It passed close to Eiji's hiding place, and for only a moment the creature seemed to slow, its hideous face flicked toward the shadows. Toward him. As it ran by him, though, Eiji saw that there was something decidedly inorganic about the monster. There was a device-round, metallic, and glowing with internal light-set into the side of that enormous head. As soon as the creature began to slow, distracted by something closer, it suddenly shrieked and twisted, falling to hands and knees. The implant flared with bright yellow light as the thing crumpled. Eiji looked from the squirming, shrieking creature to a fourth and even more shocking figure on the field. It, too, was hideous and strange. As if the day wanted to present life in all its malformed combinations, the thing seemed to be both monstrous and human.
It was very tall, at least eight or nine feet, and had a body so packed and corded with muscle that it was almost a caricature. Something from anime rather than real life.
