  1. Why my Pokémon Platinum Alt Main Magikarp+ run is NOT following the speedrun.com leaderboard rules for Alt Mains
  2.
  3. As an "official" leaderboard, clear rules must be enforced in order for runners to not "cheat" with the spirit of the category, which is about defeating the game **primarily** with another Pokémon than the currently fastest one. The ruleset, as of August 2023, contains this :
  4. 1) If you can acquire your Alt Main Pokémon before defeating Gardenia, you must do so. If not, you must acquire your Alt Main with the lowest amount of badges possible.
  5. 2) After obtaining your Alt Main Pokémon and defeating Roark, your Alt Main must be used against every Pokémon that is defeated henceforth. Generally speaking, this means if experience is given, it should be able to receive some naturally. (i.e. without the Exp. Share)
  6. 3) Your Alt Main must defeat the majority of Pokémon defeated throughout the entire run.
  7.
  8. In my run, Magikarp is acquired at level 15 just before Gardenia Gym, and is trained via switching in specific battles and on specific opponents, until level 17 is reached. The optimized way i came up with is by splitting experience against Caroline's and Angela's Roselias, Gardenia's Cherrim and Roserade, and Jupiter's Zubat and Skuntank. This means i don't split experience neither against Caroline's Cherubi, Jenna's three Budews nor Gardenia's Turtwig, thus breaking rule 2. By doing so, i provide enough experience to Makikarp to reach level 17, i then use three Rare Candies to obtain level 20 and evolve into Gyarados. Note that defeating the five currently skipped opponent pokémon wouldn't provide enough experience to skip one of the three Rare Candies acquired.
  9.
  10. This is an example of a case where the spirit of the rules is respected (the main Pokémon used throughout the run is indeed Magikarp and its evolutionary line), but scrupulously respecting the ruleset would lead to a suboptimal route. When such a situation arises, i see three possible scenarii :
  11. a. You follow the leaderboard ruleset, and it leads to a better route. This is a win-win.
  12. b. You follow the leaderboard ruleset, but it leads to losing time compared to the previous route.
  13. c. You don't follow the leaderboard ruleset, and keep the optimized route.
  14.
  15. I decided to go with the third option. I started speedrunning to go as fast as possible while following a coherent sets of rules for a given run, and point b is not part of my mentality. While the rules 1-3 are perfectly acceptable for a general leaderboard framework, i felt like they were going against my initial goal, initial goal that i just stated. Rules are always partly arbitrary, and i tend to think rule 2 is the most arbitrary way of enforcing the essence of Alt Main categories that rule 3 represents.
