  1. Jenny couldn't hear her sister walk into the apartment over the sound of the TV. Or maybe she was too enamored with the sight of Elmo on the flat screen, or the taste of the sippy cup of juice in her mouth, or the way she was laying on her stomach on the floor.
  2.
  3. However, when Jenny heard the door shut, she shot up like a rocket.
  4.
  5. "Jesus Christ," May said, storming off.
  6.
  7. "What? I didn't think you were going to be home so early..." Jenny said, standing awkwardly in her diaper and t-shirt, sippy cup rolling on the carpet, speaking over the Saturday morning Sesame Street.
  8.
  9. "It's not that you're wearing... that" May said, "It's that I'm here busting my ass getting groceries and you're dressed and acting like you don't even need to memorize your times tables."
  10.
  11. Jenny shuffled awkwardly, the cheap diaper sagging on her hips.
  12.
  13. May began to pull groceries out of the bags, eventually she looked up to see Jenny still standing awkwardly.
  14.
  15. "Go put some pants on," she said, sighing, "and start looking for work, like I told you to last night. You could at least be trying for financial independence while you're literally pissing mom's money away."
  16.
  17. Jenny sighed angrily and stormed off to her room. She quickly put on shoes, panties in the place of a diaper, and pants. She pocketed her wallet and phone.
  18.
  19. As Jenny stomped by May, she said "I'm going to the bookstore on 7th street," without pausing for a response. Suddenly she stopped and saw the entire pack of diapers she had bought yesterday in the trash. May noticed.
  20.
  21. "Yeah, and don't go buying any more while you're out."
  22.
  23. "You can't control me," Jenny said, furious.
  24.
  25. "I can control this house!" May said, raising her voice, "I pay the rent, so if I catch you bringing diapers in this apartment, you'll be sleeping on the streets tonight!"
  26.
  27. Jenny hurried out the door, slamming it and shoving her hands into her pockets. She walked sullenly down the stairs and into the crowd on the street. She walked with her head down, turning at the next street into one that is less crowded, darker and more dismal. Finally she walked into an unassuming second-hand book store. The man running the register smiled at her, and she smiled back.
  28.
  29. She perused the shelves for a while, answering trite questions that the cashier was throwing her way. There were no others in the bookstore, and so Jenny enjoyed the company and the relative peace.
  30.
  31. Eventually the topic turned from Jenny's life to the books in the bookstore.
  32.
  33. "Are there any older books than these?" Jenny said in a rather disappointed tone, while holding up a stack of "Star Wars" books.
  34.
  35. "Well," the man said, "there is one, and I think you'll enjoy it! Pops told me to give this one to someone trustworthy, so I think you fit the bill," The man took out a dusty old tome from under the counter. It seemed interesting, so Jenny bought it and left the store for home. As she was walking back she stood at the door to the pharmacy, contemplating going in and buying another pack of diapers, but instead she just kept heading home.
