Jaws- Hearing

Her hearing was exquisite, and now pitched by
hunger. Though her ears were only tiny ducts, they
were, after milleniums of development, perhaps the
most efficient hearing organs on earth.

Each ear consisted of three chambers, and in each
chamber was a calcified stone connected to hair-
thin sensory nerves. In the low-frequency range, her
hearing was better than the sonar operating on the
great ships thrashing above.

For detection of sounds so feeble and so low in
frequency that a man or a porpoise could not have
heard them, she had a lateral line of fine canals,
filled with a watery solution, from her head along
her flanks to the base of her tail. These wire-thin:
channels, feeling instantly the slightest difference
of pressure along her sides, could discern a slowly
moving object a thousand feet away.
