  2. Kanagi: Bwahahaha! At last, it's come!
  3. Kanagi: It's the time of the deceased, when the sun has set and the stars are dancing in the sky...
  4. Kanagi: ...Yes, it's night!!
  5. Kanagi: Now, I shall act to fulfill vampirekind's greatest desire...
  6. Kanagi: And paint this town with death's colors!!
  7. Kanagi: "Bloody Ruler"...
  8. Momoko's Voice: Hold it right there!
  9. Kanagi: Hm?!
  10. Momoko: You’ve shown your face here yet again! Vampire, Ruler of the Dead!
  11. Kanagi: Sister Momoko!! You again, knave?!
  12. Karin: "Okay! Enough for now!"
  13. Karin: You two were brilliant!
  14. Karin: It's ten times cooler than I imagined!
  15. Karin: You're a perfect fit for your roles!
  16. Mitama: Compared to your first rehearsal, you've improved by an incredible degree since then.
  17. Momoko: Ahaha, must be 'cuz the script is completely drilled into my head by now!
  18. Kanagi: When I got invited to participate in rehearsals...
  19. Kanagi: For a Halloween party stage play...
  20. Kanagi: It took me aback for a moment, but...
  21. Kanagi: I want to help make this a festive occasion for everybody much like you all, so I couldn't refuse.
  22. Momoko: True, everybody is putting their all for this party.
  23. Karin: I'm counting on you all!
  24. Mitama: In that case, seeing as everybody is present right now...
  25. Mitama: How about a run-through of the entire play?
  26. Karin: That sounds good!
  27. Momoko: Hm, I'm not too sure...
  28. Kanagi: I support this idea.
  29. Kanagi: Acting out the whole thing might let us see which parts are lacking.
  30. Momoko: Well, if you say so... 'fraid I might drop the ball here or there, though...
  31. Karin: Even if you mess up. don't sweat it!
  32. Karin: Okay, as soon as you're ready...
  33. Karin: From the beginning and until the final battle scene.
  34. Karin: Let's start!
  35. Momoko: This strength isn't mine alone!
  36. Momoko: This is the determination of all the people you terrorized given form!!
  37. Momoko: Eat this!!!
  38. Kanagi: Guh...! This cannot be...
  39. Kanagi: Arghhhhh!!!
  40. Mitama: "And so, peace returned to the city."
  41. Mitama: "Thank you, Sister Momoko!"
  42. Mitama: "Long live Sister Momoko!"
  43. Karin: "Okay, let's stop here!..."
  44. Kanagi: Phew...
  45. Momoko: Man, practicing the whole play at once is no joke. I'm pooped...
  46. Kanagi: The final act is heavy on action so there is the need to manage stamina wisely, too...
  47. Mitama: You've all done splendidly, so the hard work paid off, I say!
  48. Kanagi: Thanks. Your words certainly help boost confidence.
  49. Kanagi: How did we do, Artist?
  50. Karin: Well...
  51. Kanagi: Yes?
  52. Karin: How should I put it... Something feels off...
  53. Kanagi: Of course a trained eye like Artist's wouldn't let any flaws go unnoticed, huh.
  54. Momoko: Improving our performance is, like, the whole point of practice. Go on and give it to us straight!
  55. Karin: D-don't get me wrong, guys! You all were super awesome during the practice!
  56. Karin: ...I think my own script is to be blamed here...
  57.
