- May be a long read. Sorry in advance.
- Things to remember:
- • ADHD people are born ADHD, have always been ADHD, and will always be ADHD.
- • Generally speaking, the earlier you get treatment the better the results.
- • ADHD people may have similar experiences but symptoms can vary from person to person.
- • ADHD tends to run in families. I think this may be why some young people have trouble getting their parents to understand their struggles. They *do* understand but don't realize it's not normal and their coping mechanisms are not universal. Especially when it comes to kids.
- • It is not uncommon for ADHD to be comorbid with other disorders such as Autism or Bipolar Disorder.
- Self-diagnosis is valid (Not everyone has the privilege of being able to pursue a diagnosis.) but it should come from an honest place and be backed with as much evidence as you can gather. ADHD in particular can be difficult to self-diagnose because, on the surface, the symptoms are universally relatable.
- My advice is to not focus on your symptoms but where those symptoms are coming from. Honestly consider alternative explanations such as depression or even something like vitamin D deficiency. It's important to talk to a professional if you're able to. They are trained to handle these kinds of questions in a way that the average person may struggle to. Find someone who specializes in diagnosing ADHD if you're able to. Your doctor may be able help you as well.
- And remember, even if you aren't ADHD, your struggles are not invalid. You're just not ADHD.
