  1. [12:56:51 PM CDT] <[Cy]> |||+++--- Chapter IV ---+++|||
  2. [1:09:40 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne waits until Tapajiyou has left before turning to the others.
  3. [1:10:41 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I don't know about you all, but it sounds like this place is heading towards an open conflict.
  4. [1:11:09 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow steps forward to grab one of the letters, scanning it casually.
  5. [1:11:18 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Yes, of one sort or another.
  6. [1:16:02 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Eucasia: While the Coalition is at war and claims Oyashima as part of their alliance, this country would likely assert their neutrality if any open conflict arises. As representatives of the Coalition, we will have to show our hosts the dangers of the Dominion and let them decide on their own.
  7. [1:18:15 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> And then we sweep in and save the day, eh?
  8. [1:20:32 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It would be better if we stood a chance of being rescued by them, rather than having to stand against the Dominion's powers coupled with their own.
  9. [1:21:28 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Eucasia: You've seen Tomashi, even though it was Coalition resources that brokered the peace, there was little mention of it. We should just be satisfied that the enemy will not gain a foothold here when we leave.
  10. [1:24:07 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Provided we can ensure that. This is ill news with the prince; we're losing the war of diplomacy.
  11. [1:29:16 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> We can at least see if there's any one here who can understand these missives; they may give us some insight valuable in the effort to catch up and overtake.
  12. [1:29:39 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne glances at the papers.
  13. [1:30:33 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Eucasia: Theirs is a covert form of diplomacy; quick to get a foothold but slow to take effect. They cannot call for public support without first explaining why they acted in secret and proving that there was no ulterior motive. We have some advantages yet.
  14. [1:31:34 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Let
  15. [1:31:51 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> True. Perhaps we can step up our public efforts.
  16. [1:31:59 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne pauses to think before continuing.
  17. [1:32:29 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Let's pass these to Marjolaine first. If she can't read them, we'll have to send them back to the Coalition.
  18. [1:33:05 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> A sensible course of action.
  19. [1:33:50 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow collects the papers, and directs herself out of the room to seek Marjolaine.
  20. [1:34:57 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne nods at Eucasia before following Meadow out.
  21. [1:38:44 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [You find the children in one of the Coalition's rooms. Glanari and Sindr are at the far end, seated all proper and adult-like over tea on pillows around a small, low table, discussing something. Marjolaine and Tade are playing an Oyashiman board game that they've acquired from somewhere.]
  22. [1:40:28 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks to Marjolaine and Tade, crouching down to get a better look at the game they're playing.
  23. [1:40:59 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Hello, Marjolaine, Tade. What's this? I don't think I've seen it before.
  24. [1:43:10 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [There are several pieces on each side on a grid, Oyashiman script on each piece.]
  25. [1:43:23 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Tade: A neighbour gave it to us yesterday.
  26. [1:45:12 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Oh, that was really nice of them! Are you having fun playing it?
  27. [1:51:20 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Tade: Yes, but we are still figuring it out.
  28. [1:52:57 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Yeah, it looks like it might be hard to understand if you can't read the writing there.
  29. [1:57:12 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Tade: He said those are just the names of the pieces, it's just hard to remember all the rules.
  30. [1:58:14 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Oh, okay. But actually, I wanted to talk to you about reading something else. Marjolaine, in particular.
  31. [2:04:23 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Can you come with us for a minute? You can both come, if you want to.
  32. [2:07:28 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The two children exchange glances and get up from the table.]
  33. [2:09:31 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thanks. I don't think I'll keep you away from your game for too long.
  34. [2:09:56 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks out of the room, looking for an empty one nearby.
  35. [2:10:38 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne sees Meadow walk past her and calls out.
  36. [2:10:49 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> You're not taking them back to Eucasia and the others?
  37. [2:12:42 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> No, I don't think so. We'll just talk a little in private.
  38. [2:13:09 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne raises an eyebrow.
  39. [2:13:25 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Lets go back to the others. They might have questions of their own.
  40. [2:13:48 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne turns to Marjolaine.
  41. [2:14:13 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Actually, why don't I ask now: can you read the Dominion script?
  42. [2:16:04 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [She makes an unhappy expression, but nods.]
  43. [2:16:32 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow sighs.
  44. [2:17:30 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> ...We have some letters here that are written in the Dominion script. It would help us an awful lot if you could help us understand what they say. It might help us keep the Dominion out of Oyashima.
  45. [2:17:43 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne looks at Meadow and motions her head in the direction of where the other Wayward were meeting.
  46. [2:18:26 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Hanne, please.
  47. [2:19:56 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Let's go.