  58. FILENAME: text_311161-2.txt
  59. Kanagi: Hm. To sum it up, you aren't satisfied with your own script?
  60. Karin: That’s right...
  61. Karin: I thought my script had turned out well when I finished it...
  62. Karin: But now that I've watched the run-through, it no longer feels right...
  63. Momoko: Well, checking if everything comes together nicely is what full rehearsals are meant for and all.
  64. Mitama: Can you pinpoint the exact moment something felt amiss to you?
  65. Karin: It was the last scene...
  66. Karin: When the vampire, boiling with rage, fought the deciding battle with the sister...
  67. Karin: That's when something started bothering me a little.
  68. Karin: Whether it was the build up that led to that scene, or the lines themselves, I don't really know...
  69. Kanagi: Why, isn't that the centerpiece of the story?
  70. Karin: It is...
  71. Momoko: So there's a problem with such an important scene...
  72. Momoko: I'd really like to help you figure it out, but...
  73. Kanagi: It's unfortunate, but we're complete amateurs when it comes to scenario writing.
  74. Momoko: Yeah, wouldn't want to throw you off even more with some useless advice.
  75. Momoko: I didn't feel particularly bothered at any point while practicing either.
  76. Kanagi: Maybe it's something that only an artist would be able to notice...
  77. Karin: Maybe...
  78. Momoko: Either way, you can relax, Karin.
  79. Momoko: If it's just a couple changes to the last scene, we can handle it no problem!
  80. Kanagi: Indeed, we actors shall back you up with our acting however we can.
  81. Kanagi: Feel free to contemplate the issue until the deadline.
  82. Karin: You guys...! Yeah, I'm going to give it my all.
  83. Kanagi: In conclusion, the best thing for us to do right now is to keep practicing.
  84. Momoko: True.
  85. Kanagi: Rewatching the play might give Artist a clue in regards to adjusting the script.
  86. Momoko: Makes sense. Let's not delay it any further and resume our practice right away then!
  87. Karin: Please start from the fight scene in the middle act.
  88. Kanagi: That would mean we need to start from the...
  89. Kanagi: "Bwahahaha... I've been waiting for you, Sister!"
  90. Kanagi: Line in the script, correct?
  91. Karin: Yup!
  92. Karin: "Start!"
  93. Kanagi: Ahahahaha... Hahahaha...
  94. Kanagi: Ahahahahahaha!!!!
  95. Kanagi: I've been waiting for far, far too long!!
  96. Kanagi: Sister!! My mortal enemy!
  97. Karin: "Stop, stop, stooop!"
  98. Karin: Um... Well... Your delivery is too exaggerated all of a sudden...
  99. Karin: W-what's going on...?
  100. Kanagi: Oh? The dialogue made you feel like something was out of place, so...
  101. Kanagi: I thought that changing my acting might make it feel right...
  102. Karin: You did it for my sake, then!
  103. Karin: Thank you!
  104. Karin: Your acting has been 100% on point so far, really...
  105. Karin: But that felt a little OOC to me just now...
  106. Kanagi: I see. So that was unnecessary...
  107. Kanagi: By the way, Artist... What did you mean when you said it was "OOC"?
  108. Karin: It's, uh, how should I explain it...
  109. Mitama: It's an acronym for "out of character..." Meaning you weren't quite acting in the way the character would...I believe?
  110. Karin: That's more or less what I meant.
  111. Karin: Aha!
  112. Mitama: Did you figure something out?
  113. Karin: That must be it!
  114. Karin: I've been misinterpreting the vampire's personality all along!
  115. Kanagi: So it's your misunderstanding, then...?
  116.
  117. FILENAME: text_311161-3.txt
  118. Momoko: So you didn't understand the vampire correctly, then...
  119. Momoko: But how is it possible for the author to misunderstand their own character's personality?
  120. Karin: To be exact, I didn't write this character from scratch...
  121. Karin: She's based on an already existing character...
  122. Karin: This vampire originally appears in "Magical Kirin".
  123. Mitama: "Magical Kirin"...
  124. Mitama: Unless my memory is betraying me, that is the name of your favorite shoujo manga, yes?
  125. Kanagi: Handling another author's characters must be a complicated matter.
  126. Mitama: Basically, this play is a story you created...
  127. Mitama: But you took that character from another work?
  128. Kanagi: Many of my masters at work also like those so called "derivative works."
  129. Karin: Yup, exactly.
  130. Karin: "If it were up to the vampire from "Kirin," how would she react in this or that scene..."
  131. Karin: That's been my thinking process for writing her lines.
  132. Momoko: And that's why the dialogue didn't sit right with you in parts, then.
  133. Momoko: Since you wouldn't stop worrying whether your writing was true to the source material.
  134. Karin: This vampire is evil by nature, but also kind of enigmatic and has fun at the same time...
  135. Karin: I was unsure if those traits could be preserved in the stage play...
  136. Karin: But Nagitan proved my worries unfounded.
  137. Karin: Her take on the vampire matched the vision I had perfectly!
  138. Karin: You really understand "Magical Kirin," Nagitan!
  139. Karin: So you don't need to go out of your way to change your acting!
  140. Kanagi: I see.
  141. Kanagi: Certainly, it looks like my laugh back then was overdoing it.
  142. Kanagi: But as to whether I understand Magical Kirin, though...
  143. Kanagi: Let's see... I'm not that far into the manga yet...
  144. Kanagi: At least, I'm pretty sure I've yet to get to any chapters with a vampire in it.
  145. Karin: That's catastrophical! I'll lend my volumes to you, so get on reading it! Right! Away!
  146. Kanagi: Doing that would help me understand the character I'm playing even better, yes?
  147. Karin: No, that isn't why!
  148. Karin: You simply cannot call your life complete until you’ve read that part!
  149. Momoko: Oh, you're just fangirling...
  150.
  151. FILENAME: text_311161-4.txt
  152. Kanagi: (Not long after, I took the whole set of "Kirin" volumes that featured the vampire home with me...)
  153. Kanagi: (And read it all.)
  154. Kanagi: (Sure enough, the manga story differed from that of the stage play.)
  155. Kanagi: (Let's go over the contents once more to sort them out.)
  156. Kanagi: The vampire arc starts with Phantom Thief Kirin arriving in a certain town.
  157. Kanagi: On the outskirts of that town stood a castle inhabited by a vampire.
  158. Kanagi: The vampires and the townsfolk waged a long-running feud that smouldered on for many, many years... Or so the manga tells us.
  159. Kanagi: Our heroine, Kirin, hears word of a certain treasure from the townsfolk. While originally theirs, it was taken by the vampire long ago. That treasure seems to be the main subject of the story.
  160. Kanagi: The phantom thief confronts the vampire, wins an epic standoff, and returns the treasure back to the town.
  161. Kanagi: But this tale doesn't end there.
  162. Kanagi: The vampire's powers weaken drastically after she loses the treasure.
  163. Kanagi: The last chapter reveals that the townsfolk take advantage of the vampire's weakened state to advance on the castle and strike her down.
  164. Kanagi: The townsfolk end up vanquishing the vampire without Kirin's assistance, and peace comes back to the town once more.
