- Definition
- Transhumanism is the term that describes the enchancement
- of an human-being by a product of human technology.
- Problématique
- Transhumanism can be viewed as an extension of humanism, from which it is partially derived. Humanists believe that humans matter,
- that individuals matter. We might not be perfect, but we can make things better by promoting rational thinking, freedom, tolerance,
- democracy, and concern for our fellow human beings. Transhumanists agree with this but also emphasize what we have the potential to become.
- Just as we use rational means to improve the human condition and the external world, we can also use such means to improve ourselves,
- the human organism. In doing so, we are not limited to traditional humanistic methods, such as education and cultural development.
- We can also use technological means that will eventually enable us to move beyond what some would think of as “human”.
- Plan
- In human enhancement we can find human genetic engineering, gene therapy, neurotechnology
- nanomedicine, 3d bioprinting ect...
- Arts and culture
- Even if human enhancement techniques are becoming more more developped and precise, we can already see it everywhere with
- arts and culture. For instance, fictional transhumanist scenarios exist since a long time, we can find tranhumanism in books, like diaspora, permuation city,
- movies, like Blade Runner or Gattaca, comic books, like Cpatain America or Iron Man and even video games, like Deus Ex and the well known Metal Gear Solid.
- Fact of life
- These story and scenarios can show us what people think about the future and how the world will be when this stage of developpement is achieved.
- It can be good, for instance we can dream about a world where everyone is happy, everything can be cured and everyone can eat, which is unrealistic for now.
- Or bad, where transhumanism don't resolve conflict but amplified tension between people and culture. Which lead to conflict, war, inquality, racism...
- Transhumanism is a big debate...
- Hand Transplant
- Hand transplant is the solution for people who loose their hands.
- They are much stronger than human hands, because some are made of titanium,
- but they come with an heavy cost. A normal hand transplant operation cost about 64 thousand dollars.
- The price for robotics hands like these should be around this.
- As it's a new technology the social security refund is really low and the cost is quite the same anywhere.
- Gene therapy
- Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease. In the future, this technique may allow
- doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells instead of using drugs or surgery.
- Replacing a mutated gene that causes disease with a healthy copy of the gene.
- Inactivating, or “knocking out,” a mutated gene that is functioning improperly.
- Introducing a new gene into the body to help fight a disease.
- The technique remains risky and is still under study to make sure that it will be safe and effective.
- Mind uploading
- Mind uploading is the process of of scanning mental state (including long-term memory and "self") of a particular brain substrate and copying it to a computer.
- The simulated mind could be within a virtual reality or simulated world. Alternatively, the simulated mind could reside in a computer that is inside (or connected to) a
- (not necessarily humanoid) robot or a biological body in real life. Some believe mind uploading is humanity's current best option for preserving the identity of the species.
- It can provide a permanent backup to our "mind-file" after a global disaster for exemple.
