  1. <Vern|GM> Starborn.
  2. <Vern|GM> Saa can hear the voices of the sky. The spark in his eyes moves with his glance up.
  3. <Vern|GM> The steps on the beaten roads echo through the empty night. When the stars are the brightest, the people hide in their homes.
  4. <Vern|GM> Not so the Starborn, who are left without homes. They're 'the gift to the world'. Abandoned as early as possible, and sent out to fight in the night. Tiring is not something they do.
  5. <Vern|GM> Eventually, all Starborn have to enter the city of light, however, and receive a place to find their beginning and their end.
  6. <Vern|GM> Most Starborn don't live very long. Every time one dies, another takes his place.
  7. <Vern|GM> A shooting star blinded Saa for just a moment and crashed nearby. An-Lumen was still a few days by foot away - there should be someone here. Another Starborn taking care of it. Though the screams of the people made it obvious that the star crashed near a village or worse, in one. ||
  8. <Nick|Saa> Saa quickly heads towards the site of the crash. He can't let the gods' beasts roam unchecked, especially if they threatened innocents. He shakes his head as he jogs, once again internally cursing his fate that he should be responsible for the beasts. He had never wanted to save people, to fight monsters, but he couldn't do nothing. Not when he was so much more capable than others.
  9. <Nick|Saa> He hopes another one will have arrived before him, but he doesn't count on it. ||
  10. <Vern|GM> He screams.
  11. <Vern|GM> He, being the Starborn under the paws of the giant golden bear.
  12. <Vern|GM> It's a majestic beast. Disgustingly so. It's very appearance was heavenly, the old images of the good gods is long gone.
  13. <Vern|GM> "Though it is to my utmost regret," the bear said in a deep baritone. "I will not sway from my path, Starslayer. I will take your life, like you have taken those of my brothers and sisters. Someone will come and take my life, eventually."
  14. <Vern|GM> "You speak too much," the dying Starborn says, stabbing at the bear with his last breath. The golden bear's shoulder is cut open wide by the stab, but it isn't enough.
  15. <Vern|GM> The bear seems to be unaware of Saa's presence. The 'hushed oath' makes him almost completely silent in his every movement. ||
  16. <Nick|Saa> The dying Starborn was an unfortunate casualty of the encounter, but Saa hopes that his presence should draw away the attention of the bear. Saa slinks up to the glowing animal, and readies his maul over his shoulder. As he gets within striking range, he swings it with all his might, aiming to crush the beast's head. He's not so optimistic as to expect one blow to end the bear, not if it managed to take down another Starborn, but any creature should be bothered by a spiky iron ball swung at high speed impacting its head. ||

  19. <Vern|GM> The impact knocks the bear away. The spark explodes in Saa's eyes, revealing the blinding soul of the bear, and his name.
  20. <Vern|GM> Ursa Minor. One of the lesser bears.
  21. <Vern|GM> Howling in pain, the bear swings his body around to face Saa, its face twisted in anger. "Backstabbing monster, Starslayer savages, the lot of you."
  22. <Vern|GM> The village is still around, luckily. The houses still standing. And Saa can see the fearful eyes glancing out from inside the homes.
  23. <Vern|GM> Eyes fearing the Starborn and the Star both. Luckily, the strike seems to have dazed the bear long enough to avoid it from striking back immediately. ||
  24. <Nick|Saa> Saa keeps his face steady. He can't address the bear's insult, but he internally comments on its hypocrisy as he skips backwards, several steps away from the Star, hoping to keep the conflict away from the dying Starborn and the village.
  25. <Nick|Saa> He lifts his maul with one hand and beckons the bear away with the other. Any fallout of the fight should happen away from third parties. ||
  26. <Vern|GM> "Hmph," the bear grunts. "Perhaps I've underestimated you. I'll consider burying you when I'm finished."
  27. <Vern|GM> The bear opens his mouth, and for the first time since Saa set eyes on him the bear actually sounded every bit like the animal it looks like.
  28. <Vern|GM> The loud growl is accompanied by a large light that gathers and shoots forward like an arrow.
