  7. Happy Anniversary
  8.
  9. "Kantai Collection -KanColle-" manages to dive into the seas for a fifth year! Having just celebrated the fourth anniversary, we'll take a look back on the game's wake, along with interviewing both the Management Naval District, for the latest info, and the seiyuu cast as well. There's lots of info coming your way! KanColle anniversary edition, start!
  10.
  11. Cast Comments on KanColle's Fourth Anniversary
  12. Bridcut Sarah Emi
  13. Big congratulations to KanColle for its fourth anniversary!
  14. I'm deeply thankful that Yuubari got to be on the cover with Yura.
  15. Yuubari with glasses on for once, the gap moe, it's just, kyun! And Yura's lovely, sorta embarrassed thinking face made me go kyun too!
  16. I'm truly grateful for the huge amount of support from everyone, and for the chance KanColle gave for these precious characters to meet.
  17. From the bottom of my heart, congratulations!
  18.
  19. Tanibe Yumi
  20. Congratulations to KanColle for its fourth anniversary!
  21. And thank you so much.
  22. I was really happy celebrating this spring with all the admirals. A two-shot with Yura-san and Yuubari-san on the cover this issue!? These two are so cute! And the glasses are wonderful!
  23. Yura-san's expression kinda seems like she's close enough to Yuubari-san that she doesn't have to be so reserved, doesn't it~♪
  24. Into the fifth year with Yura-san and the others!
  25. Please continue to support KanColle, kay?

  38. It's now the fifth spring since KanColle was born into this world and its fourth anniversary.
  39. KanColle had a small, small start, born from my desire to tell the story, to connect to, the present the struggles of those that once gallantly fought, sank, and passed away.
  40.
  41. I think the shipgirls must be truly happy, that the many admirals raised them and that they got to spend more time than they ever thought possible with everyone.
  42.
  43. To all the admirals supporting the shipgirls and KanColle, the fleets these girls serve: from the bottom of my heart, I express my thanks. Thank you very much.
  44.
  45. May each and every one of your thoughts, wishes, and prayers reach these girls that once roamed the seas.
  46.
  47. In its fifth year, you can expect KanColle to continue its voyage bit-by-bit, as always. Please continue to support the shipgirls in the future.

  74. Performing two polar opposites!
  75. Interviewer (I): Iowa became a big hit when she was implemented in Spring 2016. How did you feel when you were chosen for the role?
  76. Hashimoto (H): I'd already heard about KanColle of course, so it was such an honor to be considered for a part in such an popular work. To be honest, at first I didn't know that Iowa would be the first American shipgirl. The day KanColle Kai went on sale, Twitter's Trending Topics was packed with words related to KanColle and Iowa. It was when I saw that that I first realized just how big a deal it was. I had no idea things would blow up like they did, so I was really happy with myself. I bought a personal copy of the Comptiq issue with Iowa on the cover (June 2016) and treasured it.
  77.
  78. I: Thank you! What was your first impression of Iowa?
  79. H: A big-breasted and sexy oneesan, with all this powerful-looking equipment. On top of that, I realized that since she's from America she'd have a lot of English lines. I don't speak English at all, so I was honestly a little worried about if I would be okay for the role. So I looked up English pronunciation on my own and tried my best to act.
  80.
  81. I: What stuck with you as you portrayed Iowa?
  82. H: When you're portraying adults, you have your own voice that you need to stretch away from, and you need to watch your sentence endings - you have to keep in mind that you're acting more adultlike. But for Iowa, I was told, "She's a bright and active girl, so go for a cute image", so I kept "excited and happy" in mind as I acted.
  83.
  84. I: Cheerfully meeting the Admiral and the other shipgirls without a hint of shyness is one of Iowa's traits, isn't it?
  85. H: She's the kind of girl that would reach out to any shipgirl that takes her interest. She might talk with Yamato so much that Yamato finds her a little too lively (laugh). She's close to her Admiral's heart from the start as well, so I made her marriage line clearly happy.
  86.
  87. I: The other shipgirl you portray, Yamakaze, appeared much later, in Fall 2016. What was your first impression of Yamakaze?
