- Reduced pronunciation of 3rd person pronouns (p. 93)
- he -> ‘e
- him -> ‘im
- his -> ‘is
- her -> ‘er
- them -> ‘em
- Give him his book. -> Give ‘im ‘is book.
- Give them his book. -> Give ‘em ‘is book.
- Give them their books. -> Give ‘em their books.
- Give him their books. -> Give ‘im their books.
- In fast speech, ‘im and ‘em sound identical or nearly identical. Usually the context of the sentence helps you decide, but sometimes it is still unclear.
- ---
- You CANNOT remove the first sound if this word begins a sentence, comes after a comma, or is pronounced with stress.
- She didn’t want the book, but he did. - To show contrast, “she” and “he” probably both have stress in this sentence:
- “SHE didn’t want the book, but HE did.”
- We always pronounce the first sound in stressed pronouns.
- ---
- p. 94 part A - Write the reduced pronunciation of the pronouns if possible, then practice reading the paragraph out loud.
- ---
- Willy Walker Katz? / Will he walk her cats?
- ---
- p. 102 - Do you remember what these mean?
- ---
- Homework: Try to figure out the meanings of the idioms on p. 104 (Lesson 9)
- (Also continue paying attention to idioms you see or hear other people use in conversations, books, movies, TV shows, and music. Next week you will have to write a conversation using some of these idioms.)
