Letter 1: Sukondawa! IRyS, congrats on your 2.0 redesign! It retained the elements from 1.0 while improving the cuteness levels! Ever since debut you have always been good at Japanese , better than Miko even, I thought, shouldn't Miko be in EN and IRyS be in JP?

🏴‍☠️ : For example, in my newest song [I'm your Treasure Box] there is an English part in the middle. The person who wrote the song is from an English-speaking country (Toby Fox) so he taught me how I am supposed to pronounce each of the lines. Would someone from overseas be able to understand all of it?

💎 : There are sounds a native speaker would omit entirely, so that is why it's different from the katakana reading.
🏴‍☠️ : This is something I have been thinking about since I appeared on Gura's live. We sang Tricolore Airline, but the way Gura say Tricolore Airline is like Tricolore Airline, she doesn't say Air-ru-rian.
💎 : It's the syllables. What was it in Japanese again? Airline in Japanese is 5 syllables, while in English it's just two. So singing like a native speaker can mess up the intended syllable count in a Japanese song. When that happens it's better to sing according to the katakana reading

Letter 2: Sukondawa! This year and the next two, the stage has been set for yet another battle. Yes, next year's HoloFes ticket wars. There are 3 stages next year, and for the trios I am interested to see what the EN2 and ID2  can bring to the table!

💎 : They do, but they would rather use the term "Concert" for it

🏴‍☠️ : When I used to advertise my lives on foreign sites like Reddit I was worried if they would understand what I mean by live, so I looked it up and found out that concert is the word I should be using. But live work too?
🌽 : Music lives are concerts, but lives refer to livestreaming? Live story?

🏴‍☠️ : I knew that, like haishin also means 配 (distribute) + 達 (delivery), so I write "stream".
💎 : Of course lives implies that it is a classical concert.

IT'S LIKE THE KATAKANA....OR NOT?
🌽 : We have gathered katakana words commonly used in everyday life. Some of which are the words we think are English but is actually completely Japanese in origin, the so-called "Waseigo". This time we will be asking Hololive English's IRyS to look at some of these and tell us what she thinks of them.
🏴‍☠️ : I'm pretty curious about some of them, like "pet bottle"
🌽 : But pet bottle is a pet bottle
💎 : That makes zero sense in English

💎 : Pet bottle....what do you mean by pet?
🌽 : Pet's bottle...I think I can see why
💎 : Have you ever questioned why it is called a PET bottle in the first place?
🏴‍☠️ : No idea...I just buy them and call it a pet bottle
💎 : The PET refers to the material, plastic. We just call them plastic bottle, what is PET short for I wonder?

Submission 1: Marine's favorite food, Furaido Poteto. It would appear that this is actually a Waseigo. The correct name for it is "French Fries" in the US and "Chips" in the UK
( 🏴‍☠️ : Don't mess around with me that is clearly not a chip) If you want to do Maringlish correctly what if you call it "French Fries"?
🌽 : So how do you pronounce it?
💎 : The way Marine said it just now is the correct one, French Fries
🏴‍☠️ : When I was attending an Eikaiwa course a long time ago they taught me how to pronounce Makkudonarudo the correct way and it was like McDo ⤵️ nards ⤴️

Submission 2:  Have you seen the word "Misin" (Sewing Machine) before? This is actually an exclusive Japanese word and it is called a "Sewing Machine" in English. The reason it became "Misin" is because when the sewing machine first made its way over Japanese people misunderstood the name.
🏴‍☠️ : Then were did the sewing went????
💎 : There are other machines other than this one too
🏴‍☠️ : Perhaps the sewing machine was the first Misin to made its way here. Like "May I present you our Sewing Machine".
💎 : This makes no sense in English
🏴‍☠️ : But like will you ever get to use the word "Misin" when you are overseas?
💎 : Other than in sewing shops probably no
🏴‍☠️ ; There is a word, not toilet, but when you ask for directions the word in your head is different so it wouldn't go through. They don't understand "toilet"?
💎 : We do, but the way you say it like "Otoire" might makes it hard
🌽 : If I say "where toilet" would you understand?
💎 I do, restrooms are okay too but bathrooms are the most preferred
🌽 : Oh yeah houses overseas have the toilet and the bathroom all in one room!
💎 : All three are fine
🏴‍☠️ : But I don't take baths in a shop's toilet...how mysterious
💎 : I get confused by it sometimes

Submission 3: I heard somewhere before the the term "parallel world" so popular in games and anime is a Waseigo. The meaning seems to get through but it seems that the term "parallel universe" is preferred

💎 : To give an example...ummm...like that thing that is super popular right now...yeah that! That! The superhero universe thing

💎 : All the shared universes, Metaverse too came from universe.  So using "universe" is preferred over "world".
🏴‍☠️ : What's the meaning of universe?
💎 : Many worlds all sharing the same space
🏴‍☠️ : Hololive Universe?
💎 : The goal of HoloEarth is to become something like that
🌽 : What about our (Babacorn) song "Happiness World"? What would be the correct English rendering of it?
💎 : Well..if it's the correct English name the positions would change to "World Happiness". Happiness World means like a happy world. First time hearing the name Babacorn. When I was handed the script I was confused over who this "Babacorn" is supposed to be.
🏴‍☠️ : See? No one knows it! Babacorn is the unit composed of me and Fubuki. Now IRyS, why do you think it's named that?

