  72. The von Kormend family had its origins in the Holy Roman Empire, in the mid-1400s. As the Empire spread east to counteract the looming Turkish threat, new families popped up to administrate these lands in the Emperor's name. The Auer family became the count of Kormend, and soon simply became the von Kormends. As wars and upheavals shifted borders and political lines, the family eventually ended up in a landed estate southeast of Vienna, where they first encountered the supernatural. August von Kormend, in 1640, made a pact with a demon to gain sorcerous power before he marched off to fight protestants in the Thirty Years War. Repercussions of this pact rocked the family in 1683, when the demon returned to collect. The fallout attracted the attention of the Rosicrucian order, who invited the family in as benefactors carte blanche. A lasting effect of this pact is an uncomfortableness with Cold Iron that the family shares.

  74. Now, the family has had less and less to do with Rippers in general. While they tacitly support the war against supernatural monsters, their involvement has become more personal and insular in recent years. The third son in the main von Kormend line, Benedikt is currently in London living an upper crust lifestyle while visiting the homeland of his mother, Eleanor von Kormen, nee Griffin. Of course, the magic nature of his bloodline and family history was always destined to pull the family back into the fight of the Rippers.