  29. <Vern|GM> One of the houses is behind Saa. Just jumping out of the way is dangerous. The bear is not stupid, it knows why most Starborn fight. ||
  30. <Nick|Saa> Saa snorts. His gesture was in no way meant to gain respect from the beast. His expression of derision is cut short when the bear releases the light. Saa briefly considers dodging, and letting the villagers deal with the consequences. They never had to fight these creatures. What right did they really have to be protected?
  31. <Nick|Saa> Then reason catches up to him, and he swings his maul at the light like a bat, hoping that the weapon would either redirect the odd projectile or at least take the brunt of the impact. ||
  32. <Vern|GM> The maul takes most of it. It cracks, but still holds strong.
  33. <Vern|GM> Unfortunately, the impact lifted Saa from the ground as the beam is thrown into the air, creating an explosion of golden under the star-lit sky.
  34. <Vern|GM> Flying through the air, his back impacts on the house he protected. The pain from that is even worse than the one in his arms from fighting the star's attack with a normal weapon.
  35. <Vern|GM> Sliding down the wall, Saa's legs touch the ground, his knees shaking.
  36. <Vern|GM> ||
  37. <Nick|Saa> Saa might have underestimated his opponent, but there was no way he could turn back now. He had rushed in knowing that the bear was strong, and had opted to take the mysterious light blast directly.
  38. <Nick|Saa> Saa thinks for a moment. He can't fight the Star at range, not here. He might fair better in close combat, but there's only one way to be sure.
  39. <Nick|Saa> He steps forward, slower than he'd like, his body groaning in pain. He points at the bear, and then hefts his maul. The thing had really not liked that first blow. Saa picks up the pace, ignoring his aching back, and approaches the Star, maul held high.
  40. <Nick|Saa> He swings, not caring where the blow lands. ||
  41. <Vern|GM> The bear shouts again and energy gathers in its mouth. Too late.
  42. <Vern|GM> In an incredible display of strength and speed, Saa appears as if aided by the wind. The maul shatters, turning into a heavenly golden and white version of itself.
  43. <Vern|GM> Hitting the bear's head made it crack. The mouth snapped shut, the teeth shattered, the energy gathered in it and exploded. The bear's body turned into dust, sparkling rather than bleeding.
  44. <Vern|GM> As it faded away, the dust clings to Saa's weapon and vanishes in it. The fight ends as suddenly as it starts.
  45. <Vern|GM> A star in the sky vanishes and appears again. The gods are patient. They can keep replacing the stars. And the humans can keep making children.
  46. <Vern|GM> Though the threat is gone, the people are still inside their homes. All that remains is the corpse of the Starborn in the middle of the village, his sword lying next to him. ||
  47. --> Gundor (gundor@netadmin.parahumans.net) has joined #DamnitVern
  48. <Nick|Saa> Saa walks to the dead body. The other Starborn's fight had ended. Saa examines his corpse and sword. ||
  49. <Vern|GM> The young man looks barely older than Saa. His dirty, bloodied hair is sprawled all over his still open eyes and the ground, his face frozen in a grin towards the heaven. The sword has a golden line moving through its blade like weaved, not too different from the maul's shade. ||
  50. <Nick|Saa> It's a shame that the Star had taken a Starborn so young, but he would be replaced soon enough, by another unwitting child with no idea what he or she were in for.
  51. <Nick|Saa> Saa takes a precursory glance around, to see if a graveyard is within immediate vision. ||
  52. <Vern|GM> There isn't. Considering how close this place seems to be to An-Lumen, they probably bring their corpses there to be purified. Carrying him and his sword there isn't really an option, though. Instead, Saa sees a hill not too far from the village. ||
  53. <Nick|Saa> Saa takes the dead slayer and his sword to the hill, moving slowly so as not to aggravate his sustained injuries, and performs basic rites before burying him, silently honoring his deeds, a subset of the Starborns' deeds as a whole. Without the other Starborn, Saa (and the rest of humanity), would have even less chance of survival. ||
  54. <Vern|GM> The wind whispers and the stars twinkle.
  55. <Vern|GM> A Starborn dies, and somewhere the a child cries as it takes its first breaths.
  56. <Vern|GM> An-Lumen. The city where people are baptised and sent to fight for the sake of those who shun them.
  57. <Vern|GM> Saa keeps moving. ||||

  79. <Vern|GM> By the time Saa reaches An-Lumen, his wounds are healed. Though he had been battered and thrown around like a doll in the hands of a trantruming child, the spark seems to help with those injuries.