  48. [2:21:48 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks close to Hanne, and speaks in a quiet voice:
  49. [2:21:53 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The kids look between the two adults, and the others sitting around a table in the garden.]
  50. [2:22:29 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> There's no need to trot her out like a pony at a show and make her perform. Let her read the letters in private. We can take her to the others after that, if we have to.
  51. [2:23:35 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne looks at Meadow incredulously.
  52. [2:25:04 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow looks back, impassive.
  53. [2:25:15 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> What are you even on about? No one was even thinking that; no one but you it seems. Why have her read it twice when we can have it all settled in one go?
  54. [2:26:40 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne crosses her arms.
  55. [2:27:44 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow looks over her shoulder at Marjolaine.
  56. [2:28:52 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> You're making more work for everyone. If Marj really does dislike it, then she won't have to do it more than once if everyone's already there.
  57. [2:33:37 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Tade and Marjolaine are still standing at the threshold of the room, their shoes on now. They're their usual selves and not too focused on the adults near or far.]
  58. [2:34:54 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow sighs again. She continues in her quiet voice:
  59. [2:35:32 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Alright. We'll try it out.
  60. [2:35:55 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow turns to Marjolaine and Tade, speaking in her normal voice.
  61. [2:36:19 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> This way, please. There are other people who would also like to know that the letters say.
  62. [2:36:58 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne shrugs and leads the way back to the other Wayward.
  63. [2:38:36 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The two kids hurry to catch up to the adults, Tade visibly more interested than Marjolaine.]
  64. [2:39:51 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow follows behind Hanne to the others.
  65. [2:46:29 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne leads the group back to where the others are gathered. She motions for Meadow to lay out the papers onto a table.
  66. [2:47:38 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> We're in luck, Marjolaine here says she can read the Dominion script.
  67. [2:48:03 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow walks to the table, laying the papers out in a row on the table. She turns to Marjolaine to ask,
  68. [2:48:15 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Could you come here and take a look at these, please?
  69. [2:48:37 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne steps aside for Marjolaine.
  70. [2:51:27 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The kids come up to the table to look at the documents. Marjolaine gazes into the loopy markings with a frown.]
  71. [2:53:13 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Can you read what they say, Marjolaine?
  72. [2:56:19 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Marjolaine: Three hundred crates of salt, one hundred crates of sugar-plant, three hundred crates of grey steel, two hundred fifty barrels of lamp oil, fifty crates of something... the other page is a schedule of shipping.
  73. [2:56:54 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It doesn't say shipping where to or from?
  74. [3:00:31 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Marjolaine: I don't know these names. Ugonalu, Rhigon, Invuth?
  75. [3:01:15 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Here, how about we write those down.
  76. [3:01:27 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow looks about for writing implements.
  77. [3:03:26 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Rodyon produces a roll of parchment and tears off the half he hasn't used yet, and a writing charcoal.]
  78. [3:04:16 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow starts to take dictation from Marjolaine, prompting:
  79. [3:04:34 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Can you tell me what's being sent from where to where?
  80. [3:06:41 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Marjolaine: No. These two pages aren't related.
  81. [3:07:27 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Oh, the list isn't about what's being shipped?
  82. [3:09:22 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I believe they mentioned the letters were sent several months apart.
  83. [3:13:41 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Right. Marjolaine, do the letters say when they were written?
  84. [3:14:32 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Marjolaine: I don't know the calendar.
  85. [3:15:01 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The girl turns the pages over to see if there's anything else. Seeing that there isn't, she puts them back down, done with them.]
  86. [3:17:10 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow finishes writing down the list Marjolaine recited earlier.
  87. [3:18:10 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you. Can I ask you to explain the shipping schedule? It might be good to have a copy of it that everyone can read.
  88. [3:22:37 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Marjolaine: It's a list of strange names. The names of the ships here, the name of the ports here, the dates here.
  89. [3:25:07 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> /me sets down her parchment on the table next to the list that Marjolaine is looking at.
  90. [3:26:05 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Here, let's make a copy of it. We'll start at the top, and work down to the bottom. If you don't know what something means, or it's just a name, we can just write down what it sounds like.
  91. [3:26:42 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne turns to Eucasia while Meadow is working.
  92. [3:27:39 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Should we interpret the nature of these documents to imply they've been working together for some time now?
  93. [3:29:01 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow readies the charcoal at the top of the parchment having turned it over so the list is on the other side, ready to take dictation.
  94. [3:35:02 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Eucasia <Mallivaean>: If we see trade as collaboration, then it's likely that the Dominion and Oyashima had been working together since the Empire days. This country is a trading country and its rulers are merchants, if they find profit trading with the enemy, we can expect that they will. The Dominion does not care much for travel over water and force their vassals to transport them, so it's likely that the ships used to trade are Oyashiman, which makes
  95. [3:35:02 PM CDT] <[Cy]> interdicting them diplomatically difficult. The contents that have been listed out are innocuous enough, but it certainly isn't all that is being traded.
