Seraphim Falls is a western which, ultimately, isn&#39;t a western at all.<br/><br/>It starts off with all essentials pared back to the bone - Pierce Brosnan is being pursued by Liam Neeson and several others through snowy forests. This first section is brutally realistic - you can feel the cold, share Brosnan&#39;s breathlessness and the effects of being shot: no mild wincing here.<br/><br/>The chase continues with the same relentlessness with which Schwarzenegger pursued Linda Hamilton in the first Terminator movie: no matter what he does (and he is highly resourceful) Brosnan cannot shake off Neeson. The audience is left imperfectly anchored, because the reason for the chase is not revealed: one&#39;s sympathies might rest with Brosnan as the one pursued and, perhaps, the perceived victim but, without knowing the reason for the pursuit, one can never be sure.<br/><br/>This chase forms the spine of the film, running from the very start until the very end, but the way in which the story is told shifts imperceptibly from the brutally literal to the metaphysically impressionistic. The first real inkling that something is going on which is unusual for a western comes when both main characters encounter Wes Studi at a water hole and then, when Angelica Huston turns up, it is clear that she is a dramatic device rather than a character.<br/><br/>The incident driving the pursuit is revealed late on and, while it doesn&#39;t really resolve with whom one&#39;s sympathies should rest, it illuminates the positions of both men.<br/><br/>Neeson and Brosnan are, as expected, both excellent, playing parts quite different to what we have come to expect from them. The film is always dazzlingly eye-catching, often deliberately contrasting beauty with ugliness to great dramatic effect.<br/><br/>This film is dressed up as a western, but isn&#39;t a western at all: it is an essay on the futility of bitterness. I&#39;m not sure I wholly agree with the points it makes, but it chooses an interesting and absorbing way of making them.
I will start with the cast. The actors are persons that played in a lot of good films, their acting is, let&#39;s say, above average, yes I have to agree, but unfortunately, this is the only good thing that I see about this movie. Storyline, twist, soundtrack, film editing, whatever, they are all crap. I am sorry to say this, I am a huge western enthusiast, but this movie doesn&#39;t have anything to do about western movies. It is just a mix of thriller, drama and action Hollywood cliché, that me, for example, I am bored of and hate them so much that I had some strong nerves to watch it till the end. <br/><br/>It simply does not meet any minimum requirement for me to rate it with a good mark, my final rating is 4.5, I gave it a 4 because a 5 would be too much for what it does. <br/><br/>I do not want to say that it totally wasted my time, even if I strongly feel it did, however, if it was not for the western climate in the movie (which is very very poor), I would have gave it no more than 2 as a rating, I am very serious.<br/><br/>I am not giving you any spoiler, so to conclude, I am saying this again: if you are like a big fan of an actor of the cast, or a fan of some crew members than go ahead, watch it, but if you are looking for a good western/action/drama/thriller/etc movie which has to meet some minimum requirements, I am kindly telling you DO NOT WATCH THIS !
Aside from spasms of brutal violence, however, there's nothing rousing or new here.
