During the Vietnam War, a village that American forces are using to spy on the Ho Chi Minh Trail has its sacred elephant killed by the North Vietnamese Army because they were cooperating with the Americans. The villagers need an elephant for a ceremony that will occur within the week. Captain Sam Cahill, an easygoing man who is heading home, and his hotheaded replacement Captain TC Doyle scrounge up another elephant with the help of sneaky supply chief warrant officer David Poole, luckless farmboy Lawrence Farley, and short-timer Harvey Ashford, and transport it across South Vietnam to get it to the village on time, running into all sorts of transport problems, personality conflicts, and an NVA squad that wants the Americans out of the village.
To keep the loyalty of a village during the Vietnam war, a U.S. Army officer and his unit struggle to deliver it a live elephant.
The Vietnam War makes a really unorthodox setting for a Disney movie, but this movie goes along quite well, thanks to its performances. Danny Glover and Ray Liotta star as the leaders of a rag-tag American platoon in charge of guarding an elephant and its young Vietnamese trainer on a trip to one part of the divided country to another.<br/><br/>Because of its family-friendly base, OPERATION DUMBO DROP plays it<br/><br/>safe with it&#39;s war violence. But who says you need bloody, graphic action in order to make a good war-oriented film? As long as the<br/><br/>performances are stellar, the film wins. Case in point is OPERATION DUMBO DROP.
Leave it to Disney to try to make light of the Vietnam War. There was nothing even remotely funny or entertaining about anything that happened in Vietnam just as there is nothing of the sort going on right now in the Middle East. What will their next movie be about....a camel being dropped into Iraq surrounded by IED&#39;s? America needs to be more responsible about its portrayal of war in films. WAR IS HORRIBLE! There is just no excuse for trying to make it anything otherwise. I found this movie to be quietly pro-war. That is no surprise coming from the American Disney Corporation. America, and Americans, must strive to end all war right now and to stand up against any form of the arts that glorifies war or, in this case, makes light of it.<br/><br/>I was mildly entertained by the movie but the above are my thoughts upon seeing it.