  80. <Vern|GM> There are no guards. No gate. Where nature ends and the city begins, with their towers that touch the sky as if to spite the god's domain, there are only streets.
  81. <-- JulesVern (Kanaan@net-9k4b7o.pools.vodafone-ip.de) has quit (Ping timeout: 181 seconds)
  82. <Vern|GM> Saa sees people walk in and out, though none pay him attention. That is fine. His destination, as far as he knows, was the largest tower, Babel, in the city's middle. ||
  83. <Nick|Saa> Saa continues into the depths of the city, looking around at the scenery of the big city. He especially pays attention to the people, trying to figure out something about the rest of the people here. ||
  84. <Vern|GM> It seems that the reason nobody pays attention isn't entirely on their disinterest.
  85. <Vern|GM> The hushed oath makes his steps silent. His appearance dismissive.
  86. <Vern|GM> And to be dismissed.
  87. <Vern|GM> Yet, Saa could see it. The spark, in everyone's eye, and their weapons shining in golden lights. Some stronger than others, not many look as bright as his maul. ||
  88. <-- Mishie (chatzilla@net-jkl0r8.bigpond.net.au) has quit (Ping timeout: 181 seconds)
  89. <Nick|Saa> Ah, of course. Saa hasn't ever been able to test his oath against such a crowd, but it seems it holds up admirably. He figures that the other Starborn in the city also have oaths, visible or invisible. Something to keep in mind. Saa remembers the bear, and thanks his luck that he had been fast enough to get that last hit in.
  90. <Nick|Saa> He continues towards Babel, picking up the pace, confident in his oath to keep him out of trouble. ||
  91. <Vern|GM> The Tower of Babel. Named after the old Church that the gods had struck down, standing again, even taller than before.
  92. <Vern|GM> Saa's eyes hurt as he gets closer, the brightess too much until he finally steps into the building.
  93. <Vern|GM> Just as someone walks out. A wide man with a greying beard. The most striking thing about him, however, is the lack of weapon. Saa crashes into him, too late to get out of the way and falls down. The man blinks, looking down in confusion.
  94. <Vern|GM> "Ah, my bad," he said, finally noticing the young Starborn. He bends down, stretching his hand forward. "I don't think I've seen you around, let me help you up." ||
  95. <Nick|Saa> Saa accepts the help, checking for the spark in the man's eyes. If he were Starborn, his weapon might be something hidden, or something magical. Saa has heard of such things. He nods reverently in thanks. ||
  96. <-> Ellardy is now known as EllardyAway
  97. <Vern|GM> The man's spark is brighter than anyone Saa has ever put eyes on.
  98. <Vern|GM> His eyes flash occasionally, like a warning sign towards the Stars not to descend when he is there. That man is old. Old and strong.
  99. <Vern|GM> His grip is firm, and he hauls Saa up with so much force that the young man nearly falls forward once more, only stopped by another firm hand on his shoulder.
  100. <Vern|GM> "You'll want to speak to the man at the board there, he'll guide you through the whole spiel," the man said, grinning slightly. "Welcome to An-Lumen, hushed one." ||
  101. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods again, and smiles, before heading to the indicated man. He gives a brief wave as the older Starborn departs. ||
  102. <Vern|GM> "Welcome to Babel," the man says. "I see you've met Orion, quite the person, isn't he?"
  103. <Vern|GM> Not waiting for Saa's answer, the man slaps his hand onto the board. "You're new, but... hm, what's up with that thing on your back? Is that your weapon?" ||
  104. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods in response, and then takes out his maul, showing the man. Saa saw the various amounts of gold and white glow that the other Starborns weapons had, and he supposes that the man might be surprised at how bright his maul already is. ||
  105. <Vern|GM> "You killed one already," the man says, slightly awed. "I'm known as Pete. I usually take care of the things when Orion is out, so I take care of sending you out to guard populated places. You'll receive a home and money, and by the order of the God of Light, nobody can refuse you service lest they wish to wage ware against the holy city."
  106. <Vern|GM> Saa knows most of it already, though the man confirms most of the facts he learned over the past few years.
