- The armoured figure hit the grass at an angle and skidded to a stop, making sparing use of the suit's thrusters.
- “What was that?” Asked the dark, hooded figure leaning on the solitary tree in the small park.
- “Well I figured loud, bright thrusters might attract attention. I thought this was meant to be kind of secret.” The armoured girl protested as she straightened herself up.
- “Yeah, real stealthy landing.” The hooded girl snarked.
- “Hmph.” The armoured girl pouted through her gas mask, “So who are we waiting on, just Corpse and the Knight?”
- “I'm here.” Said a voice in the darkness. A torch lit up on the armour's wrist and shot over the broad figure in the ragged hoodie.
- “Oh, sorry Corpse. I didn't see you there.”
- “Yeah, I kind of rock the stealth thing.” The gravelly voice commented with a hint of pride.
- The torchlight crossed over to the hooded girl by the tree, but failed to brighten the top half of her face.
- “Firebrand, what's up with your hood?”
- “Darkness glamor.” The girl explained.
- “It looks cool.”
- “I for one miss being able to see her eyes.” Came the dreamy voice up in the branches of the trees, and all eyes turned to its owner, “What? Firebrand has pretty eyes. They're nice to look at.”
- “Mammon, where's Knight?” Firebrand cursed to break the silence.
- “Well excuse me for living a long walk away.” Came the indignant voice of a young man from the park's gate.
- “You are almost 8 minutes late. You were meant to be here at 20 past.” The armoured girl chided.
- “Hey, what's with the civvies?” Firebrand stepped away from the tree, gesticulating.
- “We're doing the whole secret meeting thing, right? I thought the glow in the dark armour might be a bit showy.” The Knight explained.
- “Well it beats no mask at all, moron.”
- “So someone sees my face, so what? It's not like they're gonna know who I am.”
- “If one of us doesn't hide their identity, it risks compromising the others.” The armoured girl chided.
- “Corpse isn't wearing a mask!”
- “He at least thought to wear a hood.”
- “And don't you think me having a secret ID's a little fruitless, smart guy? I can put on big thick glasses, I'm still a dead man walking.”
- “Okay but-” The Knight began to protest.
- “Just suit up, nerd.” Firebrand rolled her eyes, unseen beneath the shadow.
- “Fine.” The young man reached for the hilt surreptitiously hidden under his jacket, and drew the blade. With the effect of lighting a beacon, brilliant white armour materialized around his body and he began to shine softly in the darkness. Emboldened by the armour, he refused to wither under the concentrated gazes, “Don't look at me like that, the Knight of the Shining Blade was not envisioned with secrecy in mind.”
- “Or brevity.” Corpse added.
- “Thank you for putting your suit on, Barry.” After a moment, Blitz Spirit's hand flew to the mouth of her gasmask, “I'm so sorry, the suit ran facial recognition automatically, I didn't mean to learn your secret identity.”
- “Don't worry about it, Blitz.” Barry waved it off.
- “Your name is Barry?” Corpse gave a hacking laugh.
- “Oh yeah, like you can talk, John Doe.”
- “If it makes you feel any better, my names Jenny.” Blitz wiggled her fingers.
- Firebrand put her hand over her eyes, “Temple and Arch, guys, we are the worst team.”
- “So your name is the only one we do not, know, Firebrand.” Silver commented from up in the tree.
- “And it's staying that way. Blitz, you called the meeting, what's the business?” Firebrand raised an arm such that her loose sleeve slipped down over her scarred arm, and touched her opposite hand to one of the glyphs cut into her skin. An audible wave swept out to the edge of the park, masking the group to anyone outside the fence.
- “Well, I just thought we should get more organised. If we're a team, we should meet up regularly and share intel. That's the point, right?” Jenny fluttered anxiously, rubbing a gloved hand up and down a plated arm.
- “I thought the point was nailing bads too big for one of us.” Corpse played idly with a knife.
- “You know, that isn't even all that big.” Barry mused.
- “Do you have intel to share?” Firebrand pressed on.
- “Uhm...” Blitz Spirit havered.
- “Really anything bigger than a mugger with superpowers and it's too big for one of us.” Barry stroked his helmed chin.
- “Any word on that vampire that got away from me?” Firebrand suggested.
- “Oh, actually, I did find indication of what could be vampire activity in my neck of the woods. Hey, do you want to come over and hunt him down this weekend?” Blitz clapped her hands together.
- “Sure?”
- “Yay! It'll be so fun.”
- “Blitz you did not make me hoof miles across town after midnight to watch you arrange a girl's night out.” Barry glared through his eye-slit.
- “Oh, can I come too?” Sister Silver called down excitedly from her tree. Corpse shared a look with Barry.
- “Sure, let's make a night of it.” Firebrand smiled. For a little while there was just the quiet hum of Jenny's running systems and the wind through Silver's tree.
