- Brought to you by One-who-gathers-money Shirakami Fubuki (doing a gaijin accent) and Knees-deep-in-loans Houshou Marine.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ: The way of speaking, just like an English native. You just speak all in Japanese though is that okay, at least throw in some English
- ๐ฝ : Very very nihongo
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Very very Japanese
- ๐ฝ : Japanese-go
- ๐ฝ : Today's introduction is sent in by nominorigohan. This is a reference to our Sukobucks (the stuff they get for playing games)
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I am certainly deep in debt (she is around -100 something as of present)
- ๐ฝ : It seems that we have a guest today
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : There's a reason we started off with the native accent, well, we can still talk with the guest today even without English smoothly.
- ๐ฝ : More like aren't you basically Japanese already?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ; She may even be better at Japanese than us. that person is coming to the studio today.
- ๐ฝ : We can already hear her laughing from here, that IRyS.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : But first of all, please use the hashtag #ใใใ ใฏ to tweet about this show! Sukoda is in hiragana and Wa is in Katakana!
- ๐ฝ : HOLOLIVE PRESENTS V NO CORNER SUKONDAWA
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Have a nice otakatsu week!
- -----------------------------------------------
- ๐ฝ : First of all, let us introduce today's guest! Hololive English Project Hope's IRyS!
- ๐ : Everyone sukondawa! IRyS here!
- ๐ฝ : She finally came over
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : This is my first time meeting her actually
- ๐ : This is my first time meeting both of you!
- ๐ฝ : The mood right now is just a confused mess of people meeting for the first time. I too only realized I met you for the first time today.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : This is the first time we three are doing something together, it is great that we have the opportunity to do a radio together. It this were a stream I would not know what to do together.
- ๐ : There's no opportunities to do a stream together with JPs after all
- -----------------------------------------------
- ๐ฝ : We have mutiple submissions from our viewers for you sent in, let's read some of them
- Letter 1: Sukondawa! IRyS, congrats on your 2.0 redesign! It retained the elements from 1.0 while improving the cuteness levels! Ever since debut you have always been good at Japanese , better than Miko even, I thought, shouldn't Miko be in EN and IRyS be in JP?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : A lot of people said that
- ๐ฝ : Better Japanese than Miko
- ๐ : No no no! it's just her pronunciation, like how she says "nye" a lot
- ๐ฝ : How can I put it, your Japanese is....Miko's is just mumbly
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Your Japanese is a lot clearer
- ๐ : But that is what makes Miko so cute
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Can I ask something real fast? In my songs there are parts with English lyrics and I have heard people saying that my pronunciation of them would be weird to native speakers. Is that true?
- ๐ฝ : As it it's katakana English?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : For example, in my newest song [I'm your Treasure Box] there is an English part in the middle. The person who wrote the song is from an English-speaking country (Toby Fox) so he taught me how I am supposed to pronounce each of the lines. Would someone from overseas be able to understand all of it?
- ๐ฝ : Let's sing it right now then
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : HELL NO??? I won't sing! It's so embarrassing! So how is it IRyS.
- ๐ : the bondage part was OK
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So it's a no then wwww
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So how is it actually supposed to sound? Can you sing it for us?
- ๐ : I will sing it...someday.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Please do! I want to hear how the English parts are actually supposed to sound like.
- ๐ : Actually, singing it with the Japanese pronunciation is great too.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I just want to hear how a native speaker would approach it
- ๐ : There are sounds a native speaker would omit entirely, so that is why it's different from the katakana reading.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : This is something I have been thinking about since I appeared on Gura's live. We sang Tricolore Airline, but the way Gura say Tricolore Airline is like Tricolore Airline, she doesn't say Air-ru-rian.
- ๐ : It's the syllables. What was it in Japanese again? Airline in Japanese is 5 syllables, while in English it's just two. So singing like a native speaker can mess up the intended syllable count in a Japanese song. When that happens it's better to sing according to the katakana reading
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : That was interesting...even though I was just reminded of it out of nowhere.
- ๐ : [Treasure Box] is also really popular overseas as well!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : It's shortened to [Treasure Box]?
- ๐ฝ : Tre, Trez...Chorizo?
- ๐ : That was the katakana reading actually
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So how is it pronounced normally?
- ๐ : I'm your Treasure Box
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So cool...
- ๐ฝ : What about you try saying that Marine?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I'm your Treasure Box
- ๐ : How can I put it...it's a bit weak w
- ๐ฝ : Put in some more confidence!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I'm your Treasure Hox!