  96. [3:37:33 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne purses her lips.
  97. [3:38:08 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Marjolaine goes through the pages a second time. The words she knows, she translates to Coalition; the words she doesn't, she sounds out; and the words she can't, she leaves as "something". It turns out there are many "something"s on the page, and the sounded out words seem to be names, but not really anything that sounds Oyashiman.]
  98. [3:38:35 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Hrmm. We should get a full manifest of what is being traded, at least. Which document is the more recent one?
  99. [3:40:29 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Marjolaine: The list of crates looks newer.
  100. [3:40:49 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow smiles.
  101. [3:41:05 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Thank you, Marjolaine, this will be a big help.
  102. [3:46:01 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [The kids, feeling like their job here is done, hurry back to their room in the residence block.]
  103. [3:49:07 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> If the trade was entirely above board, then I don't know why these communications would have been clandestine. And I'm interested to know what this "something" is on the manifest, but if it's anything like the other items, it may not be any less innocuous than they.
  104. [3:51:11 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Perhaps it's what that other team encountered.
  105. [3:52:07 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> The crates that erupted in purple flames?
  106. [3:52:38 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Yeah. Those.
  107. [3:52:52 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne smirked.
  108. [3:53:15 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Imagine if the Dominion was smuggling in infiltrators in jars.
  109. [3:54:32 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Knowing the shapes they take, I wouldn't put it past them.
  110. [3:56:43 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Judging from this list, these are schedules of shipping entirely inside the Dominion, unless they've given Oyashiman ports names after their own fashion. I find that fact to be more worrying than anything.
  111. [4:00:31 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Eucasia <C>: These ports could be anywhere. Names they use may not be names the locals use. They could even be on Mulyond.
  112. [4:02:49 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> That's some relief, then. If we could try to tie these names to ports we know, that might be a good first step to trying to learn what they've been cooking up with these movements, but I'm not sure how we'd go about that. We may as well see if we can locate any shipments matching the description of the list of goods we have.
  113. [4:12:13 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne walks over to the table to get a better look at the transcribed documents. She peers over the list of items for anything of note.
  114. [4:13:08 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> So I suppose that's our first stop, wherever we can find shipping manifests. Hopefully, we'll be able to get a hold of those without any recourse to illicit means.
  115. [4:16:43 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> !roll 1d8 + 1 + 1d20 [INT DEX] looking at documents
  116. [4:16:44 PM CDT] <FeistyKaka> [110]_Hanne rolled: {3}=> 3 + 1 + {18}=> 18 = 22 "[INT DEX] looking at documents"
  117. [4:21:58 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Some of the sounded out words sound somewhat close to Mallivaean, and Hanne can make out "meat", "slaves", and "mercury" in the list of commodities.]
  118. [4:23:35 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne taps Meadow on the shoulder and points to the words on the documents.
  119. [4:25:32 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> This one says "meat", I think. This is probably "slaves". This one, uhh, is "mercury". Maybe.
  120. [4:26:15 PM CDT] * [Multi]_Meadow moves her attention back to the lists, watching where Hanne points.
  121. [4:26:22 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Oh, you can read this?
  122. [4:31:16 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Those words look similar to a script formerly used by the Dominion.
  123. [4:33:36 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Interesting. I don't know what to make of that, though...meat is rations for the slaves, who need to make something with the mercury? And the steel, maybe...Lamp oil, are they working at night? Or in a mine? And what does the sugar have to do with it? Assuming all this is related to each other...
  124. [4:37:23 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne straightens out her posture and folds her arms before looking at the others.
  125. [4:37:54 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Well, I think it's reasonable to assume these documents are authentic. What should be the next step?
  126. [4:40:32 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I would still like to see if any shipments matching any of these items have arrived in Oyashima in the time from around the arrival of this manifest to now.
  127. [4:46:07 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> In parallel, I'd like to know if there's any reason for the items on the manifest to be grouped together. Starting a sugar plantation? But then why the mercury? We should find someone who might be able to solve that riddle.
  128. [4:50:13 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Eucasia <C>: Who will you ask?
  129. [4:51:26 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> If there's no one here who can give us an answer, we'll have to seek elsewhere. First, with our Oyashiman allies, and then with any industrial experts whose ear we might bend.
  130. [4:53:56 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Horticulturists, perhaps, or miners, something of the like...
  131. [4:54:25 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> But we can start by showing this to any of the Wayward we can, to see if this looks familiar to them.