  107. <Vern|GM> "Usually we send you to small villages and the like until we send someone to replace you, but you're already further than others. A weapon that bright is wasted fighting the small stars - wait, did I ask for your name yet? I'm sorry, uh...?"
  108. <Vern|GM> The man expects Saa to speak. ||
  109. <Nick|Saa> ((Is literacy a common thing?))
  110. <Vern|GM> ((Yes))
  111. <Nick|Saa> Saa takes out a bit of parchment he's taken to carrying in the past months. 'My name is Saa,' it says, 'I've sworn an oath of silence.' The handwriting is scribbled, but it should be legible enough. ||
  112. <Vern|GM> "Ah, nasty piece that, won't make it easy making a good impression, but it's powerful, I'll give you that." The man nods. "Which direction did you come from?" ||
  113. <Vern|GM> ((It really doesn't matter, just decide on one or make up a village))
  114. <Nick|Saa> Saa tries to recall where his home was relative to An-Lumen and his current facing. He points to what he thinks is north, before writing his town's name on the back of the parchment. 'Wereworth.' ||
  115. <Vern|GM> "On foot, right? Did you see the star fall a few days ago?" ||
  116. <Nick|Saa> Saa points to his maul. ||
  117. <Vern|GM> "Ah, nasty business, how's..."
  118. <Vern|GM> The man grabs a big book from under the board and flips through it until he ends up on a name. "Amir? Did he fight with you?" ||
  119. <Nick|Saa> Saa closes hios eyes, and shakes his head sadly, before making a small 'X' shape with his finger on Amir's name in the book. A great shame. Saa hadn't even known his name until now. ||
  120. <Vern|GM> "Ah," the man says, his jaw set. "I'll send someone to replace him soon. If you managed to kill whatever took him, I'm sure you should be able to take care of something bigger. I'll organize a transfer to the village of Tolosa."
  121. <Vern|GM> "You'll want to get something better than the rags you're wearing, though. You can stay in the tower until the transfer is finished, until then, please enjoy the city."
  122. <Vern|GM> He hands Saa a map with describes vague locations in the city without being very accurate in portraying the everchanging landscape of towers. "You'll find someone who can make you something good here, tell him you're new and he'll be giving you the first thing for free." ||
  123. <Nick|Saa> Fuck, something bigger than the Ursa Minor? Saa doesn't know if he can realistically handle a stronger Star. Hopefully the glow of his maul meant something in terms of combat applications. He bows to Pete, hopefully in a clear indication of thanks, and then turns to head out of the tower.
  124. <Nick|Saa> He tries to find the location that the map describes, wandering the city in his hushed shroud of undetectability. ||
  125. <Vern|GM> The building he pointed towards seems like it's the only one that isn't a tower.
  126. <Vern|GM> Instead, it's a small hut with a chimney as tall as some of the towers.
  127. <Vern|GM> Stepping inside, Saa immediately found himself staring at a strange sight. A woman standing over on a hammer, and a large man lifting it up before she stomps down on it, sending golden sparks everywhere.
  128. <Vern|GM> People in the city of An-Lumen seem like the excentric sort.
  129. <Vern|GM> She turns towards the young man, still not stopping her stomping whenever she jumps up. One of the sparks hits Saa, burning a small hole through his clothes. Despite the hushed oath, she can see him. There is no spark in her eyes. ||
  130. <Nick|Saa> Saa shows her the parchment with his name, smiles, and then hastily writes another bit about how Pete told him that he could get something good here to start out. ||
  131. <Vern|GM> "Aye!" she shouts. "Bubbles, we got something to do for them Starborn!"
  132. <Vern|GM> The large man, Bubbles apparently, nods, not saying a word or making any noise. Instead, the turns his head towards Saa and sizes him up. Nodding twice, the man looks towards the woman again. "Middle-sized. Seven pieces of dust."
  133. <Vern|GM> "Eight," she counters.
  134. <Vern|GM> When she jumps off the hammer and takes out a measurement band, she rushes around Saa, checking every size before grumbling. "Seven it is."
  135. <Vern|GM> ||
  136. <Nick|Saa> ((Does Saa have any idea what they're talking about?))