- Letter 2: Sukondawa! This year and the next two, the stage has been set for yet another battle. Yes, next year's HoloFes ticket wars. There are 3 stages next year, and for the trios I am interested to see what the EN2 and ID2 can bring to the table!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I am curious to see what trios will be performing next year as well. Just what would you look like on the day, hmm?
- ๐ฝ : Oh yeah your Idol costume, hmm?
- ๐ : I wonder...
- ๐ฝ : Can overseas fans even participate in the live ticket lottery?
- ๐ : From what I have heard you cannot enter the lottery without a Japanese address
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So they can't come to the live show, only the livestream? Wait I have another question.
- ๐ฝ : Marine's "I have another question" series
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : We call it a "live" right, but do overseas people understand?
- ๐ : They do, but they would rather use the term "Concert" for it
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Just as I thought!
- ๐ฝ : When we hear concert we think of orchestra concertos
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : When I used to advertise my lives on foreign sites like Reddit I was worried if they would understand what I mean by live, so I looked it up and found out that concert is the word I should be using. But live work too?
- ๐ฝ : Music lives are concerts, but lives refer to livestreaming? Live story?
- ๐ : It's live stream
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I knew that, like haishin also means ้ (distribute) + ้ (delivery), so I write "stream".
- ๐ : Of course lives implies that it is a classical concert.
- Letter 3: Sukondawa! You are known for your singing voice but I would like to talk about your innuendos today. To the hosts of the show, what do you think about girls who like innuendos?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What is so excitable?
- ๐ : I wonder?
- ๐ฝ : We can censor it don't worry
- ๐ : Like innuendos?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ; Anything you remembered that got you really excited
- ๐ : If it's something recent then it's the tofu. I got a remodel right? And the breasts part now move a lot so when I stream I put the tofu on the table and chat would go "nice tofus" and "is that tofu on the table?". When I read SCs they would say Arigatofu.
- ๐ฝ : A bunch of old men!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : This is kinda creepy when you think about it
- ๐ : Don't call it creepy!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I like it, it's creepy but that is the good part
- ๐ฝ : Is the thing in front of you tofu too?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I don't think it's a tofu
- ๐ : Bigger than tofu?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What do you think my breasts it like IRyS?
- ๐ : How big are yours again Marine? Quite big? I guess it would be a Melon.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Should I stick to that, the melon appeal.
- ๐ : It's a bit hard though
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I want something softer but not like sagging soft.
- -----------------------------------------------
- IT'S LIKE THE KATAKANA....OR NOT?
- ๐ฝ : We have gathered katakana words commonly used in everyday life. Some of which are the words we think are English but is actually completely Japanese in origin, the so-called "Waseigo". This time we will be asking Hololive English's IRyS to look at some of these and tell us what she thinks of them.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I'm pretty curious about some of them, like "pet bottle"
- ๐ฝ : But pet bottle is a pet bottle
- ๐ : That makes zero sense in English
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ๐ฝ : WHAT????
- ๐ : Pet bottle....what do you mean by pet?
- ๐ฝ : Pet's bottle...I think I can see why
- ๐ : Have you ever questioned why it is called a PET bottle in the first place?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : No idea...I just buy them and call it a pet bottle
- ๐ : The PET refers to the material, plastic. We just call them plastic bottle, what is PET short for I wonder?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I learned something today
- ๐ฝ : it's written here P E T, what's PET?
- Submission 1: Marine's favorite food, Furaido Poteto. It would appear that this is actually a Waseigo. The correct name for it is "French Fries" in the US and "Chips" in the UK
- ( ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Don't mess around with me that is clearly not a chip) If you want to do Maringlish correctly what if you call it "French Fries"?
- ๐ฝ : So how do you pronounce it?
- ๐ : The way Marine said it just now is the correct one, French Fries
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : When I was attending an Eikaiwa course a long time ago they taught me how to pronounce Makkudonarudo the correct way and it was like McDo โคต๏ธ nards โคด๏ธ
- ๐ : Actually it's Mc' Do โคด๏ธ nalds, it's not McDonards
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : But that old man taught me that
- ๐ : Looks like he taught you the wrong pronunciation.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What about Cheesubaagaa?
- ๐ : Cheeseburgers
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ; Double Cheesubaagaa?
- ๐ : Double cheeseburgers
- ๐ฝ : So it's called chips in the UK?