  165. Kanagi: And they all lived happily ever after... The end.
  166. Kanagi: (A happy ending...)
  167. Kanagi: (Yes, an unmistakable happy ending...)
  168. Kanagi: (And yet, why does it make me feel so...)
  169. Kanagi's Brother: Wow, you're reading manga for girls, Sis? That's not something you see everyday.
  170. Kanagi: I *am* a girl too, you know.
  171. Kanagi's Brother: It's drawn so cutely, too. Is it interesting?
  172. Kanagi's Brother: Let me read it for a sec...
  173. Kanagi: Hold it!
  174. Kanagi's Brother: Huh?
  175. Kanagi: Ah... Well, the thing is...
  176. Kanagi: The person I got this manga from loves it to death.
  177. Kanagi: She lent it to me after strongly insisting I read it.
  178. Kanagi: I'm not going to take the blame if someone other than me damages it...
  179. Kanagi's Brother: I see. Makes sense, I guess.
  180. Kanagi: (No...! This isn’t really why I can’t lend it to him...!)
  181. Kanagi: (In actuality, I don't want my brother to read this vampire arc...!)
  182. Kanagi: (He would only feel empty upon finishing it...)
  183. Kanagi: (Yes, emptiness was the only thing that filled my heart after I was done with this arc.)
  184. Kanagi: (Was it because I perform as the vampire in the play...?)
  185. Kanagi: (Or, perhaps...?)
  186. Kanagi: ...What do I make of this outcome...
  187. Kanagi: It appears the Day of the Dead has taken a liking to throwing me one riddle after another...
  188. Kanagi: Quite the deceptive fellow, that vampire...
  189.

  191. <The day of the Halloween party>
  192. Kanagi: The party is finally about to start...
  193. Mitama: Yes, at last.
  194. Kanagi: Togame... Are you in good health? No injuries or anything?
  195. Momoko: Yeah, I'm feeling great. No pain or anything.
  196. Kanagi: Well, that's a load off my mind.
  197. Kanagi: After that whole mess at rehearsal the other day...
  198. Kanagi: I won't try to earn forgiveness with this, but...
  199. Kanagi: I'll put my best efforts to make our guests hospitable, as one of the hosts for this party.
  200. Mitama: While you shouldn't let that incident get you down too much, Kanagi...
  201. Mitama: I'm a little excited at the prospect of watching you serve everyone!
  202. Kanagi: It might tank the fearsome reputation of the vampire, but...
  203. Kanagi: I'm going to combine it with the "maid" aspect that I've become familiar with...
  204. Kanagi: And attempt to create a new combination, the "vampire maid."
  205. Mitama: I can only hope nothing goes wrong~
  206. Kanagi: By the way...
  207. Karin: ...
  208. Momoko: H-how's it going...? Nevermind, that face makes it obvious...
  209. Karin: I'm really sorry, guys...
  210. Karin: I spent so much time trying to fix the last scene...
  211. Karin: But I haven't come up with anything good yet...
  212. Kanagi: I see...
  213. Karin: B-but that doesn't mean I'm calling off our stage play!
  214. Karin: People are waiting for it, and...
  215. Karin: Making the best of the time you've got is the way of a pro!
  216. Karin: Only an amateur would give up halfway just because they couldn't fix some minor issue in time!
  217. Kanagi: ...Well spoken, Artist!
  218. Mitama: Showing your work to an audience despite not being personally happy with it...
  219. Mitama: I think anyone would say that's a very brave thing to do.
  220. Karin: And I'm very confident in your acting ability!
  221. Karin: Even if a few lines feel a little off to me, I'm totally sure people will enjoy the play!
  222. Momoko: Karin...
  223. Momoko: Okay, we got you covered! We'll definitely knock the cover off the ball!
  224. Kanagi: ...
  225. Kanagi: (We need to put on as good a play as we can, even if there might be flaws...)
  226. Kanagi: (But first things first.)
  227. Kanagi: (Right now, I must focus on serving our party guests...!)
  228.
