- The "Crests of KNOB" is an item hunt flagset, put together by Scorpion__Max, using Dragon Warrior 2 Randomizer, created by gameboyf9. You can download the randomizer here: https://github.com/gameboy9/DW2Randomizer
- GOAL: Obtain five crests, then turn them in for the "Charm of Rubiss".
- TIMING: Timer/Race starts at confirmation of message speed and ends when the 4th flame extinguishes after triggering the dialog with Rubiss.
- FLAGS: RUuLHCTAYr3g2x2e4
- HOW TO PLAY: The randomizer generates an overworld that is broken down into 4 sections (three islands and "the rest" of the world).
- 1st ISLAND: On the first island you will find 2 castles, a town, 2 caves, and 2 monoliths. When you gain control of the Hero, head downstairs and get your first treasure chest then check out the tool shop before you exit. You will want to note if they sell keys or the flute (buy the flute ASAP when you get the money).
- When exiting the castle you will want to explore until you find the other castle, paying attention to anything else you find along the way. When you find it, enter and talk to the King. This will start the quest to obtain the prince as your second party member. Again, check the tool shop, and exit the castle.
- The next task we must complete is talking to an old man in the Spring of Bravery. You will find 2 caves on the 1st island. The cave you enter that starts you out at the bottom of the screen is the one we want. The other cave (Lake Cave) starts you out in the northeast. Loot the 3 treasure chests along the way, talk to the old man, then exit the cave.
- Proceed to the only town you will find on the 1st island and enter it. The prince will be standing inside the room at the inn. Talk to him and he will join your party!
- The game opens up a little from here, but not too much. With the Prince in your party you can head back to Lake Cave and loot the 7 chests there. This would be a good idea especially if you did not get the "Mirror of Ra" item. If you got the Mirror from the Spring of Bravery, you can fast track getting the Princess and return to this cave with a full party.
- If you found a "Golden Key" then you can loot the treasury in Midenhall and obtain the single chest in Cannock too. Remember to toot the flute in every location you enter (only works on the first floor, might not work in towns/castles).
- Now if you have the Mirror, or there are no more chests left to access on the 1st island, it is time to head to the 2nd island! You do this by entering the Cannock Shrine/Monolith. There are 2 monoliths on the first island. One monolith will be a 2x2 room with a Travel Door (looks like a Water Butthole), and the other a bigger room with an old man, 2 guards, and a locked door. We want to find the latter, then proceed down the stairs to the cave of Hamlin (You must have the Prince in your party for this to be accessible). It will not matter what path you take inside the cave. Both paths exit to the 2nd island.
- 2nd ISLAND: The 2nd island is all about getting the Princess in your party. To do this you need the Mirror of Ra. If you did not get the mirror on the 1st island, it will be somewhere on this island.
- NOTE: I do not know if the logic is capable of placing the Golden Key on the 2nd island and the Mirror in a chest blocked by a Golden Door on the 1st island. Keep this is mind.
- This island will have 2 caves, a town, a tower, a monolith, and a searchable swamp tile.
- You can ignore both of the caves unless you want to go back to the 1st island. These are the exits from Hamiln cave.
- The town is where you will find the princess, in dog form. Use the Mirror while facing the dog and the Princess will regain her true form and join your party.
- If you still do not have the Mirror then you should find the swamp tile and search it. The swamp tile is a single swamp tile, surrounded by water, with a bridge leading to it.
- Last place to look for the Mirror will be the Tower of the Wind. There are 3 chests in there with items and 1 that is always empty (the one on the top floor). Empty chests from the vanilla game will always be empty in the rando. Of course even if you have the Mirror you will want to come in here and toot to see if it holds a crest. Additional chests may also give you better gear, gold, a flute, the golden key, etc. It may be worth the time (and xp you'll get from encounters) to grab them.
- With the Princess in the party you can now access the Moonbrooke Monolith and head to the 3rd island. There is a hidden golden door inside this monolith that leads to a Water Butthole. You can ignore it as you want to take the steps to the 3rd island.
- 3rd ISLAND: This island has 1 guarantee, the town of Lianport will be on it somewhere. Inside the town of Lianport is a ship that you acquire by defeating a few gremlins. With the ship in your possession you can now access the rest of the world!