  137. <Vern|GM> ((No))
  138. <Nick|Saa> Saa scrunches up his face in confusion. Hopefully they don't need him to do anything. If he could talk, he'd ask, but it's too much of a pain to write, and by the time he finished, whatever confusion he has might not be relevant anymore. He trusts that they've interacted with enough new Starborn to know what he would or wouldn't understand. ||
  139. <Vern|GM> The big man grabs a chunk of... something. It looks like a big stone that glows in a weird purple light.
  140. <Vern|GM> He grabs six more and throws them all into the furnace, seemlingly haphazardly without any regard for proper procedures, and then he blows at it. White hot fire leaves his mouth and just as quick as the furnace was filled, he pulls the molten pieces out with his hands.
  141. <Vern|GM> It's a spectacular display. Also a ridiculous one.

  144. <Vern|GM> The man's hands sizzle as he molds the purple ore and turns it into something vaguely resembling something to wear. The woman pushes Saa towards him and the man just slaps the form onto him.
  145. <Vern|GM> Saa closes his eyes, flinching away as he expected pain. Instead, the purple ore solidifies into something vaguely resembling a chestplate. It's light, but the spark can see it has power. ||
  146. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods in thanks, and inspects his new piece of armor. He waits for any more information he might need about it. ||
  147. <Vern|GM> "This is gonna keep you in one piece," the woman says. "It's sturdy, easy to move in, and it's a hit with the girls. Worst comes to worst, it can survive a few hits if you need to tank one instead of dodging. There's better ores, but those are too expensive to just give them to you. You'll want to spend the money you get here if you want to live long."

  151. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods again, this time to acknowledge the woman's words. He smiles as he leaves. It seems kind of odd that they charge for the service, when the armor might very well save other lives than his own, but he supposes that the overlap between successful Starborn and rich Starborn would be pretty big. He decides to return to the tower of Babel, to check his sleeping situation. ||
  152. <Vern|GM> When Pete sees Saa's armor, he nods with a smile. "Looks like it works out. Let me lead you to your room."
  153. <Vern|GM> Pete leads Saa up the stairs to the first floor and opens a door full of many beds.
  154. <Vern|GM> "I don't know how long it'll take, but until then, please make yourself comfortable. If you become strong enough, you'll eventually leave guard service to go on hunts, An-Lumen might become a permanent home for you then, so don't think of it as a fated one-time meeting." ||
  155. <Nick|Saa> Makes sense. Saa guesses that the hunters are sent after the strongest Stars. He doesn't have much hope that he'll survive that long, but there's no point in planning otherwise. ||
  156. <Vern|GM> "You probably didn't notice due to the excitement and the city's brightness, but it's pretty late already, I suggest you rest and come see me tomorrow. If I don't have anything for you to do by then, I, ah. No idea, really. I'm generally fast. Good night, Saa." ||
  157. <Nick|Saa> Saa smiles and nods. He goes to the farthest bed, and prepares to sleep. ||
  158. <Vern|GM> ...
  159. <Vern|GM> ---
  160. <Vern|GM> ...
  161. <Vern|GM> Saa wakes up to an unfamiliar ceiling.
  162. <Vern|GM> The sounds of people walking in and out the tower on the lower floor are loud.
  163. <Vern|GM> Despite sleeping in an armor, he feels rested and not sore at all. Moving out of the bed and down the stairs, he catches sight of a rather impressive amount of Starborn gathered in front of Pete.
  164. <Vern|GM> "Zulu and Zim, you'll go west towards Tiveria. Send the knucklehead there back here for a new assigment," Pete says. "Rafael, you take over Amir's place towards north."
  165. <Vern|GM> It continues like that, name after name until all are gone.
  166. <Vern|GM> All except Saa.
  167. <Vern|GM> "Saa," he says, blinking. "Are you there?" He looks around. Unable to see him, he sighs. "Hushed blessing, right." Pete sweeps his eyes over the room again, a soft glow moving around before his eyes settle on the young man who began to approach his elder. "There you are!"
  168. <Vern|GM> "It went through rather quickly, Tolosa is going to be your village," he says. "It's towards east from here, a week or so at foot, we'll get you something to ride, though, shouldn't take too long." ||
  169. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods. Something? he thinks. He wonders what that something could be. ||
  170. <Vern|GM> "So let me get through the usual proceedings," he says. "Saa, Tolosa. You'll receive a weekly payment with additional bonuses for every Star reported slain during that week. It's mostly formality to check up if you've died and send a replacement quick enough."
