- Homework: parts 2, 3, 4 on p. 74 about the reading on p. 75
- Also: look up the word “fad” and prepare to explain “fad diet”
- spelling bee = a competition for children to correctly spell English words
- English is weird. It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though.
- ---
- p. 74 part 2
- 1 False (symmetry, averageness, strength, and health)
- 2 True
- 3 True
- 4 False (“the quest for beauty goes deeper than vanity”)
- part 3
- 1 a/b
- 2 b
- 3 a
- 4 b (unimportant)
- 5 a (to fuss over = to show excessive concern for something; if you fuss over a person’s appearance, it will make her feel special)
- part 4 - do this in pairs now (choose which one best describes the purpose of the article)
- not 1 - because there’s a lot that isn’t objective or scientific
- not 2 - because there’s a lot that isn’t only subjective and anecdotal
- not 3 - because it’s not about teaching the reader something new
- yes 4 - objective facts about cultures and history, rhetorical questions to invite reflection, personal anecdote to illustrate the question
- not 5 - it’s not entertainment or stories
- ---
- “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

- part 6 - Which expressions with “face” have these meanings?
- a let’s be honest (with ourselves) = let’s face it
- b sad looks = long faces
- “Why the long face?” = “Why are you sad?”
- part 7 - First decide which of the four things “face” means in each expression, then explain what the expressions mean.
- 1 credibility - lose face = lose credibility or reputation
- (We can also talk about “saving face”, which means preserving credibility or reputation.)
- 2 attitude/expression - put a brave face on = she tried to look unaffected by the situation
- 3 surface - at face value = exactly as it seems at first, without any hidden motives
- 4 expression - keep a straight face = avoid laughing (or showing other emotions)
- (“straight face” is not too different from “poker face”)
- 5 confront - face the music = accept the consequences of something
- 6 surface - on the face of it = at first glance, without looking at any subtle details

- Recognizing parts of speech - Identify the parts of speech of the unfamiliar words in this poem:
- `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves (‘twas = it was - it’s a normal but old-fashioned word)
- Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
- All mimsy were the borogoves,
- And the mome raths outgrabe.
- …
- And, as in uffish thought he stood,
- The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
- Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
- And burbled as it came!

- p. 74 part 8 - You work for a company that is trying to market a new face cream. You are in charge of preparing the ad campaign for the cream.
- In pairs, decide who is student A and who is student B.
- Student A go to p. 155, student B go to 156. Read your role description.
- First take a couple minutes to think of ideas for how to market it (what will your ads say about the product? what will people be doing in the ads? etc.).
- Then have a “meeting” with your colleague to agree on what ads you will produce (choose who will appear in the ads, what they will be doing and saying, who your target audience will be, etc.).

- p. 76 part 1 - Read how different governments encourage healthy people and discuss the three questions.
- part 2 - Listen to the discussion and answer the questions.
- 1 Healthy employees don’t leave or get sick as often, so good health means good productivity.
- 2 sports or group exercises, install a gym, bike program
- 3 Qatar encourages companies to install gyms.
- 4 Bike project is approved, group exercise is rejected

- 1 there may not be a budget for that
- 2 a lot of people may do these things anyway in their spare time
- 3 original idea, it might be fun
- 4 that isn’t the intention, it could look that way
- 5 exactly what proportion of the cost, I think that that kind of individual incentive probably works much better
- 6 easy to monitor whether they used the bikes to commute to work or for leisure, you’d probably just have to accept that risk
- It’s not so original, I’ll grant you.
- grant = give or concede (a point or argument)
