- W - Lord of Fog:
- The edge of a vast lake is bathed in the cool morning mist of an autumn day. Dew drops roll off the needles of numerous trees surrounding the water, the keen and coo of birds waking soon filling the woods. Sparse rays of sunshine filter through the trees, the sky overcast and dreary looking, the beginnings of a storm on the wind.
- A small herd of deer make their way through the woods and to the lake, leaves and twigs crunching under hoof. The stag stands proudly as he walks to the water. As he leans down to get a drink his ear twitches. Something is nearby. He lifts his head in time to miss an arrow aimed straight for him, letting out a frightened cry. His herd sprint away as he lowers his head and charges at the attackers.
- Only something else gets there before him.
- A grey blur rushes past him and fills the air with a dense fog, thick as the water he was drinking, rendering everything invisible. He calls out, frightened and alarmed, spinning in place and ramming his head forward. All he can do is listen to the faint sounds of his herd. And the screaming from his attackers.
- Just as suddenly as the fog came it disperses, leaving him standing alone by the lake once more. The body of a man lays before him, drained and pale, his skin damp with water and blood. Looking out over the lake he can make out the appearance of his savior amidst a blanket of fog, soaring upwards before plunging into the lake.
- X - Verminous Undying:
- Death.
- It smells of death in here. Cracked dirt and stone give way to rotten moss and mildew. Faint clouds of spores waft in the air with every motion but otherwise everything is still.
- Motionless.
- Dead.
- The earth crunches as the party makes their way deeper into this dead place, talks of loot and treasure filling the decayed halls. Underneath it is the constant buzzing of thousands of flies, swarming every spot not touched by torchlight. The stench of death gets more potent as they pass through the hallway and entered a large chamber with a yawning chasm in front of them.
- Something juts from the massive pit, almost like a pillar holding up the ceiling, but it has the appearance of worn parchment from what can be seen. Most of it is shrouded in a shadow that neither torch nor spell can penetrate. But peering out of the cloak like front of it is a pair of orange eyes. They burn like suns to the travelers’ despite their dullness. A faint crinkling noise is heard as the thing shudders, appendages along its front beginning to slowly move.
- The torch dies out before it even hits the floor as they sprint away and all that can be heard is cacophonous buzzing.
- Y-2 - Final Curiosity:
- Something was wrong.
- This wasn’t how this was supposed to happen.
- But the ritual had been done perfectly! What was missing? What was prepared wrong?
- As crimson blood turns sour and browns, swirling and filling the runes etched into the floor, a portal opens up on the floor. Spurs of bone jut upwards, a pair of eight followed by six. No something was definitely amiss. There were supposed to be just six! Bone crown gives way to fatty, sallow flesh that pulses and wobbles as it rises from the floor.
- And then a deafening cry came from the beast. Not one of triumph or thanks but of pain and suffering, like an infant’s wail in a rainstorm. The necromancers fall to their knees, clutching their heads as they feel something shatter deep inside, a deep, black ichor draining from their eyes, mouths, and ears.
- The fluid pools together to form a solid black mask, arcane energies trailing behind as it floats about the room, prodding the numerous corpses that now surround its body.
- Y-1 - Sum of Nothing:
- Fresh blood flows into the runes etched in stone, its brilliant red color turning brighter before glowing. A deafening crack echoes through the room as the floor bulges upwards and splinters, sending shards of stone and crystallized blood everywhere.
- A portal opens up in the impossible space and six bone spires jut out. Black fluid rolls over the misshapen form and coalesces into a black mask that eagerly flies around the room, rushing through cultist after cultist, each falling to the floor gasping for breath.
- They all witness as more and more of the god-beast emerges, flipper like limbs slapping against its supple flesh. A deep, glorious cry echoes from it and shatters the remainder of the room, staining it all in energies from its home. It seeps into the ground around it, roots and vermin turning into disgusting, meaty polyps that writhe along the ground towards their new master, followed by the now twisted cultists.
- This is just how it should be.
- Z - Servant of Heat:
- Entropy. The eternal enemy. That which cannot be defeated.
- That was how it was, in times long gone.
- Steam rises from the quasi-mechanical frame as it stands. Pseudometals bulge and flex like muscle, each containing extreme amounts of energy. It gazes around its surroundings, each motion letting out a deep hiss.
- The land around it is nothing but barren rock and magma. The crumpled remains of stonework and housing and what was once a castle are visible but will soon be engulfed by the encroaching fires. It reaches a hand down and grabs a flame from beneath it, the sprite of positive energy dancing in its palm.
- It raises its other hand and gently pats it before placing it back down, the eager entity engulfing a surviving tree in moments. After a few more moments of staring at its work the being marches onward, waves of heat washing over its massive frame.
- There was much more to do to stop the end.
