  1. 4chan chess is a chess/shogi hybrid played on a 10x10 board with 13 different piece types. Every piece except the admin can promote, and every piece possesses a trait which enhances their power on the board. You win by capturing your opponent's admin.
  2.
  3. A piece may promote by moving into or out of one's promotion zone, which is the opponent's camp. White's promotion zone is ranks 8, 9, and 10; Black's promotion zone is ranks 1, 2, and 3.
  4.
  5. THE 'STANDARD' PIECES (letter for notation is in brackets):
  6.
  7. Admin (A): Your king. You lose if your opponent captures it. Moves one square in any direction and does not promote, but has three traits:
  8. Trait #1 - Once per game, if your admin and a /pol/ have not moved, and the space between them is empty, you may move your admin to the file adjacent to the /pol/ and swap the /pol/ over to the other side;
  9. Trait #2 - Admins have diplomatic immunity, and cannot be frozen or moved. It also cannot occupy the same square as an /n/.
  10.
  11. Anon: Anons are your pawns, they move 1 square forward (optionally 2 if it's their first move, both moves are non-capturing) and can capture one square diagonally forward.
  12. Trait - An anon cannot move 2 squares on its first move if it would end up horizontally adjacent to an opponent's anon. This is an improved version of chess' en passant rule.
  13. +Anon: Promoted anon. Can slide up to 2 squares in any direction (basically moves as a queen but only up to 2 squares). Does not possess the above trait.
  14. Trait - Anons cannot be frozen or moved.
  15.
  16. /tg/ (T): Your queen. Can move an unlimited number of squares in any direction.
  17. Trait - /tg/s can lift enemy pieces on top of themselves and then immediately drop them on any adjacent square. This can be used to displace pieces, remove check, or even to pass!
  18. +/tg/ (+T): Moves an unlimited number of squares in any direction, or can jump 2 squares in any direction.
  19.
  20. /k/ (K): /k/s are your bishops, they can move an unlimited number of squares diagonally. This means that they are restricted to half of the squares on the board.
  21. Trait - /k/s cannot be captured by any piece that is not within a 2-square radius of itself. Enemy /a/s and /pol/s ignore this trait.
  22. +/k/ (+K): Can move an unlimited number of squares diagonally, or move 1 square orthogonally.
  23.
  24. /mlp/ (M): These are your knights, they can move 2 squares vertically followed by 1 square horizontally or 1 square vertically followed by 2 squares horizontally. A (1,2) leaper.
  25. Trait - An /mlp/ can capture any piece that is orthogonally adjacent to it - without moving to capture it.
  26. +/mlp/ (+M): In addition to the move, they can move 3 squares vertically followed by 1 square horizontally or 1 square vertically followed by 3 squares horizontally. A (1,2)+(1,3) leaper.
  27.
  28. /b/ (B): /b/s have no move of their own.
  29. Trait - a /b/ mimics the move of the last piece played by the opponent. Does not copy traits except its own, e.g. opponent moves /k/, on your immediate next move your /b/s can move an unlimited number of squares diagonally but does not possess the /k/'s trait.
  30. +/b/ (+B): in addition to the above, can always move 1 square in any direction.
  31.
  32. /n/ (N): /n/s are your rooks, they can move an unlimited number of squares orthogonally.
  33. Trait - A friendly piece can occupy the same square as an /n/; when they do, both pieces become impotent, and cannot capture or promote. Moving an /n/ causes the piece on top to move with it. When it moves off of the /n/, both pieces can attack again. You can also promote the top piece on this move.
  34. +/pol/ (+N): in addition to the above, can always move 1 square diagonally.
  35.
  36. BACKROW PIECES (the 6 pieces on your first rank):
  37.
  38. /d/ (D): Moves 1 square in any direction.
  39. Trait - Upon its first capture, the /d/ absorbs the captured piece's move and can always move as that piece. E.g., you capture your opponent's /pol/, now your /d/ can move an unlimited number of squares orthogonally. Does not copy traits, only the move.
  40. +/d/ (+D): Gains the ability to move as a knight in addition to its regular move and its absorbed move (if it has absorbed anything). If it has absorbed something that can move as a knight, this promotion does nothing (because you can already move as a knight).
  41.
  42. /r9k/ (R): Can slide up to 2 squares in any direction.
  43. Trait - Capturing a piece causes the /r9k/ to fly into a fit of rage and move the maximum distance it can move from the square it is on, capturing any piece in its path. This means you can also use the /r9k/ to capture your own pieces e.g. at the start of the game, the /r9k/ can capture on the square c2 and will continue to b3, where it will stop. You capture your own /mlp/ and anon in the process, but you get the idea. You can alternatively checkmate yourself on move 1 by capturing your own admin with the /r9k/
  44. +/r9k/ (+R): Can slide up to 3 squares in any direction.
  45.
  46. /x/ (X): Moves an unlimited number of squares diagonally, but cannot capture.
  47. Trait - any enemy piece that is adjacent to the /x/ is immobilised until it moves away. Traits can still be used.
  48. +/x/ (+X): Moves an unlimited number of squares in any direction, but cannot capture.
  49.
  50. /v/ (V): /v/s can move 1 square orthogonally up to twice in a row, or capture anything 2 squares away from itself. You can only move or shoot - you can't move and then shoot.
  51. Trait: When capturing, does not move. This trait is identical to that of the /mlp/.
  52. +/v/(+V): Can move 1 square orthogonally up to three times in a row.
  53.
  54. /vp/ (P): Can move 2 squares vertically followed by 1 square horizontally or 1 square vertically followed by 2 squares horizontally. A (1,2) leaper. in addition to this, it can also jump 2 squares orthogonally. The movement pattern resembles a Poké Ball.
  55. Trait: Upon capturing a piece, it is not removed from play, and is instead placed into your hand. On any given turn, you can place that piece back onto any unoccupied square of the board as one of your own pieces. You may only store up to 6 pieces at a time - any piece captured with a full hand is removed from play as normal. anons cannot be dropped to give an immediate checkmate, nor can they be dropped on your last rank (they wouldn't have any move otherwise). In dropping an anon anywhere except your third rank, you forfeit the right to move it 2 squares on its first move.
  56. +/vp/ (+P): In addition to the above, can also move an unlimited number of squares diagonally.
  57.
  58. /sci/ (S): Moves 1 square orthogonally or jumps 2 squares in any direction.
  59. Trait: a /sci/ can drop a teleporter immediately after moving on the square it just vacated. 2 Teleporters of the same colour on the board connect, and any piece (Black or White) landing on one teleporter entrance will end up at the exit. You cannot promote a piece by teleporting to a square in the promotion zone. However, using a teleporter when the exit is blocked will cause the offending piece to be captured, even it it's a friendly piece. Think telefragging. A player can only make 2 teleporters per game, even if they have more than one /sci/.
  60. +/sci/ (+S): In addition to the above, can also jump 3 squares diagonally. This is useful for giving your teleporter entrances a wide berth, maximising their efficiency.