  88. H: When I first read the script, that line "don't mind me" made me think, what a gloomy girl. But as I studied for the role, I realized she just wasn't being honest herself and does want your attention. When you complement or thank her, she goes "It's nothing", but even these lines that sound like rejections on the surface have some happiness tucked inside that I kept in mind as I did her role.
  89.
  90. I: Iowa's quite the bright girl, but Yamakaze has this image of an awkward girl trying but failing to be bright, right?
  91. H: Yamakaze is the kind of girl that can't quite express her own emotions, or at least not to the person in question. For example, in her Christmas seasonal, she goes, "Yaaay", but it's got this funny feeling to it, right? I wasn't sure just how much emotion to show, so I made myself to do it many times over. In her marriage line, I felt the "..." in the line revealed some of Yamakaze's feelings as well, so I kept in mind how I would bring out that nuance as I acted.
  92.
  93. I: Yamakaze's sinking line caused quite a stir among Admirals for all the emotion that went into it.
  94. H: I was told that in real life, Yamakaze was not only the first of Shiratsuyu-class to sink but also sank without anyone nearby to notice. I thought that terrifying loneliness had to be something that stuck in the shipgirl's heart. So I told myself that here, where Yamakaze's feelings would come bursting out, I had to reach for the call of her heart as I acted.
  95.
  96. I: Would you mind telling us any shipgirls you like besides the ones you portrayed?
  97. H: I chose Samidare as my first secretary ship. "She's in the same Shiratsuyu-class as Yamakaze," I thought as I picked her. But she's a bright and cute girl, so I grew quite fond of her as I played - I like her very much. I've also grown quite fond of Kawakaze and the other Shiratsuyu-class sisters. I'm personally quite close with the voice actor of Kawakaze and Umikaze, Ishigami Shizuka-san. When I was chosen for Yamakaze's role, I told her, "I'm going to be Zucchi's (Ishigami's) sister!", she was really happy for me.
  98.
  99. I: You've portrayed two shipgirls so far - if you had the opportunity, what kind of girl would you like to try next?
  100. H: Iowa's a bright girl, while Yamakaze's a quiet one, so I'd love to try a girl that's sorta in between. Someone with Umikaze's motherly feeling, or a gentle atmosphere? Also, I like girls like Uzuki with special sentence endings, so I'd love to give that a shot if given the opportunity.
  101.
  102. I: Is there anything you'd like to see in KanColle going forward?
  103. H: I'd love to see Iowa and Yamakaze in more outfits. Iowa in an American flag bikini or something would totally fit. For Yamakaze...
  104. I'd love to see a swimsuit or something that shows she's so pale it's worrying, or a Santa costume or something that's way too big for her. It'd be fun to see a collaboration with a real ship outside the game, wouldn't it? I'd love to do the onboard PA or something, so if there's an opportunity please reach me!
  105.
  106. I: Finally, do you mind giving a message to the Comptiq readers?
  107. H: Congratulations to KanColle on its fourth anniversary. I've only been involved for a year, but the huge response I've gotten in such a short time has made me really happy. I'll continue to do my best to liven up KanColle. Thank you for your continued support!
  108.

  132.
  133. Special Attention Paid to the Switching between English and Japanese
  134. Interviewer (I): Uchida-san, I've heard that portraying Warspite was your very first role. How did it feel?
  135. Uchida (U): I've lived in Australia my whole life, but KanColle is well known even abroad, and I saw a lot of people discussing it or cosplaying. So I was really surprised that my first job would get to be such a huge role.
  136. I: Were you interested in anime and manga when you lived in Australia?
  137. U: Yeah. We hear a lot about Japanese anime and manga, so I saw many different works. I only started really living in Japan about three years ago, and that's when I realized that there's a lot of ones we didn't hear about in Australia. I watched a lot and used them for motivation as I learned how to be a voice actor.
  138.