- ๐ : That is the first time I heard about this actually, I think of chips as potato chips too.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What about Fish and Chips?
- ๐ : That is served with fries, huh
- Submission 2: Have you seen the word "Misin" (Sewing Machine) before? This is actually an exclusive Japanese word and it is called a "Sewing Machine" in English. The reason it became "Misin" is because when the sewing machine first made its way over Japanese people misunderstood the name.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Then were did the sewing went????
- ๐ : There are other machines other than this one too
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Perhaps the sewing machine was the first Misin to made its way here. Like "May I present you our Sewing Machine".
- ๐ : This makes no sense in English
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : But like will you ever get to use the word "Misin" when you are overseas?
- ๐ : Other than in sewing shops probably no
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ; There is a word, not toilet, but when you ask for directions the word in your head is different so it wouldn't go through. They don't understand "toilet"?
- ๐ : We do, but the way you say it like "Otoire" might makes it hard
- ๐ฝ : If I say "where toilet" would you understand?
- ๐ I do, restrooms are okay too but bathrooms are the most preferred
- ๐ฝ : Oh yeah houses overseas have the toilet and the bathroom all in one room!
- ๐ : All three are fine
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : But I don't take baths in a shop's toilet...how mysterious
- ๐ : I get confused by it sometimes
- Submission 3: I heard somewhere before the the term "parallel world" so popular in games and anime is a Waseigo. The meaning seems to get through but it seems that the term "parallel universe" is preferred
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What's a universe, a country?
- ๐ : To give an example...ummm...like that thing that is super popular right now...yeah that! That! The superhero universe thing
- ๐ฝ : Marvel?
- ๐ : All the shared universes, Metaverse too came from universe. So using "universe" is preferred over "world".
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What's the meaning of universe?
- ๐ : Many worlds all sharing the same space
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Hololive Universe?
- ๐ : The goal of HoloEarth is to become something like that
- ๐ฝ : What about our (Babacorn) song "Happiness World"? What would be the correct English rendering of it?
- ๐ : Well..if it's the correct English name the positions would change to "World Happiness". Happiness World means like a happy world. First time hearing the name Babacorn. When I was handed the script I was confused over who this "Babacorn" is supposed to be.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : See? No one knows it! Babacorn is the unit composed of me and Fubuki. Now IRyS, why do you think it's named that?
- ๐ : Senchou's Baba...
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Zero hesitation
- ๐ : Not like that! And Kitsune's Corn
- ๐ฝ : Do overseas people understand "Baba"?
- ๐ : That's just Japanese , no. It came from obaasan right?
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Obaasan's baa.
- ๐ฝ : When overseas people say "KONO BABA!!!" how do they say it?
- ๐ : if it's the same mood then...I wonder...a word that disses an older woman's age...
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Grand baba?
- ๐ : Normally speaking we use "Grandmother", but that implies that you are close to the person so [censored] and [censored] and [censored] is used. (I assume Old fucker). I don't use such rough words, no, IRyS does not know anything about those at all โจ
- ๐ฝ : I see, Japanese is quite complex after all.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : In [Your Name] when Mitsuha and Taki first switch bodies there was a scene when they were confused over which pronoun to use (ore, watashi, boku). How is that scene translated in English-speaking countries? Just "me"?
- ๐ : We don't have those in English. Actually, I am not sure though as I haven't seen the English dub for it.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : From what I saw it's just a bunch of me's so I think it would be a weird scene overseas.
- ๐ : That is what makes Japanese unique
- Submission 4: We think of them as the katakana version of an English word, but there are a lot of merchandise names that makes zero sense in English. For example, clear files. It is called a plastic document folder in English. My overseas Otaku friends have no idea what a clear file is so I looked it up.
- ๐ : There are a lot of words like that, but plastic document folder is a bit long. We would just call it "plastic folder" or just "folder". The document part is omitted because naturally a folder would carry a document.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Then what does "clear file" mean?
- ๐ : What is a file even? When you say file we think about the digital file. If you explain it to me I think I will get it., but like "can you pass me the clear file?", what is the clear file? Just call it folder.
- ๐ฝ : Hololive holders?
- ๐ : Probably better to call them Hololive character folders, we are characters after all
- ๐ฝ : Wait...Plastic Document Folder....PDFs?????
- ๐ : Is that so??? What does plastic have to do with it??? It's digital
- ๐ฝ : I wonder..probably Document something something
- Submission 5: I want to hear what IRyS makes of this word. Notopasokon (notebook)
- ๐ : I don't understand!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Why so?
