I've got no idea how trained the militia are or whether they have aura or not. He had to assume not on the last one, or they could surely have dealt with the Grimm themselves.

That did not make the situation easier though. If anything, it made it all the harder.

He could attack people with aura. He could fight them, because at the end of the day he didn't have to worry about accidentally hurting them. Not the case here, since even the smallest misstep with Crocea Mors might end with him standing above the body of an innocent.