  139. I: What was your first impression of your character, Warspite?
  140. U: When I saw her art for the first time, I thought she seemed to have this refreshing beauty. That little crown resting on her head is cute too, isn't it? From the moment I saw her, I couldn't look away, like love at first sight. My impression back then was of an elegant lady, but throughout her lines, she's actually quite the airhead. Going out of her walk to talk about "genuine black tea" - I thought she was a charmingly cute girl for trying to bring up her birthplace, Britain, like that. A lot of her lines are spent talking about food, as if she thinks the food on base is delicious - maybe she has a bit of a foodie side to her.
  141.
  142. I: She mixes her English and Japanese a lot in her speech, doesn't she?
  143. U: Doing her English lines, I wondered which audience to double down on getting the message across to - the admirals in Japan, or the ones abroad? I made sure to speak clearly and precisely. When switching from English into Japanese, I focused on not letting my speech sound broken in either. English and Japanese differ in tone, so turning on a dime during recording was hard - I remember having quite a tough time of it.
  144.
  145. I: Any examples of when?
  146. U: Her sortie line, "Sally go! Main fleet, weigh anchor!". Keeping the energy from "Sally go!" while switching to Japanese was hard. There's a brief pause after "Sally go!", but if it's too long the line loses impact, so I shortened it as much as I could. And her docking line, "I'll be in the docks for a bit. See you later." When doing Japanese lines with English words slipped in like that, I had to take care with the switch.
  147.
  148. I: What major impression did Warspite's lines leave on you?
  149. U: In rare, special moments like her Valentine's line, she calls the admiral "My Admiral". Overseas, emphatically telling your loved one "I really like you" is quite common. I thought Warspite used "My", as in "mine alone", in that same way - a very foreign shipgirl-like expression of love. That's one of the lines I really like.
  150. I: Warspite also calls the admiral "My Admiral" in her marriage line.
  151. U: The idea behind that line is that she's really happy to get the ring from the admiral. I think the reaction to getting a ring is a lot bigger overseas, so I had to go for a reaction like "Is it really for me?". I put a lot into that of my own accord (laugh).
  152.
  153. Side Quote: Warspite's attractiveness comes from being not only refined but also just a bit of an airhead.
  154.
  155. I: By the way, are there other shipgirls you like?
  156. U: Shoukaku-san's my secretary ship right now. She speaks with a gentle voice - it's always so soothing. She's the kind of person you'd want to call your oneesan. Visually, I like long-haired girls like Yamato and Amatsukaze. I think the way long hair sorta floats is super cute.
  157.
  158. I: Uchida-san, you took part in the "Naval District Sanma Festival in Yokohama Anchorage" in October 2016. As it was your first time performing in a live event, how did it feel at the time?
  159. U: I was really nervous. I was introduced last, so I was trembling the whole time out of nervousness. When she saw me like that, Fujita Saki-san along with the rest talked to me and calmed me down. I might've clammed up on stage if not for them. But grilling the sanma and trying to break the mochi* for the first time, all in front of everyone who came to see us - it was really fun. It was my first charcoal-grilled sanma, and it was really delicious with a wonderful aroma!
  160. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kagami_biraki
  161.
  162. I: What would you personally like to do in KanColle in the future?
  163. U: I'd like to do a really lively shipgirl, or a girl with a different feel from Warspite. But having lines in English was fun, so if other British ships come out, I'd like to take that challenge on as well. The Naval District Sanma Festival was really fun, so I'd like to appear in other big, annual, live events, like the KanColle Naval Review. I want to have a great time with a big crowd of fans.
  164. I: And finally, a message for the Comptiq readers, please.
  165. U: Congratulations on your fourth anniversary, KanColle! And to all the admirals, thank you for playing KanColle. I hope the admirals get to spend more time with Warspite and continue to play KanColle in the future.
  166. I: Thank you very much!
  167.
  168. Uchida's Message:
  169. Hello, Admiral.
  170. Thank you for playing KanColle.
  171. For Everyone who's got Warspite,
  172. please use her a lot.
  173. And everyone please keep playing KanColle.

  180. Celebrating the Fourth Anniversary: A Celebratory Visit to the Management Naval District!
  181. Congratulations! The KanColle Management Naval District's Fourth Anniversary!
  182.
