  1. >Leni's doing the dishes.
  2. >It's her job after lunch on Tuesdays, after all.
  3. >She's humming away, standing on her little stool to reach the sink.
  4. >Being eleven, she's taking this new responsibility in stride.
  5. >Humming to herself, she places another clean, shiny plate onto the rack when she feels a tug on her dress.
  6. >Looking down, she sees Lincoln staring back at her.
  7. >"Hi Lincoln," she greets, digging out a fork from the water. "I'll be a little while longer before we can play, Ok?"
  8. >Humming to herself again, Leni finishes another plate before feeling another tug on her dress.
  9. >"Linc, I told you, I'll be a few minutes," Leni chides, putting on her mom voice. "Go wait in the living room, I don't think anyone's using the-"
  10. >Lincoln silently raises his arms up, flexing his small fingers.
  11. >A lightbulb goes off in the sister's head.
  12. >Drying her hands, she leans down so she's face to face with her brother.
  13. >"Huggy time?" she asks softly.
  14. >He nods eagerly.
  15. >Clicking her tongue, Leni pets his hair before standing up again.
  16. >"I have to finish the dishes, but after that, huggy time for sure. Ok?"
  17. >Lincoln nods, turning and walking out of the kitchen.
  18.
  19. >The last plate settles into the rack with a clatter, shiny and clean.
  20. >Finally done, Leni dries her hands and goes into the living room.
  21. >Lincoln sits on the floor, mere feet away from the TV.
  22. >"Linc," Leni scolds, tapping his shoulder, "Mom said you shouldn't be so close. It's bad for your eyes."
  23. >Lincoln turns to look at her, glancing at the couch, then at her again.
  24. >Leni hops down onto the couch, patting her lap as she gets comfortable.
  25. >"Come on, huggy time."
  26. >Lincoln gets up and approaches his sister, struggling to climb the couch before she helps him up.
  27. >He then calmly sits in her lap, wraps his arms around her back, and plants his face in her neck.
  28. >Leni scoots down a little further, mostly to give him a little more room to recline, and a bit to move his arms higher, against her shoulders.
  29. >She's always been a little ticklish.
  30. >Nuzzling his hair, Leni calmly rubs her little brother's back as she struggles to think of a lullaby for him.
  31. >He's quickly becoming dead weight, but it's the principle of the matter.
  32. >"Twinkle, twinkle, little star," she whispers.
  33. >There we go.
  34. >"How I wonder what you are..."
  35. >She can feel Lincoln's tiny hands clench her dress, balling into little fists before letting go.
  36. >She can feel his breathing slow down.
  37.
  38. >Leni pauses for a second, trying to remember the rest of the poem.
  39. >Luna remembers the lines better than her.
  40. >"Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky."
  41. >Lincoln mumbles softly into her neck, and lifts up slightly to put his feet under his legs.
  42. >"When the blazing sun is gone, when the nothing shines upon..."
  43. >Leni pauses to adjust her posture as well, propping up one leg against the couch.
  44. >She kisses his head.
  45. >His hair is so soft.
  46. >"In the dark blue sky you keep, and often through my curtains peep..."
  47. >Wait.
  48. >Leni furrows her brow, in thought.
  49. >No, she missed a bit.
  50. >Dang.
  51. >Ah well, he won't notice.
  52. >"For you never shut your eye, 'till the sun is in the sky."
  53. >Lincoln wiggles in her lap, his grumbling practically silent.
  54. >Leni places another couple to his head, stroking his hair while gently shushing him.
  55. >When he calms down, she continues.
  56.
  57. >"As your bright and tiny spark, lights the traveller in the dark..."
  58. >Lincoln breathes deeply, his little chest puffing out.
  59. >He holds in the air for a moment.
  60. >Then lets out in a heavy, resigned sigh.
  61. >Leni can feel his hands drop from her shoulders, and his weight fully press against her.
  62. >Humming softly, she gives him a moment to settle into his sleep.
  63. >Then, pushing slowly and carefully with her leg, she rotates and slides down, laying down on the couch with her brother cradled in her arms.
  64. >Settling down with her head on the armrest, Leni finishes the last of the poem.
  65. >"Though I know not what you are, Twinkle, twinkle, little star..."
  66. >Lincoln snores in applause, fully asleep.
  67. >Leni reaches behind her head, fumbling for the remote.
  68. >"Looking for this?"
  69. >Leni cranes her head up, looking to see who it is while trying not to disturb Lincoln.
  70. >"Lori, shh," she whispers, a finger to her lips. "He just fell asleep."
  71. >"I saw," Lori whispers back drily.
  72. >She turns off the TV before continuing.
  73. >"He's already too old for this. You can't keep babying him like this, Leni."
  74. >"I...I know," Leni mumbles, hugging Lincoln a little tighter.
  75. >Lori watches them for a second, then sighs.
  76. >"I'm just...look, I know you love this as much as he does, but he has to grow out of this someday. You know that."
  77. >She doesn't answer, hiding her face in his hair.
  78. >Lori drops the remote, the thump muffled by the carpet.
  79. >She turns to leave, but not before saying one last thing.
  80. >"Don't sleep all day, alright? We still have homework."
  81. >"I won't," Leni mumbles back, still hugging the slumbering Lincoln.
  82.
  83. >Now alone, Leni thinks on what Lori said.
  84. >He's not too old.
  85. >He's just a little kid.
  86. >He still needs her and the others to look out for him when Mom's out or busy with baby Lucy.
  87. >She looks down again and takes stock of her brother.
  88. >His soft face twitches now and again, and his hands flex and curl with him.
  89. >What does he dream about?
  90. >He looks so at peace...
  91. >Leni lays her head back, letting out a small yawn herself.
  92. >She doesn't know why, but this routine always calms her down and makes her forget her worries.
  93. >He's heavy enough for her to feel his weight, but just enough to enjoy his presence.
  94. >He's just warm enough to simulate a heavy blanket.
  95. >She hums tunelessly again as she strokes his arm.
  96. >His skin is so soft...
  97. >Leni doesn't realize her eyelids growing heavy.
  98. >She kisses his head one last time before her eyes shut, herself slipping into dreams.
  99. >Unconsciously, she pulls him closer to her.
  100.
  101. >An hour later, Lori comes back downstairs, her homework finished.
  102. >Turning the corner, she stops when she sees the napping siblings.
  103. >Creeping closer, she watches them silently, their chests rising and falling.
  104. >Lincoln had rolled over onto his back sometime after she left, clutching Leni's wrists, with her arms wrapped protectively around his chest.
  105. >Lori can't help but admit that they look happy together.
  106. >It reminds her of when she did a similar thing for Lynn, when she was afraid of the dark.
  107. >She misses that.
  108. >Lori sighs, and gets to work.
  109. >Carefully unclasping the two nap pals, Lori kisses Lincoln's forehead before hoisting him up, cradling him in a bridal carry as she escorts him to his room.
  110. >Returning with a pillow and blanket, she briefly watches Leni fuss and whimper in her sleep before enacting step two.
  111. >Even when she's deep asleep, Leni can tell when Lincoln's gone.
  112. >Gently placing the pillow on her chest, Lori lets Leni latch onto it, clutching tightly to her before Lori drapes the blanket over her.
  113. >A moment later, Leni's murmurs die down and her face relaxes again.
  114. >Lori kneels down, gently pressing her lips to her sleeping sister's cheek.
  115. >"Good dreams, Leni," she whispers, creeping back out and up the stairs.
  116. >Leni murmurs back, whispering nonsense in her sleep.
  117.