  171. <Vern|GM> Though it sounds morbid, it's also reasonable. Saa can't say he likes how casually Pete lets words like 'death' slip through his teeth.
  172. <Vern|GM> "You can keep bonuses in the city instead of having them paid out to you immediately, that'll probably be better with larger sums so you don't have to carry them around. I'm not saying people will try to steal from you, but they'll kinda try to steal from you." ||
  173. <Nick|Saa> Makes sense. Saa doesn't dare to hope that he'll be so successful that he'll have to worry about that. IF he'll be regularly fighting Stars stronger than the bear he just encountered, he's not optimistic about his chances. Still, he refrains from arguing. People don't tend to decide to read your scribbles when you disagree with them. ||
  174. <Vern|GM> "Go to the east end of the city and look for a man with a scar over his eye. Show him this note, and you'll be off," he says, giving Saa a slip of paper. "Good hunting. May the God of Light illuminate your path to the future." ||

  210. <Vern|GM> ((Can you post the last line I posted, I'm on a different device right now))
  211. <Nick|Saa> ((sure))
  212. <Nick|Saa> http://pastebin.com/AWKp2Zs8
  213. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods again. He's getting rather tired of nodding. He puts his palms together in a praying gesture and then turns to leave the Tower of Babel. He's quite nervous about his assignment, but he'll do as Pete said, and go to the east end of the city. ||
  214. <Vern|GM> ((Aight, your turn then))
  215. <Vern|GM> ((gg))
  216. <Vern|GM> The man he's supposed to look for wasn't very hard to find.
  217. <Vern|GM> He just stands next to... something. A beast, not unlike a dog, though bigger, and more menacing.
  218. <Vern|GM> It has something like a spark in its eyes, and its nose immediately twitches. It turns towards him, and the old man does as well. "Ah, a customer?" the man asks. "Hello, young Starborn." ||
  219. <Nick|Saa> Well, that explains the 'something.' Saa's unsure about riding that giant dog, though. He shows him his note with his name and oath, and scribbles down "assigned to Tolosa" on another piece of parchment, showing the scarred man. ||
  220. <Vern|GM> "Ah, Tolosa, never liked that place much," the man says, muttering under his breath. "Step on, then. it won't take long but it's not gonna be a comfortable ride for a first timer."
  221. <Vern|GM> The man jumps onto the dog's back, rubbing his hands over the giant head. The dog sounds happy. ||
  222. <Nick|Saa> Saa clumsily clambers on after him, holding on as tight as he can. ||
  223. <Vern|GM> When the dog stands, Saa is lifted so far above the ground that he is sure he could hurt himself from falling off.
  224. <Vern|GM> It spins around and runs. The wind vanishes, and despite the high speed none of it hits Saa in the face.
  225. <Vern|GM> The dog must be using some sort of magic, or perhaps the man is.
  226. <Vern|GM> Holding on tight as the dog's movement kept trying to knock him left and right, Saa closes his eyes and hopes the journey is over soon...
  227. <Vern|GM> After what feels like hours, the dog stops. The world stops being a blur.
  228. <Vern|GM> Tolosa is a richer village. The high population also means that they're dragged into the conflict more often.
  229. <Vern|GM> A man with the spark steps up to to rider, smiling widely. "Here to take me home, Uru?"
  230. <Vern|GM> "Yes, and I brought your replacement," he says, pulling Saa off the dog and putting his shaking legs onto the ground. Saa nearly collapsed, but kept himself upright. "Doesn't look like much, to be honest."
  231. <Vern|GM> "Eh, Pete wouldn't have sent him here if he wasn't strong enough, you know how he is," the Starborn says. "Hey, kid, welcome to Tolosa. I'm Ibisa." ||
  232. <Nick|Saa> Saa smiles and waves at the older Starborn, suppressing the shuddering of his legs. It would be convienient to be able to speak right now, but he stays silent. At least Ibisa is alive. He seems pretty upbeat, too. Hopefully that indicates that Tolosa isn't all that bad. ||
  233. <Vern|GM> "I left the house mostly intact, the big one with the blue roof down there," Ibisa says, pointing towards it. It's visible in the distance. "Left you a little something there when I hear you're new, it's a clock made from stardust, telling the time without those is harder to do, after all."