- THE REST OF THE WORLD: I consider this the 4th section of the overworld because not everything else in guaranteed to be on the 3rd island, only Lianport. Now while you will find other things on the 3rd island, you might also have to sail to find other islands that generated places on them.
- As you sail you will notice the map is enclosed by a wall of impassible mountains (you do not world wrap), and somewhere inside the map will be another section of impassible mountains (The Rhone area). A moat should generate along the boarder of the map unless Rhone gets in the way.
- Past getting the ship there are only a few more guarantees within the rando.
- GUARANTEES: Important to these flags, 2 crests will always be in a fixed location. One crest will be inside the castle of Osterfair, and the other atop The Lighthouse.
- In Osterfair, talk to the king, defeat the enemy he throws at you, and you are rewarded the Sun Crest.
- At The Lighthouse, ascend to the top of the tower (you will need the golden key, and thus this makes it a required item), follow the old man, defeat the Gremlins, and obtain the Stars Crest.
- Additional crests can be in either of these 2 locations.
- Other guarantees in the game are meaningless for this overall goal, but might have a use.
- The Evil Clown in the basement jail of Midenhall (Need Silver & Jailor's Keys, and maybe Stepguard) will always give you a Staff of Thunder (Casts Infernos in battle, Equippable by the Prince & Princess, Sells for good money, respawns after selling it for a gold grind).
- The Water Butthole in Midenhall will always go to the Water Butthole in Zahan Shrine, which was fixed to always be on the 1st island. minor shortcut, perhaps.
- The Treasures (item) will always get you a Flute in Lianport. You will need the item, a ship, and the Silver Key to trade for it. This is the only other time a Silver Key might be useful. You can also get the Flute in a chest or in an Item Shop. Doubtful this would ever come into play.
- The prisoner in Wellgarth will always give you the Watergate Key, which is useless in the rando (The Watergate in Tuhn does nothing).
- The Token of Erdrick will always get you the Helmet of Erdrick. Find the jerk to trade for it. This is the best helmet for the hero, but not something you'd go out of your way to get.
- Finally, the Water Butthole in Beran may always go to the Water Butthole within the Monolith on the path to Rhone.
- WATER BUTTHOLES: They seem optional, and you'd be taking most of them blindly. They might offer a shortcut though so if you do take them pay attention to where they bring you.
- SEARCH SPOTS: Along with the swamp search spot on the 2nd island, there are two more overworld search spots that will generate on the 3rd island or the "rest of the world". Both these locations will be forest tiles which will have a single bridge that accessed them. One will be surrounded by water, the other impassible mountains.
- The Fire Monolith (has three Water Buttholes and a flame sprite within) has a search spot inside it. Walk out the right side and hug the wall north. Search inside the little cutout corner in the Northeast. Note that this monolith's center Water Butthole will always connect to the center Water Butthole of the Beran Monolith. So if you find that one first (looks the same, except with an old man), jump in the center portal and get the search item in the Fire Monolith.
- In the town of Hamlin (Princess town), you can access a jail cell with the golden key and jailor's key. Inside the jail cell are 2 enemy NPCs, one which isn't moving. Talk to them to attack (doesn't matter which), then search the NE corner, where the enemy was.
- Last search spot(s) is in the town of Zahan. In the NE of town there is a dog. Walk close enough to it and it will move to a specific tile. Search the tile it is facing for an item. Now there may also be a second search item in this town. Sometimes one generates to the north of where the dog originally is (left most tree tile on the top most row of trees in the area). Check the right one first, then the top. It might be guaranteed you find the Golden Key here, like in vanilla.
- TIP FOR A LONGER LASTING EXPERIENCES: The goal is to get 5 crests, not to loot all chests or have the best equipment in the game. Two of the crests are always in the same place, so you just have to seek out 3 more.
- ALWAYS GET THE FLUTE! Flute echoing means there is a crest. You should know if you have to explore areas or not when you first step into the place.
- GOLDEN KEY IS REQUIRED. You will have to find one to complete the game.
- NAVIGATIONAL AWARENESS. Remember where stuff is, and how you got there.
- FIND A BALANCE between gaining levels for stats & spells, and continuing your progress.
- RIPPLE! Don't play or learn the rando after consuming it.
