now i know you guys are just playing this game for fun, and it's sort of more of a casual speedgame so you don't care to get super bloody competitive, which is cool, and i like that because you guys both seem really chill and agreeable and i hope we can maybe even race in the future. but i'm simply not going to get another memory card just because it has been arbitrated by the only other two random american suburbanite gamers that we discriminate "official Nintendo licensed hardware" when we're just talking about a damn memory card.

to me this is about recording a piece of art--the completion of a game as efficiently and effectively and quickly as possible. i know forstride voiced his distaste to me about the oot community allowing use of the ique, but that comparison doesn't even need to be made because it's hardly even applicable. but if the run is to be completed as quickly as possible i'm gonna keep using the better memory card. if that means i don't show up on some "official" leaderboards consisting of my name and the names of four other random people who also have nothing better to do than speedrun a life-simulation game for fun, then i'll live with that. but i'll still post the youtube vid and it will more likely than not still say "[WR]".

again, sorry. i wanna be friends cuz like i said, you guys seem chill and this run is really cool. you can respond however you want...but that's how i feel. and i hardly think that your and forstride's experience of having run this game a mere 6-8 months to a year longer than me makes your feelings any more valid than mine.

We were both very aware that a larger memory card saves time and if someone with an official memory card of a larger size saved time there would have been no issue, the problem is you're using unofficial hardware to save time and that is absolutely not allowed. You can keep running on that memory card but it's stupid to compare your time to Forstride's and claim a world record when you aren't following the rules. You're more than welcome to join the community, and even race us, but I absolutely refuse to accept your run as a world record and I know the rest of the speedrunning community will agree.



I really don't care what Forstride said, and an iQue comparison doesn't make sense to me either. What makes sense to me is that a piece of 3rd party hardware is saving you time. You can't just ignore this, we need to come to a decision. If you want to join the Animal Crossing community then we can have a community discussion and reach a conclusion together, I'm perfectly open to that. However if you want to insult me and say I have nothing better to do with my life than I'm not really going to be open to communicating with you much longer.

okay. essentially what i'm getting at is a couple things.

first of all, when you say you're perfectly open to having "a community discussion and reach a conclusion together", what you really mean is that once i agree with you two, or rather, once i submit to your opinion (whether or not i agree) then i can "join the community". second, as far as i can tell, the "community" consists of like you, forstride, thatraregamer, and maybe brianmp16 (or whatever his name is) even though he doesn't seem to run all debts. and like whatever twitter followers of yours that will rifle off an opinion on the issue. so for example, in forstride's chat last night, of course the issue came up so there was much discussion about it, and basically all raregamer could say was that if i kept using my memory card, my run would be "bullshit." bullshit? that's the best you can say? so i'm to believe that if i keep using my same memory card and post a video to youtube, regardless of whether or not it says "[WR]", all that's going to happen is you three goofballs are gonna flame the comments section like "this is bullshit" and "sooooo unlegit" and "this urn isn't a real urn guys it's totally unfair". well like...i hope you can start to see why i just don't give a shit. when i said that thing about having nothing better to do but speedrun this game, i really wasn't trying to insult you--what i was trying to say is that we're basically all just random college-age dudes who enjoy speedrunning this game. you and forstride have no more power over this kind of decision than i do, and you know that, because like i said, the best you could do is something like call my run "bullshit" and boycott my stream or some such nonsense. there is no "council of elders" in the animal speedrunning community that can singlehandedly strike down my run, erase it from youtube and the public consciousness, and curse my offspring for using a third party memory card. if i got WR with this memory card, i would post it to youtube claiming it as such, and all that would happen on your end is that...you would "consider it bullshit"? that means nothing to me, especially when the reason i'm running this game is for myself anyway.

that said, i may buy a new memory card in the future ESPECIALLY if it's faster and also if it's more reliable, because i have very occasionally had issues with mine. however, i'm not going to do it JUST because you two, who have been running the game marginally longer than me (a year is virtually no time at all as far as i'm concerned) decided that my run is inadmissible. AC isn't on SDA, and the rest of the speedrunning community at large has no interest in this issue. also, it's important to note that i'm not being so vehement about this JUST because the memory card is faster, but also because i legitimately do not see an issue whatsoever with using a third party memory card. i would love to know what other gamecube speedrunning titles that require saving throughout the run explicitly disallow third party memory cards, because i have a feeling it's none of them.

i'm sorry, because i know it seems like i'm blatantly being a dick just for the sake of being a dick, but if you knew me in real life you would find i always respond to this kind of shoddy reasoning like this, internet or no internet. "what we say goes because we've been here longer" is not a reason, it's a straight up logical fallacy. i do want to get along, and i do want to be friends, and i do want you guys to watch my stream, but if you don't then it's really no skin off my nose. i hope you can kind of see where i'm coming from, at least from the perspective that you guys really don't have any power over me and what you say really doesn't matter in the scope of a community consisting of a handful of individuals. say what you will, block me if you want, but this is my stance.

If you don't care what we have to say then why even alert us in the first place. It's obvious you aren't going to budge on your opinion so go ahead and upload the video, I'm not an immature little kid who is going to flame your fucking comments dude Jesus Christ. I think you really seem to have the wrong impression about me. I'm not trying to say that we're some high and mighty group that will force you to denounce your run, I'm sure you have a good run. You seem to be attacking us a lot and I'm really not sure where the hostility is coming from, I really can't see anything that would give you the impression you need to be acting like that. We aren't like plotting some way to take you down or going to hate on you or your stream.



For the record, the community consists of me, Woobly, Forstride, Fasch, thatraregamer and 0xA101 aka Adrian. Brianmp16 is mostly on his own.



I'm not saying each one of us has more power than you lol I'm saying we agreed that a 3rd party memory card that is saving time invalidates your run in our opinion. That's all. We don't have more power than you nor are we saying we have power over you, I'm just saying that the 2 of us disagree with the legitimacy of your run. That's really it. I'm getting a bit frustrated with the way you've been responding, especially jumping to conclusions about the way we're going to react or the way you're perceiving our ideas like we're trying to boss you around or something. I assumed that because you messaged me about your run and the issue, you wanted my opinion. I'm sorry that you didn't get the answer you seemed to want.



Anyways, I'm really tired of this argument especially if you're responding this way. You really don't have to be a dick about this, I'm willing to talk with you and the rest of the runners to see if we can reach an agreement. If that happens though I really would appreciate if you wouldn't have such an attitude.
