The little hawk-spirit--just sentient enough to convey the message that Kaati wished to speak to him, when it is convenient, and Hawk will be his guide to where she is--leads him to a place not too far off the Bawn, not far from a fire road. The forest is dry and sparse, and Kaati sits in the shade of a live oak, her head leaning back against the trunk, messenger bag and a round drum case beside her. Her face is strangely blank.

Sergei comes along in wolf form but shifts back to his human shape when he gets there. He quirks an eyebrow and waits silently.

She doesn't look at him, but movement flickers across her face, a tiny line or two appearing in her forehead and then fading away. She would have waited some time, as long as necessary.



"Sergei-rhya," she says quietly, in a voice as expressionless and distant and empty as her eyes. "There's something I need to tell you."

Sergei cracks his neck and waits, watching Kaati silently. He seems as relaxed as he ever gets.

Kaati twists to get something out of her bag, a big canteen-bottle of water; she rises smoothly and offers it out to him. When she speaks, her voice remains colorless. She lifts her gaze to his momentarily, for a statement or two, before turning her face away in a plainly submissive gesture; a dark, ugly bruise is revealed, below and behind her ear. "I asked permission to go to the heart of the cavern yesterday. I thought -- since I asked an Elder-- I thought it was all right. But it wasn't."

Sergei takes the offered canteen and takes a sip of water as he listens to Kaati's words and he speaks a single questioning word "Which?"

She looks up in numb confusion for a moment, and then glances away. "Eye of the Storm," she says quietly.

Sergei narrows his eyes slightly at the name when its offered, and he gestures for Kaati to continue if she has any more to add.

"I... I've told Battle Singer a lot, about-- what I can do," she says quietly. "Who I am. More than I should have, maybe. But I-- considered him a friend, and so... I thought it was right for him to know. So-- I thought that his packmate would know those things. That he was... aware, and-- and still accepted me." There is no emotion attached to the words. She closes her eyes.



"I went to the heart, and I prayed to Bear. Made an offering. I didn't... *do* anything. It was suicidal enough to even go there with the moon-- I don't know why I did."

I knew that-- I knew I'd had a... a flashback, because of the lost time, and because I was like this. I don't... there's a time afterward when I don't feel anything." She looks up--and up--to the face of the looming man. "I don't know what happened, exactly, in the between time," she says quietly. "I know that Donn-- that Battle-Singer is angry, because he didn't understand what I am, and he or his pack might lose face." She meets his gaze, steadily, revealing herself rather than challenging... although in this moment, there is little enough to reveal. An abyss of Not, where her soul should be. "I'll find out what happened," she says quietly. "Bryan was there. He walked out with me. He'll know, maybe. D-- Battle-Singer was too angry with me, today, to talk about it."



Kaati takes a breath, and draws herself to her scant height, shoulders setting, the slightest movement. "Whatever happened," she says quietly, "I accept the consequences."