  229. FILENAME: text_311162-2.txt
  230. Emiri: Omigosh! There's, like, so much sweet stuff in here!
  231. Sasara: Yeah? But we're at Coordinator's place right now, so, you know...
  232. Mitama: *Giggle*
  233. Mitama: My own cooking is randomly mixed in with other food~
  234. Asuka: And so commences the Russian Roulette nobody signed up for...!
  235. Kanagi: Our guests seem to be having a pleasant time.
  236. Kanagi: Making sure they're satisfied keeps me that much more busy, but it's a good feeling still.
  237. Konomi's Voice: Nagitaaan!
  238. Kanagi: Hm?
  239. Kanagi: Oh, it's you, Haruna.
  240. Konomi: Why are you dressed in this outfit, if I might ask?
  241. Kanagi: Well, it's for a play I'll be performing in soon.
  242. Kanagi: May as well have it on for the party too...
  243. Kanagi: Since there won't be many opportunities to show it off later.
  244. Konomi: Oh, you must be talking about the play Kako will also be acting in.
  245. Kako: I...I only play a supporting role and don't have many lines myself, though...
  246. Nanaka: *Giggle* Please do your best on the stage.
  247. Meiyui: Is it horror? Need a person to play the jiangshi part?
  248. Kanagi: A jiangshi would be out of place in a play with a Western setting, I'm afraid.
  249. Kanagi: The play itself is about a confrontation between a vampire and a sister.
  250. Akira: Vampires are neat.
  251. Akira: A cool vampire costume is what I'd go with if I had to choose one for myself!
  252. Nanaka: Oh my, is that so?
  253. Akira: Huh?!
  254. Nanaka: And here I was so certain that you had a soft spot for frilly, charming outfits, Akira...
  255. Akira: Ahaha, no way!
  256. Akira: Yeah, absolutely, definitely no way!
  257. Kanagi: Now then, I have food to take to other guests and other business to attend to.
  258. Kanagi: Please let me excuse myself for the time being.
  259. Konomi: Okay! Please take care.
  260. Kanagi: Would you like me to refill your drinks?
  261. Leila: Hey! It's Kanagi!
  262. Mito: In a vampire outfit!
  263. Seika: Yes, please, if you would.
  264. Kanagi: Understood.
  265. Leila: ...
  266. Kanagi: Hm? Is something wrong?
  267. Leila: Well, having a vampire serve you food at a party is sort of...
  268. Mito: Bizarre!
  269. Kanagi: Vampires are generally depicted as masters of either castles or mansions, yes.
  270. Kanagi: That's why a vampire in the position of a servant might...
  271. Kanagi: Feel out of place for you and your friends, Ibuki.
  272. Kanagi: Rest assured, though: my current identity is not that of an ordinary vampire...
  273. Kanagi: Today, I'm serving guests as a "maid vampire"!
  274. Seika: Ooh~
  275. Leila: How is that different from your usual maid Nagitan persona, I wonder~?
  276. Mito: Let's take a picture together then, maid vampire! An instant one!
  277. Kanagi: My apologies.
  278. Kanagi: Cameras can't capture vampires, so it isn't possible to take one.
  279. Seika: So the only difference is that her service has gotten worse...?
  280. Mito: A-all right, let's ask for an omurice, then.
  281. Leila: The most classic dish when it comes to maids, of course...
  282. Kanagi: I assume you'd like me to add a ketchup drawing, then. Piece of cake.
  283. Seika: What would a vampire draw?
  284. Mito: A cute little bat, maybe?
  285. Kanagi: Your drawing is complete...!
  286. Mito: W-what is this supposed to be...?
  287. Kanagi: What you'd expect a vampire to draw using ketchup...
  288. Kanagi: Blood.
  289. Leila: Eep?!
  290. Seika: This maid vampire is quite a character.
  291. Leila: Maybe too much of a character compared to the normal idea people have of cruel vampires.
  292. Kanagi: ...?!
  293. Kanagi: ...
  294. Kanagi: (The idea of...what vampires are supposed to be like...?)
  295. Kanagi: (In other words, a preconceived notion...)
  296.
