Detective Azuma is a Dirty-Harry style rogue cop who often uses violence and unethical methods to get results. While investigating a series of drug-related homicides, Azuma discovers that his friend and colleague, Iwaki, is supplying drugs from within the police force. After Iwaki is murdered and Azuma's sister is kidnapped, he breaks all the rules to dish out his particular form of justice.

Takeshi Kitano is a superb director, with his own uncompromising vision. The sure sign of a true artist. The violence in this film is shocking and often appears from nowhere, a typical Hollywood conditioned viewer may be get disturbed from the rule breaking of Kitano movies. The pace is slow, but it just makes this film more intense. Kitano plays himself unemotionally and literally, like in all of his films. The relationship between the police and his sister adds special grit to this fine film.
I finally saw this movie over ten years after its release.  I never heard of it, or "Beat" Takeshi Kitano for that matter, until I saw "Violent Cop," despite the fact that I am a devout Asia file.  I was blown away by the film's in-your-face violence and brilliant filmmaking (Kitano is also the director).  It combines old-fashioned action with a Japanese film nior. Kitano is an incredible find, a combination of Toshiro Mifune, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen and Harvey Keitel.  I must admit I was somewhat disappointed to find out the film came out eleven years ago; I was hoping that I found a man who was not afraid to play a bad-ass character in a bad-ass movie in a time when political correctness is choking us.  Nevertheless, I was happy to see such a refreshing film on the video store shelves.  The surrealistic ending doesn't quite fit within the no-nonsense context of the film, but it is a very passable flaw.  A definite must for Asian film fans, action aficionados and film connoisseurs alike.
