  1. sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction and today i'm
  2. going to share three stories that demonstrate that but before
  3. we get into today's stories if you're a fan of
  4. the strange dark and mysterious delivered in story format then
  5. you come to the right channel because that's all we
  6. do and we upload three or four times every week
  7. so if that's of interest to you please offer the
  8. like button a bowl of chips and some guacamole but
  9. replace the guacamole with wasabi also please subscribe to our
  10. channel and turn on all notifications so you don't miss
  11. any of our weekly uploads alright let's get into today's
  12. stories [Music] so full disclosure this is not my personal
  13. story but in order to do this story justice it
  14. has to be told in the first person so i
  15. am simply an actor i was once on a u.s
  16. military ship in the wardroom which is the officer's lounge
  17. when the operations officer came inside this guy was the
  18. definition of not a morning person he was bleary-eyed he
  19. kind of stumbled in he was like a zombie holding
  20. a bagel he sits down in front of me he's
  21. barely conscious and he starts gnawing on his bagel and
  22. i'm sitting with my back to the outboard side of
  23. the ship so that's the outside of the ship behind
  24. me and there's a porthole right next to my head
  25. where the sun is coming through and it's hitting this
  26. officer directly on his face and so the officer's looking
  27. up at the sun he's kind of squinting and blocking
  28. the sun from his face and i'm looking at him
  29. expecting him to shift left or right to get out
  30. of the path of the sunlight but instead this officer
  31. slowly reaches for the phone on the wall he brings
  32. it up to his head and he goes yeah bridge
  33. yeah uh this is ops i need you to adjust
  34. our path yeah one five six yep that's about right
  35. okay all right all right bye after he hangs up
  36. with the bridge i'm watching him and he hasn't moved
  37. he's still just looking at the sunlight blazing in on
  38. his face he's just squinting and looking up at it
  39. and then all of a sudden this port of sunlight
  40. just gradually begins to shift off of him and winds
  41. up on the wall right behind him where it stops
  42. by ordering the bridge to change the ship's path just
  43. slightly about 15 degrees it's enough of a change to
  44. reposition the sun from his face he literally redirected thousands
  45. of tons of steel and hundreds of people just because
  46. he was too lazy to move left or right i'm
  47. in awe i can't believe he's just done this and
  48. for a second i worry that he won't realize how
  49. unbelievably brilliant this was and then as i'm looking at
  50. him in between bites he just looks up at me
  51. and smiles and goes back to eating his bagel [Music]
  52. in november of 2006 nintendo came out with a brand
  53. new gaming console called the wii and it was hugely
  54. popular and sold out almost completely right away by the
  55. following january it was still not on shelves in most
  56. places around the world and so people were going crazy
  57. spending unbelievable sums of money to try to get their
  58. hands on this system a sacramento california radio station called
  59. kdnd got a hold of one of these coveted systems
  60. and decided they would give it away during an on-air
  61. contest the contest was going to be called hold your
  62. wii for a wii and the premise of this contest
  63. was simple the contestants would be given lots of water
  64. and the person who held it the longest i.e they
  65. didn't urinate would win the prize leading up to this
  66. contest the radio station began promoting it really aggressively on
  67. air and lots of people called in with concerns saying
  68. that drinking too much water can actually be deadly but
  69. the station brushed these concerns off and said they were
  70. aware of them and that all contestants would be signing
  71. a waiver and so ultimately the station was not responsible
  72. for what happened to them on the morning of friday
  73. january 12th 18 contestants showed up at the kdnd radio
  74. station and they signed their waivers although one of the
  75. contestants said the waiver only covered publicity issues not health
  76. and safety concerns one of the contestants was 28 year
  77. old jennifer strange who was a mother of three and
  78. she was trying to win this wee for her kids
  79. she along with the others after signing their waiver were
  80. ushered into this room where they were handed eight ounce
  81. water bottles every 15 minutes they would be expected to
  82. finish that water bottle and then refill it and do
  83. it every 15 minutes and if at any point they
  84. didn't completely finish their water bottle in time or if
  85. they got up to use the bathroom they would lose
  86. the contest the contest started at 6 45 a.m and
  87. by 8 am after five bottles had been drank a
