  1. 'Sire,' said the maiden, 'when the boy's father had spoken thus, they returned home together. And as soon as morning broke the next day the boy rose, and hearing the birds singing he decided to go off to find sport in the forest, because it was such a beautiful day. He mounted one of his father's hunting-horses and rode away into the forest, carrying his javelins like a Welshman. He came upon a stag and chased it at least four leagues until he found himself in a clearing where two knights in armour were fighting. One of them carried a red shield and the other a white. The boy abandoned his chase of the stag to watch the combat, and seeing the Red Knight overcoming the White, he hurled one of his javelins at the Red Knight with such strength that it pierced his hauberk and plunged through his body, and the knight fell dead. And sire,' said the maiden, 'the White Knight rejoiced much at this, and asked the boy if he always killed knights with such ease.