  297. FILENAME: text_311162-3.txt
  298. Touka's Voice: Hey, miss vampire maid~
  299. Kanagi: Hm?
  300. Touka: Our table is all out of sweets~
  301. Ui: Ehehe~ Trick or treat!
  302. Kanagi: Very well. I'll get on it right away.
  303. Kanagi: I'm curious to learn what tricks you might have in store, Ui...
  304. Kanagi: But I shall ignore your proposition for now.
  305. Nemu: So this is the military-style maid there's been so much fuss about.
  306. Touka: If that's the concept, it seems a bit chaotic, doesn't it?
  307. Kanagi: Thank you for the wait.
  308. Ui: That took no time at all!
  309. Kanagi: I simply borrowed sweets from other tables, that's all.
  310. Kanagi: Go on and choose whichever delicacies suit your fancy, now.
  311. Ui: ...
  312. Kanagi: Hm, is there something else you want? You're staring at me so intently...
  313. Ui: Ah, not really...
  314. Ui: Now that I got to see it up close, it’s incredible...
  315. Ui: So much that it shocked me for a second...
  316. Kanagi: Are you referring to my outfit...?
  317. Kanagi: That Yakumo really might've put too much enthusiasm into designing it.
  318. Kanagi: Accounting for the need to stand out on stage even when viewed from afar may have backfired.
  319. Nemu: This outfit looks very realistic and skillfully crafted. I must admit as much.
  320. Kanagi: But if it stands in the way of enjoying the party...
  321. Kanagi: That settles it. Let me go get myself changed this instant...
  322. Ui: Hey, hold on, please! It's fine.
  323. Ui: Your outfit shocked me for a second, sure...
  324. Ui: But I don't feel intimidated at all because I know that it's you under the costume, Kanagi.
  325. Kanagi: What you're saying is...
  326. Kanagi: You already recognize me and can keep your composure because of that.
  327. Ui: Yep!
  328. Ui: It'd be a different story if I ran into some stranger wearing this costume on the street.
  329. Ui: That might have actually scared me.
  330. Ui: There's no reason to be afraid of you, because we're friends.
  331. Touka: Nothing wrong with this outfit, really~
  332. Nemu: A person's inner nature is what truly invokes fear in us.
  333. Nemu: Conversely, no matter how much a person's outward appearance might clash with their kind personality...
  334. Nemu: So long as you are aware of their true character, you won't be taken by terror.
  335. Ui: Maybe a real vampire wouldn't be scary to talk to either, if we ever met one!
  336. Kanagi: ...Hrmm. I see your point. I shall stay dressed like this, then.
  337. Touka: Ui is such a baby, all things considered~
  338. Ui: Huh?
  339. Touka: Regardless of how nice or evil any vampire might be...
  340. Touka: There's no reason to be afraid of them in the first place.
  341. Nemu: Why is that?
  342. Touka: Come on~ Vampires have as many weaknesses as there are stars in the sky, don’t they~?
  343. Nemu: That's true, now that you mention it.
  344. Ui: Yeah, vampires have plenty of easily exploitable weaknesses.
  345. Touka: Exactly!
  346. Touka: Let me say it again.
  347. Touka: There's nothing scary about creatures as critically vulnerable as vampires!
  348. Kanagi: ...
  349. Kanagi: BOO!!!!
  350. Touka: ...?!
  351. Touka: W-what was that?
  352. Kanagi: I just decided to get a little angry on behalf of the vampires whose pride is being injured.
  353. Touka: Geeezzz~!!
  354. Kanagi: M-my apologies. Making you upset wasn't my intention...
  355. Kanagi: ―Kanagi― And this is the proof. Do forgive me.
  356. Touka: ―Touka― Huh, what is this supposed to be...?
  357. Kanagi: ―Kanagi― This is my expression of love given to Satomi to cancel out the distress I caused.
  358. Touka: ―Touka― Hmm, you know, this makes me feel more disgust than anything...
  359. Ui: ―Ui― Touka, please! K-Kanagi looks very cute in this pose, if you ask me.
  360. Nemu: ―Nemu― I second that sentiment.
  361. Nemu: ―Nemu― If anything, we might have just witnessed an especially rare sight.
  362. Touka: ―Touka― ...!
  363.

  365. Kanagi: Well then, I have other things to attend to, so if you'll excuse me.
  366. Ui: Sure!
  367. Kanagi: Hm...
  368. Kanagi: (What is this, though...)
  369. Kanagi: (That round of jesting exchanges with the gremlin trio earlier...)
  370. Kanagi: (None of it was meant to be serious, and yet...)
  371. Kanagi: (It brought out a familiar sense of inner discomfort...)
  372. Kanagi: ...?!
  373. Kanagi: I-I get it now...!
  374. Momoko: It's almost time for the stage play.
  375. Karin: Yeah...
  376. Mitama: Let's get moving to the stage hall then, shall we?
  377. Kanagi: Artist! Togame!
  378. Momoko: Whoa there! What's the emergency, Kanagi?
  379. Kanagi: It might be finally in my grasp! The proper way to handle that vampire's characterization!
  380. Karin: Wha?!
  381. Mitama: Do you mean it?!
  382. Kanagi: You bet!
  383. Karin: If you're able to make the vampire true to her original character...
  384. Karin: It will definitely improve the last scene!
  385. Karin: The characterization you have in mind... Please tell me all about it.
  386. Kanagi: But of course.
  387. Kanagi: First, vampires...
  388. Leila: Maybe too much of a character compared to the normal idea people have of cruel vampires.
  389. Kanagi: Have a reputation for being scary, as per those words.
  390. Kanagi: And I used to think that vampires must be scary, too, because that idea is so prevailingly common.
  391. Momoko: "Used to"?
  392. Kanagi: The brat trio did some nitpicking before...
  393. Touka: There's nothing scary about creatures as critically vulnerable as vampires!
  394. Kanagi: Vampires don't pose enough of a threat to be feared due to their many weaknesses, they said.
  395. Mitama: I haven't considered it before, but now that I think about it, that's true.
  396. Karin: But why do we tend to assume that vampires are scary, then?
  397. Kanagi: The blame lies with the vicious cycle of ideas... preconceived notions, wouldn't you agree?
  398. Ui: Maybe a real vampire wouldn't be scary to talk to either, if we ever met one!
  399. Kanagi: The idea that vampires are "scary" continuously perpetuates itself, amplifying itself further.
  400. Kanagi: It's a vicious cycle.
  401. Kanagi: Humans gave up on trying to understand them, and, consequently, became even more afraid.
  402. Kanagi: And thus created the vampires as we know them today...
  403. Kanagi: That may be what the vampire arc in "Kirin" was aiming for, too.
  404. Karin: The manga didn't show us the vampire's point of view at all, if I recall right.
  405. Kanagi: Because by learning about how a character thinks and feels...
  406. Karin: The reader loses their fear of them...?
  407. Kanagi: Yes, that's what I’m getting at.
  408. Momoko: That being said, um...what's the right way to portray the vampire, then?
  409. Kanagi: Let me confirm something first.
  410. Kanagi: How did the end of the vampire arc in "Kirin" make you feel, Artist?
  411. Karin: Um, it felt like a happy ending with the peace restored to town, I guess...
  412. Kanagi: Hm, I see...
  413. Kanagi: As for me, it left me feeling with nothing but void in my chest...
  414. Karin: Huh...?
  415. Kanagi: That confirms it.
  416. Kanagi: That confirms it. Taking into account the previously discussed factors...
  417. Kanagi: The vampire's proper characterization... Their "true identity" is apparent to me now.
  418. Kanagi: The vampire's proper characterization is...
  419. Kanagi: ...You already recognize me and can therefore keep your composure.
  420. Ui: Yep!
  421. Kanagi: Good! Things somehow got resolved in time for the stage play...!
  422.
