  51. Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.
  52. The teenager Jarod invites his best friends Travis and Billy-Ray to have a foursome with a thirty-eight year-old woman. While driving to meet the woman, Travis hit a car parked on the road. When they meet the woman, she gives spiked beer to them and they pass out. When the three friends wake up, they find that they are trapped in the fundamentalist Five Points Trinity Church of the infamous Pastor Abin Cooper and that they will be killed. Meanwhile the church is under siege by ATF agents led by Agent Joseph Keenan that have been ordered to destroy the terrorist cell. Will the teenagers be saved by the agents of the law enforcement agency?
  53. I paid $1.06 at Redbox for this and asked for my money back. This was a puerile and pointless film. Doesn't anyone step back and look at these things before they are released? The plot was predictable, scenes were too long and the thesis was trite. I think that the mechanics of the industry are so inbred that each component, whether it's an actor, the caterer or the director goes through the motions without any real sense of what they are producing. Who invests in these failed efforts? I also wonder who the target audience is. As a genre is has no identity; it tries to be horror, political and allegoric and fails at every level. Finally it has no humor. An example of a successful director who can do all of the above is Rob Zombie. Is there really a slice of America that likes this garbage? Just stupid.
  54. I had the opportunity to see Red Statee on March 5th, 2011 at the Radio City Music hall screening followed by a Q&amp;A with Mr. Smith and cast of the movie. <br/><br/>I am very much a fan of Kevin&#39;s other work but after seeing the movie it&#39;s clear that this flick transcends his typical fan base. You do NOT need to be a fan of Kevin Smith to enjoy this movie or even know who he is. For starters it&#39;s not a comedy or a romance, it&#39;s a suspense/thriller/horror with a bit of psychological-ness thrown in the mix in regards to the family&#39;s religious fanaticism and how it shapes the characters. I would define this as a character driven film. There are a few action things going on but you really only care about that because you&#39;re intrigued by the multi-faceted characters.<br/><br/>Pros: -Great casting and acting. All of the actors, including the young boys, seemed to really understand their roles and pulled them off without a hitch. John Goodman is incredible along with Michael Parks. They really sell the part. -Interesting script. The story doesn&#39;t really unfold in the typical/expected way. By this I don&#39;t mean there a ton of &quot;m. knight shamamalanalanama&quot; twists, but rather the way the story progresses is slightly off-course from how you would expect it to go. -Engaging cinematography and editing. You can really tell that this movie was edited by someone who smokes (i.e. has a short attention span). Mr. Smith cut out every scrap of &quot;fat&quot; that would have slowed down the pace of the movie and it pays off. Additionally, the cinematography was everything you would want it to be. The majority of the movie is hand held but it&#39;s not distracting. They also do the thing where they switch to cameras mounted on the actors so you can see their perspective and it all just worked perfectly in pulling you into the flick.<br/><br/>Cons: -This wasn&#39;t an issue for me, but at times in the movie they go from &quot;incredibly serious/scary&quot; to &quot;im making sarcastic/inappropriate jokes.&quot; I could see this pulling some people out of the movie. <br/><br/>All-in-all this was a great, fun movie to watch. It is not overly gory and tells a very interesting story. Definitely check it out if you are a fan of good movies! Again, you do NOT have to be a Kevin Smith fan to dig it.
  55. This sloppily constructed horror-thriller lacks the satirical bite and action chops to skewer extreme-right-wing zealots with the gusto Smith clearly feels they deserve, instead evincing the verbal incontinence and slack tension that have long dogged the writer-director's work.
  56. Although it was initially suspected that it would be a slasher film, it is actually more like an action thriller. The horror is derived from real life hatred and the violence that people are capable of committing. Also unlike most slasher films, all violence and death in Red State is done with firearms. The movie however does feature numerous horror genre tropes where comparisons can be made between it and The Devil&#39;s Rejects and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is not based on an actual story but is inspired but various real life events. The villain is a composite of Fred Phelps, Jim Jones and other leaders of religious cults. The events of the story are also quite similar to the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco, Texas. During the shootout with the ATF and Five Points Church, the congregation&#39;s children are hidden in the attic. Later the teenage church member Cheyenne tells them to escape out the back and they are not seen in the film again. During many of Kevin Smith&#39;s Q&amp;A appearances for the film he has said that if you listen to the background audio there is the sound of children screaming in the distance soon after the scene when Cheyenne and Jared are killed. Smith said he intentionally chose not to reveal the exact fate of the children. Kevin Smith&#39;s first drafted ending for Red State was to have the climactic shootout at the church end when the true apocalypse begins: Trumpet blasts herald from the sky which turns blood red and is filled with angels, one of which impales Pastor Cooper with a flaming sword. Given the film&#39;s $5,000 special effects budget this ending was logistically impossible yet elements of it inspired the film&#39;s final ending. No. This movie is a stand alone story. It does not contain (ex: Jay and Silent Bob) any characters or overt references to previous Kevin Smith films. a5c7b9f00b