🌽 : When overseas people say "KONO BABA!!!" how do they say it?
💎 : if it's the same mood then...I wonder...a word that disses an older woman's age...

💎 : Normally speaking we use "Grandmother", but that implies that you are close to the person so [censored] and [censored] and [censored] is used. (I assume Old fucker). I don't use such rough words, no, IRyS does not know anything about those at all ✨
🌽 : I see, Japanese is quite complex after all.
🏴‍☠️ : In [Your Name] when Mitsuha and Taki first switch bodies there was a scene when they were confused over which pronoun to use (ore, watashi, boku). How is that scene translated in English-speaking countries? Just "me"?
💎 : We don't have those in English. Actually, I am not sure though as I haven't seen the English dub for it.
🏴‍☠️ : From what I saw it's just a bunch of me's so I think it would be a weird scene overseas.
💎 : That is what makes Japanese unique

Submission 4: We think of them as the katakana version of an English word, but there are a lot of merchandise names that makes zero sense in English. For example, clear files. It is called a plastic document folder in English. My overseas Otaku friends have no idea what a clear file is so I looked it up.
💎 : There are a lot of words like that, but plastic document folder is a bit long. We would just call it "plastic folder" or just "folder". The document part is omitted because naturally a folder would carry a document.
🏴‍☠️ : Then what does "clear file" mean?
💎 : What is a file even? When you say file we think about the digital file. If you explain it to me I think I will get it., but like "can you pass me the clear file?", what is the clear file? Just call it folder.
🌽 : Hololive holders?
💎 : Probably better to call them Hololive character folders, we are characters after all
🌽 : Wait...Plastic Document Folder....PDFs?????
💎 : Is that so??? What does plastic have to do with it??? It's digital

Submission 5:  I want to hear what IRyS makes of this word. Notopasokon (notebook)

💎 : When you say notopasokon I think about the nooto part, the notebok. Pasokon is also Japanese, it's computer in English.
🌽 : it's from Personal Computer.
🏴‍☠️ ; So it's a shorthand?
💎 : Japanese does this a lot
🌽 : Conbini is also that.
💎 : So Pasokon would also confuse me
🏴‍☠️ : I think it's just because we cannot pronounce the original word. Like convenience store? That is way too long, conbini is good enough.
💎 : In English there are a lot of words. Now Twitter has a different way of counting the letters, but before when Japanese and English has the same cap it was difficult to tweet. anything in English because you can't shorten it with kanji. Now a letter in English counts as 0.5 Japanese letters. It's going to be long no matter what
🌽 : What is Notopasokon in English?
💎 : Laptop, a computer that you can use on "top" of your "lap". We omit the computer part. "Laptop" is enough

Submission 6:  Bike, in Japan we use the term "bike" for motorcycles, but it seems like overseas bikes just refer to bicycles. They seem to use the term "autobikes" over there
💎 : We just call them "motorcycles", we don't use autobikes. Bikes are 自転車. We understand "bicycle".
🌽 : Motorcycle is 自転車..wait that's bike.
🏴‍☠️ : What's a motorbike?
💎 : A motorcycle
🏴‍☠️ : Do you use the world autobike?
💎 : No, first time hearing it actually.
🌽 : Would they understand チャリ (also bicycle)
🏴‍☠️ : Why is it a Chari anyway? Because it makes the sound charin charin?
🌽 : Because it goes charin its a チャリンコ.    自転車、チャリ、チャリンコ  There's way too many terms for it in Japanese!
🏴‍☠️ : Overseas people are sure to be confused by this

Submission 7: Calpis (the yoghurt drink). When it is read out, Cow means Cow, and Pis means urine.
💎 : If you read Calpis like how you would read English it would be Caewl-pis, so it's easy to hear "Cow piss". In America and other countries Calpis has to change its name to Calpico to avoid this.
🏴‍☠️ : Why is it Calpis anyway, just because how it sounds?
🌽 : This may have happened before, when clueless foreign viewers listen to us say "I drank Calpis!" they may think we are drinking cow piss!
💎 : If you stick to the katakana reading then there's no problems. Just avoid the English reading
🏴‍☠️ : What's ゴキブリ in English
💎 : Cockroach, that was out of nowhere! It seems that this is originally "curaracha", a loan word from Mexican Spanish.
🏴‍☠️ : So cockroaches came from Mexico?
💎 : That is how the word came to be in English at least