  423. FILENAME: text_311163-1.txt
  424. Ui: I can't wait to see Kanagi perform on stage along with everyone!
  425. Touka: At any rate...I'm impressed they were able to prepare an entire assembly hall to perform in.
  426. Ui: Karin's grandma is letting them borrow this place.
  427. Ui: I heard she got the reservation for it from a children organization’s meeting.
  428. Touka: That explains the unfamiliar kids in the crowd.
  429. Nemu: It's just as they say, "your network is your net worth".
  430. *Beeeep*
  431. Ui: Ah, looks like it's starting!
  432. Kanagi: Bwahahaha! At last, it's come!
  433. Kanagi: It's the time of the deceased, when the sun has set and the stars are dancing in the sky...
  434. Kanagi: ...Yes, it's night!!
  435. Kanagi: Now, I shall act to fulfill vampirekind's greatest desire...
  436. Kanagi: And paint this town with death's colors!!
  437. Kanagi: "Bloody Ruler"...
  438. Momoko's Voice: Hold it right there!
  439. Kanagi: Hm?!
  440. Momoko: You’ve shown your face here yet again! Vampire, Ruler of the Dead!
  441. Kanagi: Sister Momoko!! You again, knave?!
  442. Momoko: Obviously I'd be here.
  443. Momoko: Forcing the people of this town to live in fear is unforgivable.
  444. Kanagi: Stop it with your entitled blabber, human!
  445. Kanagi: Tonight, for sure.
  446. Momoko: Today, for sure.
  447. Kanagi: This impudent mouth...
  448. Momoko: This heinous soul...
  449. Kanagi: Will be silenced!
  450. Momoko: Shall be purified!
  451. Mitama: "Once upon a time, in a certain town, there was a prideful vampire who threw the town into terror and a sister who desperately strove to make the town peaceful again."
  452. Mitama: "The two of them, as fated rivals..."
  453. Kanagi: Let's see if you can handle this!!
  454. Momoko: I won't give in!!
  455. Mitama: "On clear nights."
  456. Momoko: NOW!!
  457. Kanagi: Ugh...!
  458. Mitama: "On rainy nights."
  459. Kanagi: I swear on the pride I hold as a vampire... I'll force you to retreat!
  460. Momoko: This is far from over!
  461. Mitama: "On sultry summer nights."
  462. Kanagi: Take this! Rock-Solid Snow Orb!
  463. Momoko: Such underhanded tactics! Stuffing a rock inside of a snowball...!
  464. Mitama: "On snowy winter nights."
  465. Mitama: "Each and every day, they struggled for their lives against each other."
  466. Mitama: "And yet..."
  467. Kanagi: Uoohhhh!
  468. Momoko: Hiyahhhhh!
  469. Kanagi & Momoko: Urghhh!
  470. Kanagi & Momoko: ...
  471. Mitama: "Their powers matched each other's so evenly that their fights would always end in a draw."
  472. Mitama: "This struggle couldn't continue forever, however."
  473. Mitama: "And then suddenly, the day that decided things arrived."
  474.

  476. Natsuki: Milady vampire~
  477. Natsuki: It looks as though those town vermin are scheming something!
  478. Kanagi: Leave them be.
  479. Kanagi: Concerning myself with such trifling matters would bring downfall to my name.
  480. Natsuki: Got it!
  481. Kanagi: Whatever strategy those lowly humans might employ, I care not.
  482. Kanagi: For there is but one duty for me to carry out...
  483. Kanagi: Well then, the sun should go down any time now...
  484. Kako: Milady vampire, if I may...?
  485. Kanagi: What is it?
  486. Kako: I'd like to advise against heading to town today...
  487. Kako: I have this...odd premonition that something bad will happen if you do...
  488. Kanagi: Your hunches often end up being right on the money, I must admit...
  489. Kanagi: But I won't back down!
  490. Kanagi: I'll never retreat until I've fulfilled the will of my ancestors!
  491. Kanagi: Bwahahaha!
  492. Kanagi: Ha ha, today at last, you will...
  493. Momoko: Tah!!
  494. Kanagi: Gwah!
  495. Kanagi: What?! Where do you think you're going?!!
  496. Kanagi: Haah... Haah... I've caught up to you now...!
  497. Momoko: Tah!!
  498. Kanagi: Gwah!!
  499. Kanagi: What...! You mean to run away again...?!
  500. Kanagi: You've got things you must protect in that direction, bastard!
  501. Kanagi: It's the town you're fleeing to!
  502. Kanagi: Haah... Haah... I've caught up to you...
  503. Kanagi: The town is within a stone's throw away now... There's nowhere left for you to run...
  504. *Tremble*...
  505. Kanagi: What?!
  506. Kanagi: M-my body...it refuses to move...
  507. Momoko: ...
  508. Kanagi's Voice: T-this smell must be...
  509. Kanagi's Voice: G-garlic...? And such huge concentrations of it...
  510. Momoko: This town holds a huge garlic harvest festival once every four years, and it's tomorrow.
  511. Momoko: Preparations for it are in progress as we speak.
  512. Kanagi: You lured me into a trap with your movements...
  513. Kanagi: Bwahahahaha! I've been underestimating you!
  514. Kanagi: In my eyes, you were just a weak-minded churchgoer who would never dare risk the town's safety...
  515. Kanagi: I couldn't have foreseen you pulling such tricks before now.
  516. Kanagi: ...I admit my loss.
  517. Kanagi: Finish me off.
  518. Momoko: ...No, I will not murder you.
  519. Kanagi: What...
  520. Momoko: The Lord our God pardons all sins.
  521. Momoko: If you repent with a sincere heart...
  522. Momoko: Our merciful hearts shall accept you.
  523. Kanagi: What... What...!
  524. <Backstage>
  525. Karin: ...Any time now...
  526. Karin: (The prideful vampire is supposed to reveal her trump card, "GC"...)
  527. Karin: (She will activate "Garlic Canceller"...)
  528. Karin: (Draining a large amount of her power, yet she will continue to battle to the very end...)
  529. Karin: (Because the sister showing her mercy...)
  530. Karin: (Was an unbelievable affront to her vampire pride.)
  531. Karin: (But I...failed to capture the vampire's character in full.)
  532. Karin: (And didn't make her sound mad enough while writing...)
  533. Karin: (But Nagitan, she...)
  534.
