  1. Her hearing was exquisite, and now pitched by
  2. hunger. Though her ears were only tiny ducts, they
  3. were, after milleniums of development, perhaps the
  4. most efficient hearing organs on earth.

  6. Each ear consisted of three chambers, and in each
  7. chamber was a calcified stone connected to hair-
  8. thin sensory nerves. In the low-frequency range, her
  9. hearing was better than the sonar operating on the
  10. great ships thrashing above.

  12. For detection of sounds so feeble and so low in
  13. frequency that a man or a porpoise could not have
  14. heard them, she had a lateral line of fine canals,
  15. filled with a watery solution, from her head along
  16. her flanks to the base of her tail. These wire-thin:
  17. channels, feeling instantly the slightest difference
  18. of pressure along her sides, could discern a slowly
  19. moving object a thousand feet away.
