- Question types on the listening section:
- main idea - “what is the main idea” “what are they mainly discussing”
- detail - factual information questions about important, relevant details
- purpose - Questions about why they are having this discussion or what the purpose of the lecture is.
- inference - Usually include words like “imply”, “infer”, or “probably”.
- function - This is what I called “rhetorical purpose” yesterday. Questions about why a speaker says a specific thing. (You will hear audio from the listening during these questions.)
- attitude - about the opinion of one of the speakers
- organization - questions about how something fits into the rest of the listening passage
- connecting content - complete a table putting ideas in the correct category or categories based on the listening

- Listen again to the classroom discussion and answer the questions.
- 12 A (not D because it’s not the main topic, though they do talk about both internal and external messages. not B because, again, it’s not the main topic even though etiquette is mentioned. not C because letters and emails are never compared)
- 13 C (not B, because it might be the same business)
- 14 B (they disagree with each other, not the professor, but we don’t know if they exchange any emails with each other, so it’s also not C)
- 15 B
- 16 C (group messages aren’t personalized)
- 17 A and B