  88. number of the contestants began pulling themselves out to use
  89. the bathroom but the radio staff felt like this contest
  90. was gonna take a really long time until they gave
  91. the remaining contestants that included jennifer a larger bottle of
  92. water to drink from over the next several hours all
  93. of the contestants except for jennifer and one other had
  94. dropped out because it was just too painful they had
  95. to go to the bathroom jennifer was heard on air
  96. saying it hurt so much and one of the hosts
  97. laughed and said well do you need to lay down
  98. and then somebody piped up and said she can't even
  99. walk and so everybody just kind of laughed and did
  100. nothing about it around this time a nurse called into
  101. the radio station and very emphatically said what they were
  102. doing this contest was a really bad idea you're gonna
  103. get someone killed from water intoxication water intoxication is also
  104. known as water poisoning and in a nutshell what happens
  105. is when you drink too much water the water dilutes
  106. your bloodstream it can cause swelling in your brain and
  107. it can lead to coma and or death the host
  108. after hearing this concern turned and yelled to the remaining
  109. contestants hey is anybody dying out there and then the
  110. host just kind of laughed and hung up on the
  111. nurse a little while later you can hear one of
  112. the hosts on air comment on how jennifer's belly looked
  113. really strange it had become totally distended and bloated and
  114. they said it looked like she was pregnant at some
  115. point jennifer and the other remaining contestant began vomiting but
  116. instead of dropping out they just continued to drink more
  117. water and did not go to the bathroom but finally
  118. it became too much for jennifer to bear and she
  119. dropped out of the contest and she relieved herself for
  120. coming in second place she received tickets to a justin
  121. timberlake concert on her drive home jennifer began experiencing this
  122. horrific headache to the point where she was just sobbing
  123. uncontrollably through tears she called one of her co-workers and
  124. said she just was not going to be able to
  125. come into work that day her head hurt too much
  126. and so after she hung up her coworker she'd just
  127. spoken to was really concerned about her and called jennifer's
  128. mother to let her know what was going on and
  129. about an hour later jennifer's mother headed over to jennifer's
  130. house to check on her and she found jennifer dead
  131. in her bathroom from water poisoning the station was ultimately
  132. sued by jennifer's family and they were ordered to pay
  133. over 16 million dollars in damages in 2005 57 year
  134. old steven slevin was a physically healthy man but mentally
  135. he was struggling he was depressed and felt like his
  136. life didn't have any purpose anymore and so in august
  137. of that year he decided to just go on a
  138. road trip he didn't know where he was going he
  139. just felt like if i get out on the road
  140. and just go driving somewhere i will feel better and
  141. on this road trip he eventually began drinking alcohol and
  142. before long he was swerving along the new mexico highway
  143. and a police officer saw his erratic driving and pulled
  144. him over once stephen failed his sobriety test the police
  145. officer arrested him stephen was brought to a local detention
  146. center where during his booking process it was discovered that
  147. he had a history of mental illness and so the
  148. officers following that county's policy segregated him from the rest
  149. of the general population in an effort to protect stephen
  150. from himself they moved him into a padded cell on
  151. the first floor they removed all of his clothing and
  152. they put him in what's called a suicide smock which
  153. looks like a big blanket wrapped around your upper body
  154. and what it does is it keeps inmates warm and
  155. modest but it also prevents them from balling up their
  156. clothes and creating a noose they could hurt themselves with
  157. after a few days in this padded cell steven was
  158. moved to another better cell that had a window it
  159. had a shower it had a toilet and he was
  160. there for two weeks under strict medical observation but at
  161. the end of those two weeks for reasons that are
  162. not entirely clear steven this mentally unstable man was moved
  163. into solitary confinement to await trial for his dwi solitary
  164. confinement is a type of imprisonment where the inmate is
  165. shifted into a single person cell and they are kept
  166. there nearly around the clock without any significant interaction with
  167. other people or other inmates these psychological effects of solitary
  168. confinement are well documented and terrifying just 15 days into
  169. solitary can be enough to cause permanent psychological damage steven's