  535. FILENAME: text_311163-3.txt
  536. Kanagi: That confirms it. Taking into account the previously discussed factors...
  537. Kanagi: The vampire's proper characterization... Their "true identity" is apparent to me now.
  538. Kanagi: The vampire's proper characterization is...
  539. Karin: That true form is...?
  540. Kanagi: It's "the people of Daito", me included.
  541. Mitama: ...?!
  542. Kanagi: Obviously, I don't intend to make a baseless claim...
  543. Kanagi: That "Kirin"'s author used Daito as reference for their manga.
  544. Kanagi: However, when I take into account the truth I learned when Kyubey granted my wish...
  545. Kanagi: And the emotions and circumstances we have experienced...
  546. Kanagi: This vampire and Daito have quite a number of common points between them.
  547. Kanagi: (And this kind of situation isn't uncommon all around the country either...)
  548. Kanagi: (That just may be why the author decided to write such a story.)
  549. Karin: If I remember correctly, in the end...
  550. Karin: Kirin didn't help out the townsfolk...
  551. Karin: I just thought it was because she was making sure the townsfolk could fight on their own, but...
  552. Karin: Kirin must have actually hated the idea of ambushing the vampire.
  553. Karin: And the story had never shown the vampire attacking the town either...
  554. Momoko: She hasn't harmed anyone, and yet...
  555. Momoko: People feared her based on their unfair idea of her and then exterminated her...
  556. Mitama: She really is...just like us...
  557. Karin: I-I'm really sorry...!
  558. Karin: I went and wrote this play...without even realizing what the original story was about...
  559. Karin: ...But, precisely because of that... For the final scene...
  560. Karin: The vampire's furious speech has to be spoken in your own words, Nagitan!
  561. Karin: Nobody can do it better than you!
  562. Kanagi: What...!
  563. Mitama: Yes, I think that would be appropriate.
  564. Kanagi: ...
  565. Karin: (This is it, Nagitan... Let it all out!)
  566. Karin: (Let your feelings be heard...!)
  567. Kanagi: You aim to...offer me mercy... Is that how it's going to be...
  568. Kanagi: Repentance... Bwahahahaha... Don't think you can get careless just yet...
  569. Kanagi: We've crossed swords for far too many generations now...!
  570. Momoko: Yes, you're right...
  571. Kanagi: You want to end our conflict without resolving the reason behind it, then...
  572. Kanagi: Thus extending your hand to your enemy, the prideful vampire before you!
  573. Kanagi: Implying we should forget everything and leave the sins of our ancestors behind!!
  574. Momoko: Yes, that's exactly it. After all...
  575. Momoko: Isn't it all water under the bridge now?
  576. Kanagi: ...?!
  577. Kanagi: Ahhahahaha!!!
  578. Kanagi: Since it's all in the past, you think if I just apologize, it's going to be forgive and forget?!
  579. Kanagi: You're so full of yourself, you damn hypocrite!!
  580. Momoko: The townsfolk must see me in the same light as you do.
  581. Momoko: I simply think there's no point to this conflict.
  582. Kanagi: Has victory clouded your mind with arrogance?! My pride cannot allow this...
  583. Momoko: I am exceedingly well aware of how prideful you are.
  584. Kanagi: ...
  585. Kanagi: ...I could've been long dead by now, but you're still letting me live.
  586. Kanagi: ...Should I believe you, then?...
  587. Momoko: Yes. I'm not trying to deceive you. Repent and you shall be forgiven.
  588. Kanagi: ...Don't regret sparing me.
  589. Momoko: What?! You’re back on your feet?!
  590. Kanagi: I activated "Garlic Canceller" just now.
  591. Kanagi: It temporarily neutralizes garlic at the price of putting my body under enormous strain...
  592. Kanagi: I can only use this trump card once in my lifetime.
  593. Momoko: Guh...! Impossible...!
  594. Kanagi: ...I am a vampire full of pride.
  595. Kanagi: That's why I will tell you this, and only this, out of my own volition:
  596. Kanagi: Listen carefully to my confession.
  597. Momoko: ...?!
  598.
