  1. This was definitely a difficult course and I would not take it as an easy distro. This class was not an overview of neuroscience, but rather focused heavily upon very specific research./Professor Routtenberg is doing some interesting research on Alzheimer's Disease, which you will learn about. What you will not learn, however, is most things you think you should learn in a neuroscience class. (This is a not a broad overview type course even though it should be). He will probably also not explain things well, refuses to post powerpoint slides on blackboard and will ramble off-topic a lot. Hopefully you will have a good TA, in which case the course isn't the end of the world. The class is survivable, but not particularly fun and you probably won't learn much of anything. Don't let the thousands of dollars you pay the university go to waste; take something else./Routtenberg is quite boring and is all over the place. He's a genius, but not the greatest instructor./Learned some material mostly focused on learning and memory. Exams aren't that bad, but go to TA office hours and review sessions. Would not recommend./Energy should be invested in learning information and expanding on that because you are engaged in your courses. It should not be spent, as too often was in this course, on working outside of class to understand the basics to avoid failure./Routtenberg teaches what he is interested in rather than a survey you might expect in an intro class. This is a bio class so don't let the PSYCH categorization fool you. Three non-cumulative midterms each worth 15% of your grade and one cumulative final worth 55% of your grade. All exams are essay format, graded on a curve. Lectures are extremely important and attendance can boost your final grade. Having a good TA will make or break your understanding. Go to any and all review sessions. Overall, if you are good at memorizing concepts and vocab and applying them to new situations, you will do fine so long as you have a TA who can clear things up./It taught us the basics of neuroscience and showed us some of the larger themes in the field./I am very interested in the material but do not see myself pursuing a career in the subject/This was an awful experience. I am extremely interested in neuroscience and this course almost turned me off from it. I wanted to like it so badly but there was nothing to it. There was little to no instruction and the midterms were stupidly hard. We would learn almost nothing and then be expected to know every detail. Someone has got to change this course dramatically./Professor Routtenberg is smart and knows a lot, but he is not good at conveying what he knows to the class. In lectures, he tends to ramble and go on tangents, and it is often difficult to tell what we were supposed to take away from each lecture. He is also unresponsive to e-mails. The TA basically had to teach us everything we were supposed to know in the review sessions before the tests. Although the subject matter of this class is interesting, I would not recommend taking this class with Professor Routtenberg teaching it. If you do decide to take it, do NOT fall behind on the reading. It's a lot, and it's important not to fall behind on it, because Professor Routtenberg doesn't explain much of the reading material, but instead throws out terms from it during lecture without defining them, which makes the lectures even more difficult to follow than they already are if you haven't done all the reading. P.S. When he says that an article is required, he means it. Reading just the textbook isn't enough./I wish I had learned more basic things about Neuroscience. It would have made the class WAY less confusing for me. Don't take it unless you have a basic understanding of the brain's anatomy./This course was not an intro level course/I entered this class having read the previous CTECs, and all of them negative. Unfortunately, they were all right. Professor Routtenberg cherrypicks topics/There is definitely some interesting material, but it was very specified so it isn't very good as an intro to neuroscience. The professeor can be VERY difficult to listen to and talks a lot about his own research./This class has poor teaching; the TA was the only way that we were able to learn. I wouldn't recommend this class to anybody. It was simply confusing and stressful, and my least favorite part of my week./I loved Professor Routtenberg (very funny and quite amusing) but the course itself was quite a challenge. The atmosphere was quite dull at times and the material given in lectures was not always clearly connected or comprehendible. Powerpoint slides used were not always helpful in understanding the material and the diagrams/pictures used were generally more confusing than helpful in the end./I wanted a bit broader knowledge about neurosciences. There is no doubt that I learnt a lot about the neurological representation of brain though./This is not an easy-A class. I thought the professor could've done a LOT better job. His powerpoint presentations will confuse you so much. It's quite a terrible thing to sit through lecture when you are confused for 1 hr and 20 min two times a week. Don't make my mistake and choose another class please. It's also really annoying to have a professor who thinks he's all that and makes you feel unwelcome./I am still interested in learning about neuroscience, but I would not recommend this class to anyone./The course was good for students who already had a firm understanding of neurobiology and who wanted to add upon that. As someone new to the subject, it was not a very helpful course for me in gaining a good understanding of the subject. I would recommend it only to those majoring in psychology who have a particular interest in the science behind it.