  183. T-Ko (Interviewer, I): Congrats! Congratulations on the fourth anniversary! So Comptiq this month is suddenly having this all-out special feature! So big it's got 40 pages and a pin-up included!
  184. Tanaka-ko (T): That's wonderful! Thank you very much!
  185. I: Man, looking back, we've come so far, haven't we? The fifth year, already.
  186. T: We really have~ Lots has happened, but all in the blink of an eye. We were prepared to last only half a year at worst, but for KanColle from its small, small start to reach the three year and eight month milestone* - its thanks to the support of all the admirals, the backing and assistance of our colleagues, and everyone's collaboration that we've been able to come this far. I'm truly grateful.
  187. * The length of the Pacific War: December 7, 1941 to August 15/September 2, 1945
  188.
  189. I: Mhm. There were five thousand pre-registrations back then! You were really happy, weren't you?
  190. T: That's right... a lot of this seems like it happened just yesterday, yet when you think about it actually feels like such a long time ago. It's strange... oh, but I shouldn't be rambling, we're in the middle of setting up this spring's limited-time event, so...
  191. I: Ah, don't worry. We'll be fishing info about that from you!
  192. T: Don't put it like that!
  193.
  194. With the Fourth Anniversary Spring Event, coastal defense ships are finally being implemented!
  195. I: The spring event will have started by the time this issue of Comptiq is published, right?
  196. T: This event, the stage will be from Hokkaido to the northeast sea, starting from Tsugaru strait and extending to the southern Chishima Islands* and then the farthest northern reaches of the Chishima Islands. The first half of the operation will involve bringing together the robust Fifth Fleet's strength to secure the northern defenses. Admirals that do well in the first half will be able to continue in the latter half in a defensive operation at that far northern island.
  197. T: Ooooooh.
  198. * The Kuril Islands.
  199.
  200. T: It's a hypothetical [IF] operation with a base on fleet plans, but the motif behind the event is a battle that should not be forgotten. There are a lot of ships with names from northern regions like Hokkaido and the Chishima Islands, not to mention Suzuya*, who just got her Kai Ni. This event, there will be Shumshu, first of the Shumshu-class coastal defense ships; Kunashiri, second of the same class; and Kamoi, a fleet oiler-turned-seaplane tender who served her final missions as a transport ship. These new coastal defense ships are smaller than destroyers and meant primarily for coastal and littoral zones. While very small warships with limited firepower, they served to the end as a critical ASW and escort force.
  201. I: Shipgirls even smaller than the destroyers!?
  202. T: That's right. Of course, these girls won't be used in decisive fleet battles, but I believe in KanColle they will grow to become an important pillar among the shipgirls. And again, I can't stress enough the importance of ASW and escorts: I'd like to introduce the remodeled escort carrier sisters, who met untimely deaths.
  203. * The Suzuya river in Karafuto (Sakhalin).
  204.
  205. I: The one being implemented this time is Taiyou, right!?
  206. T: Right. Three passenger-cargo liner sisters who, long before KanColle and the modern anthropomorphic trend were already depicted as beautiful women*. They were remodeled into special carriers, supporting from the rear in logistics and such. Toward the bitter end of the war they were deployed as escort ships, but they were unable to utilize their full capabilities and sank.
  207. I: I looked into it. They weren't able to fulfill their purpose, were they...
  208. T: In KanColle, too, they'll start off weak, but if you put in the effort to raise them, before long their unique capabilities will shine. It'll be a hypothetical [IF], but there will be an additional remodel ready, for if Taiyou had lived long enough to succeed in her escort role... Please look forward to it. That remodel will require a prototype flight deck catapult, but you'll be able to acquire one during the latter half of the event on all difficulties.
  209. * The N.Y.K. Line's three liners. http://www.postersplease.com/image.php?s=600&id=45_352
  210.