- “Oh, uh, I ran into that goblin guy, gave him the old Shining Light third degree, turns out the whole thing was a huge misunderstanding.” Barry offered.
- “No kidding?” Corpse looked up from his seat on the ground.
- “Yeah, turns out he actually had been promised the medallion and the ghost just forgot about it.” Barry shrugged his shoulders.
- “I am glad. I found the goblin's jokes amusing, it is nice he is not a thief.” Silver smiled, then alighted gently to the grass from the branches of her tree, looking from face to face, “Is something the matter with everyone?”
- “I think there's an elephant in the room.” Firebrand commented, and looked to Blitz.
- Jenny, in turn, looked from face to face. “I was scared. I thought you were the best people to call.”
- “Someone wanna enlighten me?” Corpse propped himself up.
- “You can't feel it?” Barry asked, “It's like... a wind, but... in magic, instead of air.”
- “Strong, continuous thaumaturgical and ethereal flow, possibly indicating a shift in global leylines or the presence of some extremely powerful mojo.” Firebrand offered from beneath the tree, “But yeah, magic wind works.”
- “Huh. I guess I've been feeling, like... a pull. Thought it was a zombie thing.” Corpse shrugged.
- “I only feel it when I've got the shine on.” Barry added.
- “I'm reading a lot of extranormal particle motion too.” Blitz looked around, then fell despondent, “It's really no fun being the only non-magical team member.”
- “I barely count. I just have a magic sword. That summons magic armour.” Barry said.
- “Also your voice glows.” Corpse looked up at confused faces, “What, nobody else sees that?”
- “How would a voice glow? It's sound.” Jenny asked, puzzled.
- “It's like- nevermind, it's a zombie thing.”
- “So, we all feel the westward call of the world's forces, yes?” Silver Birch asked quietly.
- “Looks like it.” Jenny confirmed.
- “And if we're sensing it, surely some bigger goods are sensing it, right? Why isn't anyone talking about it?” Firebrand gesticulated wildly.
- “You think it has anything to do with what that fairy was ranting about?” Barry asked, “You know, the last time we got together?”
- “What, the road thing?” Corpse scratched his head under the hood with the point of his knife.
- “The Call of the Crossroads.” Jenny read from the display provided by her suit's memory banks.
- “Any meaning to you, Silver? You're the resident expert on the fae.” Firebrand looked coolly to the delicate girl to her right.
- “Oh, I'm just a dryad. And, you know, I don't really have many connections to the fae any more.” Silver Birch looked around shyly, “But no. I've never heard of it before the fairy boy.”
- “Guess it's time to hit the books.” Firebrand decided.
- “Don't you people have homework?” Barry looked plaintively from Firebrand to Blitz Spirit.
- “I don't care about my grades.” Firebrand shrugged.
- “I'm homeschooled.” Jenny rubbed the back of her helmet.
- “So are we done? Some of us have to be in school in the morning.”
- “Nerd.” Corpse called from the floor.
- “Call of the Crossroads. Corpse, ask around with the lowlives, Jenny, do your computer thing, Silver and I will do the magic thing.”
- “Wait, what about me?” Barry asked indignantly.
- “You have homework.”
- “Yeah, but I wanna help.”
- “If we need someone hit with a sword, we'll call you, big guy.” Corpse staggered to his feet.
- “I can help! I have people!” Barry insisted.
- “You mean you're in touch with the magic beard dude who gave you the armour?” Firebrand raised an eyebrow in privacy.
- “Well, no, not exactly. He appears to me sometimes but... I have other people.”
- “Who, praytell?”
- “Hey, you learned my secret identity, you don't get to hear about my people.” Barry huffed.
- “Fine. Consult your people, Barry.”
- “So what are we hoping for? Big bad we can smash?” Corpse brushed himself off.
- “Personally, I'm hoping to find out it's somebody else's problem.” Firebrand stepped away from the tree.
- “Preferably Americans.” Jenny contributed.
- “All right. Call of the Crossroads. Talk to the scum. Got it, boss. I gotta go crawl into an alley.” Corpse saluted with two fingers as he swaggered off.
- “I gotta get home too. Any chance of a lift, Jenny?”
- “Sure thing, Barry. You're a little out of my way but it's no problem.”
- “Did your thingy tell you my address too?” Barry pleaded.
- “...No...” Blitz lied, badly.
- “It was nice seeing you all.” Silver Birch waved broadly.
- “Always a pleasure, SS.” Barry sheathed his sword and dispelled his armour, and was promptly picked up in a bridal carry by Blitz, “Oh, this is dignified.”
- “See you this weekend, girls.” Jenny trilled as she took off, all thoughts of stealth forgotten.
- In the silent darkness, Silver Birch shuffled closer to Firebrand, “Will you stay a while, Firebrand?”
- Firebrand pulled herself up into a branch and pulled down her hood to dispel the darkness around her face, “Sure thing, Silver. I got all night.”