  599. FILENAME: text_311163-4.txt
  600. Kanagi: ...Express how I... No, how all of Daito feels through my performance...?
  601. Karin: Yes!
  602. Kanagi: ...In that case, let me run something by you first...
  603. Kanagi: About my speech here. Does it have to be filled with anger?
  604. Karin: Huh?!
  605. Kanagi: The climax might not be as exciting this way, but...
  606. Karin: (We did adjust the general plotline together with Togame-senpai and others...)
  607. Karin: (But most of the lines will have to be improvised...!)
  608. Karin: (It's all up to you now, guys...!)
  609. Momoko: You'll repent...of your own will...? Even while knowing you're able to move right now...?
  610. Kanagi: My pride is already in tatters, to be frank.
  611. Kanagi: The decision to give up avenging my ancestors didn't come lightly...
  612. Momoko: Then, why...
  613. Kanagi: Because, even though my clan and the townsfolk have been opposing each other for so long...
  614. Kanagi: ...I was never able to find a clear reason why.
  615. Momoko: ...!
  616. Kanagi: My clan would only pass down the past grudges and bitterness they bore, not explanations.
  617. Kanagi: But with time, I understood this: the more oppression from town our kind would face...
  618. Kanagi: The more we would retaliate in turn.
  619. Kanagi: "Stop blaming us for our ancestors' faults!" ― I'd always buried those words in my heart.
  620. Momoko: ...
  621. Kanagi: Eventually, it was no longer revenge that truly motivated me to fight you lot.
  622. Kanagi: The anger born from being made to put up with oppression for no particular reason took over.
  623. Momoko: ...So that's how you felt...
  624. Momoko: And I was about to force a confession out of you in these circumstances...
  625. Kanagi: My pride is wounded. My heart is seething with rage.
  626. Kanagi: Nevertheless...
  627. Kanagi: I want to be forgiven.
  628. Momoko: ...And thus you're seeking a compromise.
  629. Kanagi: I know you and I both are sick of this conflict.
  630. Kanagi: My heart had already given up on receiving forgiveness.
  631. Kanagi: "I don't know how to apologize. Destroying my enemy is the only way to break this cycle."
  632. Kanagi: ...That's what I convinced myself of.
  633. Kanagi: And if you're just going to tell me that "it's all in the past"...
  634. Kanagi: Then not reciprocating your actions would just be yet another disgrace to my name.
  635. Kanagi: Let me say it once more...
  636. Kanagi: I am remorseful for what I have done to this point. Please forgive me.
  637. Kanagi: ...Is that enough repentance?
  638. Momoko: Yes, your confession is accepted!
  639. Momoko: Now, let me do the same...
  640. Kanagi: Why are you repenting too...?
  641. Momoko: I am speaking on behalf of the townspeople.
  642. Momoko: We unfairly oppressed you based on the past quarrels of our ancestors...
  643. Momoko: Even though you didn't do anything to deserve it.
  644. Momoko: I hope you can find it in yourself to forgive us.
  645. Kanagi: ...Apology accepted.
  646. Momoko: Thank you.
  647. Kanagi: Haha, this feels kind of weird... It's like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
  648. Momoko: I feel the same.
  649. Momoko: I'm sure you can start things over with the townsfolk too, if that's what you wish for.
  650. Kanagi: Is that so... I would like to hope you're right.
  651. Momoko: That aside, let me tell you something I've noticed about you!
  652. Momoko: The town might see you vampires as the incarnation of fear itself, but, hear me out!
  653. Momoko: After all the time I spent duking it out with you, I came to realize this...
  654. Momoko: You guys just have a bit of a rough personality, but you aren't bad by nature!
  655. Kanagi: What are you...
  656. Momoko: Their impression of you is wrong― that's the whole issue!
  657. Momoko: They all cling to their irrational fears.
  658. Momoko: Your "terrifying vampire" reputation precedes you.
  659. Momoko: As such, I'm gonna do all that's in my power to help make others see you in a better light!
  660. Kanagi: ... I am indebted to you...
  661. Kanagi: Let's hold onto these feelings and start tomorrow... Little by little...
  662. Momoko: The garlic harvest festival is still happening tomorrow.
  663. Kanagi: ...Let's postpone those plans to the day after tomorrow, then...
  664. Mitama: "Thus the sister and the vampire joined hands in friendship, bidding farewell to their long conflict."
  665. Mitama: "And they all lived happily ever after."
  666. Konomi: The play was a lot of fun~
  667. Himika: For some reason... I feel really thankful to everybody for putting it together!
  668. Mitama: Everybody did a great job~ I simply loved it~
  669. Karin: The play was a success! It's all thanks to you, Nagitan!
  670. Kanagi: I'm happy to hear that.
  671. Karin: ...And once more, I'm really sorry.
  672. Karin: For not being considerate enough while writing the script for the play...
  673. Kanagi: What matters is that the play was a success.
  674. Kanagi: Moreover, it left me feeling refreshed from the bottom of my soul.
  675. Kanagi: Take pride in your work. You have nothing to be ashamed of.
  676. Karin: T-thank you a bunch...!
  677. Momoko: I'm feeling refreshed, too...
  678. Momoko: I mean, I got so into it that some of my own feelings might have slipped in there...
  679. Karin: Ah. Your acting was awesome, though!
  680. Mitama: A moment if you would, Kanagi?
  681. Kanagi: Hm? Is something up?
  682. Mitama: That resolution to the story... Is that how you honestly feel?
  683. Kanagi: ...Who can tell? Not me.
  684. Mitama: Who, indeed...
  685. Kanagi: If I had to say, this was a desirable, highly idealized outcome...
  686. Kanagi: If somebody suddenly asked me to let go of everything that happened and call it even for real...
  687. Kanagi: Would I be able to muster the same words in response?
  688. Kanagi: I really...don't know the answer to that...
  689. Kanagi: A lot happened, but this Halloween was a fun one.