  234. <Vern|GM> Saa isn't sure why exactly. The old teachers spoke of something that the stars were doing with the gravity and how it affected how normal clocks worked. Nobody at that age really paid attention in school. Stardust clocks are expensive, that much he knows. ||
  235. <Nick|Saa> Saa mouths the words "thank you." Hopefully those words were easy enough to read from his lips. With the sky being perpetually bright and the stars always being out, it was easy to lose track of time. He hopes that the part about the house being 'mostly intact' was a joke. ||
  236. <Vern|GM> Throwing the bag he put down next to him over his shoulder, Ibisa jumps onto the giant dog. Uru follows. "Good luck, kid. It'll take a bit until they trust you, but Tolosa's citizens aren't all assholes."
  237. <Vern|GM> He throws a key towards Saa after one last nod. ||
  238. <Nick|Saa> Saa catches the key, while thinking to himself that his perpetual silence will definitely not endear the townsfolk to him. He waves to Uru and Ibisa as they leave, and then starts looking for the house that the other Starborn mentioned. Hoepfully he won't have to deal with anything right away. He wants to at least get a chance to settle down. ||
  239. <Vern|GM> The house seems simple.
  240. <Vern|GM> It doesn't look like anything more special than the other houses, not luxurous, but still comfortable.
  241. <Vern|GM> Stepping in, Saa immediately notices the clock on the wall. Besides that, the house is utterly unremarkable.
  242. <Vern|GM> There's rooms. A room for cooking, a room to sit down in, no second floor. It's almost strange how big just one floor can be for one person.
  243. <Vern|GM> In fact, the size of it is the overwhelming part. It's too much for one person. But it's his home now until Pete says otherwise. All for his duty.
  244. <Vern|GM> He's been promised greatness after all. ||
  245. <Nick|Saa> Yeah, yeah. Greatness. Saa never wanted any of that. He's a bit more convinced of the merits of being a Starborn after visiting An-Lumen, but he's not entirely enchanted yet with his fate. He decides to go and see where he can get food and supplies in the town. ||
  246. <Vern|GM> The big village has a market. The clock reveals that it's midday, which means people should be out.
  247. <Vern|GM> Walking through the village, Saa takes in the sights, unnoticed by the people.
  248. <Vern|GM> The market isn't very big, but there's still a lot to buy. All kinds of food that weren't available in Wereworth. All kinds of fancy pelts and other clothes.
  249. <Vern|GM> "Did you hear?" Saa hears someone whisper to another person. "Ibisa left, they're replacing him."
  250. <Vern|GM> "What?!" the other says loudly. "Isn't the replacement there already?! It makes no sense for him to leave now!" ||
  251. <Nick|Saa> ((how much money does Saa have?))
  252. <Vern|GM> ((Enough to buy himself a meal for the next two weeks))
  253. <Nick|Saa> ((perfect))
  254. <Nick|Saa> Saa doesn't bother correcting them. If things go well, they'll find out he's here when he successfully guards the town from the Stars. If things go poorly, they'll find out he's here when someone stumbles across his dead body and his replacement comes.
  255. <Nick|Saa> He goes up to a market stall that has vegetables, and knocks on the side with his fist to get the vendor's attention. ||
  256. <Vern|GM> The old man who sits there almost jumps out of his chair in fright before shaking his head, clapping his hands together immediately. "Welcome to my shop! The freshest vegetables in all of Tolosa! What can I do for you, young sir? - are you a traveler? I don't think I've seen you before." ||
  257. <Nick|Saa> Saa points to some potatos, onions, and carrots, holding up fingers for how many of each he wants, and puts his best guess at their cost on the surface of the stall. The vendor should be able to figure out what he wants from that, surely. ||
  258. <Vern|GM> The man blinks, not looking too happy with the lack of conversation with an apparent traveler. "As you wish." - the man looks over Saa. "Want a bag to go with that? Or do you wanna carry that around until you need it?" ||
  259. <Nick|Saa> Saa does want a bag, and nods at the mention of it. ||
  260. <Vern|GM> The man takes a thin linen bag from under the stand and then knocks over one of the coins towards Saa again. He seems nice. "Welcome to Tolosa, please enjoy your stay."