  170. first few weeks in solitary were actually okay he was
  171. allowed to write to his family he was able to
  172. detox and reflect on his life during those first few
  173. weeks it was noted that stephen was very polite in
  174. his very limited interaction with the officers that were dropping
  175. food off through the slot in his door also when
  176. stephen had a few minor medical issues instead of throwing
  177. a fit he just knocked on the inside of his
  178. door and waited patiently for someone to acknowledge him which
  179. took a long time but he never got frustrated or
  180. mad but by january of 2006 so roughly three months
  181. into his solitary stint stephen had not had any updates
  182. on when his case was going to go to trial
  183. and stephen was starting to lose his grip on reality
  184. he was having these severe panic attacks and he was
  185. suffering from intense hallucinations he desperately wanted to find out
  186. how much longer he was going to be kept in
  187. the cell but nobody would tell him he tried writing
  188. his letters to his family asking for help or asking
  189. them to try to get an update on his case
  190. but when he went to literally write the letter his
  191. hand shook so severely from the stress and anxiety that
  192. he literally couldn't write these letters starting that january stephen
  193. began spending the bulk of his day in the corner
  194. of his cell with his knees tucked up to his
  195. chest rocking back and forth he was allowed out of
  196. a cell a few times a month but in april
  197. of that year that stopped and he almost never left
  198. a cell again and without leaving his cell steven was
  199. unable to bathe and so his skin began developing fungus
  200. and began falling off and his teeth began to rot
  201. finally on may 8 2007 so one year and eight
  202. months of being in solitary confinement steven was transferred out
  203. of his cell to a behavioral institute in las vegas
  204. nevada after bathing and shaving and cutting his hair and
  205. receiving proper medical treatment he was back to his normal
  206. self within a couple of days and while he was
  207. there he had a chance to speak to a lawyer
  208. and the lawyer would say the entire meeting stephen was
  209. just saying where have i been and the lawyer said
  210. you know you've been in solitary confinement awaiting trial you've
  211. been there for almost two years and to that stephen
  212. was shocked and literally didn't believe him he actually couldn't
  213. remember that time in his life it was like it
  214. had driven him crazy and he had completely repressed it
  215. from his memory but when the lawyer told him about
  216. it it began to come back into his mind and
  217. he begged the lawyer to not let them send him
  218. back to solitary confinement and as lawyers said unfortunately if
  219. that's where they're going to keep you that's where they're
  220. going to keep you until you have your trial for
  221. this dwi and unfortunately we have no idea when that
  222. trial is going to be but stay strong because it's
  223. bound to be soon if they've already transferred you to
  224. this institute stephen stayed at this institute for two weeks
  225. and during that time he asked constantly about when his
  226. trial was going to happen but nobody knew and at
  227. the end of those two weeks stephen was abruptly taken
  228. out of his room put in a van driven back
  229. to new mexico and put back into his solitary confinement
  230. cell and immediately steven began to deteriorate then he begged
  231. the guards to not put him in the cell but
  232. nobody was listening and before long the door had shut
  233. and he was all alone again within a couple of
  234. days stephen developed an abscess in one of his teeth
  235. and he tried to get medical attention but he didn't
  236. get it and so he sat in the corner of
  237. a cell and for eight hours one day he rocked
  238. back and forth and violently twisted and yanked and pulled
  239. on that tooth until he was able to rip it
  240. out of his head almost two months later on june
  241. 22nd 2007 stephen's case was finally put before a judge
  242. and the judge dismissed all of the charges it's believed
  243. the judge found out about this horrible mistreatment of stephen
  244. and took pity on him but we'll never know three
  245. days later steven was released from jail and reunited with
  246. his family he had been in solitary confinement for two
  247. years without so much as a hearing to tell him
  248. what was going on he had essentially been forgotten about
  249. he would go on to sue the county and win
  250. 15.5 million dollars in damages however at the same time
  251. he's winning this case he was diagnosed with terminal lung
  252. cancer and given less than a year to live it's
  253. unclear if he is alive today so that's gonna do
  254. it guys if you found the secret in today's episode