- ๐ : When you say notopasokon I think about the nooto part, the notebok. Pasokon is also Japanese, it's computer in English.
- ๐ฝ : it's from Personal Computer.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ; So it's a shorthand?
- ๐ : Japanese does this a lot
- ๐ฝ : Conbini is also that.
- ๐ : So Pasokon would also confuse me
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : I think it's just because we cannot pronounce the original word. Like convenience store? That is way too long, conbini is good enough.
- ๐ : In English there are a lot of words. Now Twitter has a different way of counting the letters, but before when Japanese and English has the same cap it was difficult to tweet. anything in English because you can't shorten it with kanji. Now a letter in English counts as 0.5 Japanese letters. It's going to be long no matter what
- ๐ฝ : What is Notopasokon in English?
- ๐ : Laptop, a computer that you can use on "top" of your "lap". We omit the computer part. "Laptop" is enough
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So cool
- ๐ฝ : Pet bottles too...this is hard. I got laptop remembered.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Eikaiwa lesson
- ๐ : You guys don't use a laptop for streaming right? They are not strong enough so we use a..
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ ; DESKTOP! This is pretty intuitive.
- ๐ฝ : You would use a laptop for watching anime
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Isn't that pretty smart ๏ผใคใณใใช๏ผ? Like remembering that laptop = anime
- ๐ : Use a laptop at ในใฟใ (Starbucks)
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Guess I would use a laptop there. let's use this
- Submission 6: Bike, in Japan we use the term "bike" for motorcycles, but it seems like overseas bikes just refer to bicycles. They seem to use the term "autobikes" over there
- ๐ : We just call them "motorcycles", we don't use autobikes. Bikes are ่ช่ปข่ป. We understand "bicycle".
- ๐ฝ : Motorcycle is ่ช่ปข่ป..wait that's bike.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What's a motorbike?
- ๐ : A motorcycle
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Do you use the world autobike?
- ๐ : No, first time hearing it actually.
- ๐ฝ : Would they understand ใใฃใช (also bicycle)
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Why is it a Chari anyway? Because it makes the sound charin charin?
- ๐ฝ : Because it goes charin its a ใใฃใชใณใณ. ่ช่ปข่ปใใใฃใชใใใฃใชใณใณ There's way too many terms for it in Japanese!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Overseas people are sure to be confused by this
- Submission 7: Calpis (the yoghurt drink). When it is read out, Cow means Cow, and Pis means urine.
- ๐ : If you read Calpis like how you would read English it would be Caewl-pis, so it's easy to hear "Cow piss". In America and other countries Calpis has to change its name to Calpico to avoid this.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Why is it Calpis anyway, just because how it sounds?
- ๐ฝ : This may have happened before, when clueless foreign viewers listen to us say "I drank Calpis!" they may think we are drinking cow piss!
- ๐ : If you stick to the katakana reading then there's no problems. Just avoid the English reading
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : What's ใดใญใใช in English
- ๐ : Cockroach, that was out of nowhere! It seems that this is originally "curaracha", a loan word from Mexican Spanish.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : So cockroaches came from Mexico?
- ๐ : That is how the word came to be in English at least
- -----------------------------------------------------

- ๐ฝ : Can you say it?
- ๐ : (fumbles it)
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Is it because it's written in Katakana so it's hard to read?
- ๐ฝ : What about the email?
- ๐ : [email protected]
- ๐ฝ : The "rr" in radio!
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : We sound like a real radio all of a sudden. Like normally when they start a radio they would introduce it in English right? Just like that
- ๐ฝ : This has been the first half of the guest episode with IRyS, she will also be here next time. How was it IRyS?
- ๐ : It was really smooth and you guys run the show so smoothly! It is my first time doing a radio in-person so I was worried if I can say anything at all
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : You talked plenty!
- ๐ : Thank you so much, really. You two, how can I put it, are very amiable and are really easy to talk to. Well, when you guys are serious (ใใธใฌใน) at least. The times you are messing around like the bad English stuff let's just forget those and stick to katakana reading.
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Did you not understand what we are saying?
- ๐ : it's just cringey
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : Trying too hard to pronounce like those tryhard middle schoolers reading English in class cringey?
- ๐ฝ : So it's like that...next episode will be more normal
- ๐ดโโ ๏ธ : "My radio this is radio is every wednesday next stream radio is ๅไบๆ depcepber december two one twenty-one wednesday morning am afternoon tea"