  132. [4:56:07 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: It looks familiar to me. It looks like a normal shipping list. Ships are large and carry many different types of goods. The things you carry in your pack when you travel, do you use all of them together for a single function?
  133. [4:58:37 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> It wouldn't be so convenient, would it? But then why send this manifest in particular here? I shudder to think that there be a Dominion operative here with enough responsibility to manage entirely internal Dominion affairs. Is the crown prince ordering materials wholesale?
  134. [4:58:59 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> ...But that's a good point; we should check his holdings to see what overlap there may be.
  135. [5:00:24 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: Did you forget that the second prince took these as blackmail? Why are you talking as if this was intentionally left for us to find? What evidence do you have of anything you're saying?
  136. [5:01:03 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Eucasia takes the documents and looks over everything once more.]
  137. [5:01:11 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> None! I'm grasping at straws!
  138. [5:01:34 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne rubs her temples.
  139. [5:01:46 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> I'm searching for any kind of evidence that might be useful to us, knowing this is information that has fallen randomly into our hands.
  140. [5:04:57 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> For now, I feel if the crown prince had fully gone over to the enemy we'd know it. Perhaps he, or someone in his camp, simply feels they can enrich themselves by dealing with the Dominion. Y'know, behind everyone else's backs.
  141. [5:05:24 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: The crown prince seems to run a vast trade network, and runs it well. It will likely not persuade any Oyashiman to accuse him of trading with the Dominion when it is so profitable that he maintains the trade for this long.
  142. [5:05:38 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [Eucasia sets the papers down.]
  143. [5:06:00 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: If we want to search, we search his holdings.
  144. [5:06:28 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> Yes, I agree that scandal will likely not be a weapon accessible to us. All that we know is that there's an element in his camp with regular ties to the Dominion trade network.
  145. [5:07:10 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> The strong Dominion against the war-torn Coalition; I can see the argument.
  146. [5:07:13 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne shifts her weight.
  147. [5:07:52 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Our raids against the other guy was one thing, but this is the crown prince. How would this play out?
  148. [5:13:13 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: We make the Dominion trade a problem for Oyashima. If the fires was caused by the usual Dominion hexes, our allies merely need to know to safely trigger each one whenever it is found. Alternatively, we frame the Dominion for the death or injury of a prominent person.
  149. [5:13:46 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne shrugs.
  150. [5:13:51 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Why not both?
  151. [5:16:30 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: We can do both if we can convince our hosts to threaten Oyashiman life and property in order to reveal the Dominion.
  152. [5:19:32 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> And play the scandal that way; not that a prince is tied to the Dominion, which is a benign fact unworthy of scandal; but that this trade is actively harmful to Oyashima, driving a wedge between the two nations.
  153. [5:22:15 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: They'll see it of course, but there's little they can do from the shadows. The enemy must commit their own people, making them easier to attack. Alternatively, we can watch the prince's reaction; unprofitable and damaging business would be dropped, but if he still holds on to trade with the Dominion, he is receiving something he cannot obtain otherwise.
  154. [5:23:27 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne nods.
  155. [5:23:30 PM CDT] <[Multi]_Meadow> But first, we'd have to engineer an incident damaging enough to warrant public backlash.
  156. [5:25:26 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Damaging his holdings I think is a good start. Once things start getting chaotic, the enemy will have to make a move and we can attack them easier.
  157. [5:25:36 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: You've seen Dominion hexes before, right? Draw some out for our hosts, they can start on that.
  158. [5:29:18 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Right.
  159. [5:29:32 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne turns to Rodyon.
  160. [5:29:53 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Uhh, Rodyon, if you don't mind.
  161. [5:30:37 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Rodyon: What, more paper?
  162. [5:31:10 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne nods.
  163. [5:33:36 PM CDT] <[Cy]> [He fishes out another sheet, unused, from a different pocket and smooths out the folds.]
  164. [5:36:04 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> Thanks.
  165. [5:37:42 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne smiles as she takes the paper from Rodyon and lays it onto the table. Picking up the charcoal that Meadow had used previously, she starts sketching out the lines of a Dominion hex.
  166. [5:40:19 PM CDT] <[110]_Hanne> I think it should be something like this.
  167. [5:40:35 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne finishes the sketch and holds up the drawing for the others to see.
  168. [5:41:00 PM CDT] <[Cy]> Rodyon: What if drawing one out makes it dangerous?
  169. [5:43:31 PM CDT] * [110]_Hanne glances over at the sheet.
  170. [5:46:43 PM CDT] <[Cy]> E <C>: Regardless, when Tapajiyou returns, we'll warn him of what happens when these are broken. Our hosts have expressed opposition to the Dominion so I expect that they will accept the costs of the collateral damage.