  211. The Huge, Full-Sized Zuiun Plan Continues! New KanColle Collabs Are About to Take Off!
  212. I: Come to think of it, how's the 1/1 scale Zuiun plan coming along?
  213. T: Nice and steadily! After our prep for the spring event is finished, we'll make a progress report if possible... the annual Shizuoka Hobby Show happens to be coming up this May, so we hope to be able to make a progress report there, even if we can only exhibit just some of the parts... that's the plan. Thanks to the Shizuoka Model Teaching Aid Cooperative for lending us a spot... I hope we can make it in time!*
  214. I: Wow, so it continues!
  215. * It's happening. https://twitter.com/KanColle_STAFF/status/862113166196486144
  216.
  217. T: Also, by early summer we have a collab planned that'll make you go, "Ah, what is this~?" I think we'll be able to announce it before long. And also, I know KanColle Naval Reviews are usually in the summer, but we're preparing to perhaps hold a slightly bigger one in the fall instead.
  218. I: Ooooh! So we're getting a Naval Review this year too. Fall~!
  219. T: And prior to that, there's the seven-city KanColle Orchestral Tour. This year is packed with loads of plans before fall. And finally, after the spring event is over...
  220.
  221. Is It Finally Time for a Main Battleship's Kai Ni!?
  222. I: It's finally time! This is it!
  223. T: Hey! Why're you holding that! * See the picture bottom left of the page
  224. I: Er, it was in a folder lying on the desk earlier... ahh, it's finally here.
  225. T: That's right. After the spring event, Nagato, first of the Nagato-class battleships, will be getting her Kai Ni remodel as Nagato Kai Ni. Additionally, the sister of an aircraft cruiser that already got her remodel, as well as multiple light cruiser are all having remodels prepared.
  226. I: Wow, you serious!?
  227. T: There might be wrinkles of course, but the plan is to have comparatively more Kai Ni remodels this year. There are definitely several coastal defense ships I want to introduce the latter half of this year. Also, we'll be implementing Gangut, first of the Gangut-class battleships, but we are further preparing to add more foreign ships, such as one with that led a checkered career.*
  228. Richilieu? Jean Bart? USS Steward (DD-224)? Who knows.
  229.
  230. I: Things are getting more and more exciting! First things first, gotta beat this event and meet Taiyou! Thank you very much for talking with us today! Congratulations on the fourth anniversary! I'm really looking forward to the fifth year!

  242. Congratulations to KanColle for its Fourth Anniversary!
  243. Thanks to the support of all the admirals, we're able to celebrate our fifth spring. As always, thank you very much!
  244. For Comptiq-san's cover, Management Naval District-san and I conferred, and I was asked to draw Yura-san mid-fitting with Yuubari-san!
  245. This year, don't you get the feeling that, starting with Arashio, a lot of fourth ships got Kai Ni's?
  246. When this issue is published, I think the admirals will be mid-event but, let's do our best together~!
  247.
  248. Comptiq's KanColle Manager, Takano Ken'ichi
  249. I'm sincerely grateful for this opportunity to celebrate KanColle's fifth year at sea milestone with a cover and first article feature like this.
  250. Congratulations to KanColle for its Fourth Anniversary.
  251. The shipgirls enchanting figures and personalities never get sale, and even as the game mechanics get deeper new admirals can continue to enjoy the game. KanColle continues to bring on the surprises.
  252. I'm sure there will be many more developments in the future, but I hope the admirals can continue to lend their strength, if even only a little, to KanColle's continued efforts in its fifth year at sea.
  253. Once again, congratulations.

  258. Congratulations to KanColle for its Fourth Anniversary!
  259. With the introduction of shipgirls from a variety of homelands, the land-based air corps system, and the release of the Android version, the game continues its steady advance.
  260. Additionally, the anime movie was released then screened in 4DX and MX4D, Cafe Irako opened [in Yokosuka], the collab with department store Mitsukoshi, etc...
  261. This past year alone, development has continued beyond the confines of the game itself.
  262. It brings me great joy to be able to inform the admirals of these developments through our articles. I hope we were able to convey at least a little fun.
  263. When this issue goes on sale, the game will be mid-event. I wonder how far I'll have gotten? How will our fights on the sea look during the fifth year? I hope my own battles will continue to be enjoyable in the future.