  261. <Vern|GM> He takes the money sans the coin he knocked towards Saa and throws the wares into the bag, handing it over the Starborn. ||
  262. <Nick|Saa> Saa smiles widely, and heads back to the house to store the food. He glances longingly at the clothing, but he should wait until he gets some more payment from An-Lumen to buy any non-essentials. Some heavy boots would be really nice...
  263. <Nick|Saa> At least he knows how he'll spend his first paycheck. ||
  264. <Vern|GM> The food stored, the day is still far from over. The old man couldn't see the spark considering how faint it must be in Saa's eyes, but luckily he didn't notice the weapon either in the rather short lived and one sided conversation and purchase.

  266. <Vern|GM> Unfortunately, it doesn't look like everything is supposed to work out today.
  267. <Vern|GM> The door's lock squeaked. Someone is trying to break in.
  268. <Vern|GM> Pete wasn't lying. ||
  269. <Nick|Saa> Saa sighs. Unless the thief wants to steal his newly acquired vegetables, there's nothing here. Then he remembers the clock. Now, that was a good reason to rob someone. Saa stands by the clock, watching the door, but takes out his maul, hoping to look threatening enough to discourage the would-be thief. ||
  270. <Vern|GM> The door opened slowly as the lock snaps open. Whoever is stepping in is at least professional enough not to snap the lock in half to get in. That'd probably make too much noise anyway.
  271. <Vern|GM> A woman, her hair up in a bun, walks in, looking around. She is holding... a key.
  272. <Vern|GM> She looks young. A bit younger than Saa, perhaps, if only by a year. And rather than look for something to steal, she immediately walks towards the living room and sits down on a couch. Saa too surprised to really stop her before she got that far.
  273. <Vern|GM> "Asshole just left," she mutters. "Told me he'd show me An-Lumen. Told me he'd take me away from here. Pf."
  274. <Vern|GM> A very unlady-like snort. ||
  275. <Nick|Saa> Saa puts his maul back into place on his back, and claps to inform the woman of his presence. He points to his eye to show her the spark. Hopefully she would know what it meant. He could ponder on why Ibisa had lied to this woman later. ||
  276. <Vern|GM> She jumped out of the couch and grabbed a vase from the table, raising it as if about to throw it. "Who are you- oh shit- Ibisa shrinked!"
  277. <Vern|GM> "No wait, he doens't use a hammer, who are you?" she spits the words, narrowing her eyes. ||
  278. <Nick|Saa> Saa puts his hands up in the universal gesture of 'I'm not going to kill you,' before walking closer to the angry woman and showing her his introduction paper. While she reads it, he writes 'replacement' hastily on another piece, and shows her that one, too. ||
  279. <Vern|GM> "Ugh, you guys sure work quick," she says. "Okay, sorry for walking into your new home, I guess. Fucking asshole just left without saying goodbye. She throws the key onto the couch and puts the vase down again. "I'm Karin. Welcome to Tolosa, village of absolutely nothing but old and boring people."
  280. <Vern|GM> She crosses her arms. It doesn't seem like she's going to just walk out. ||
  281. <Nick|Saa> Saa makes an expression that he hopes is interpretable as pity. He mouths the word 'sorry' as best he can, before writing 'who are you?' on the paper. ||
  282. <Vern|GM> "I heard the expression 'tongue-tied', but I don't think I've actually met someone who went mute from my beauty," she said. She stood with her fists on her hips. "I'm the village elder's daughter, Karin da Tolosa. I used to be friends with the idiot who used to live here until today. What's your name, Starborn?" ||
  283. <Nick|Saa> ((The first piece of paper I gave her was the one that said 'My name is Saa. I've taken an oath of silence'))
  284. <Vern|GM> -||
  285. <Vern|GM> "Wait shit, silence, right? Well, fuck, I think we might get along."
  286. <Vern|GM> For someone who says that, she's incredibly outspoken.
  287. <Vern|GM> Also very loud.
  288. <Vern|GM> "Bah, you're supposed to protect us, right?" she says. "I'm starving. Let me have dinner here tonight, I don't want to go home."
  289. <Vern|GM> She doens't sound like someone who's going to take no for an answer, though if Saa really wanted to, he can just kick her out. He's supposed to fight monsters, not angry women. ||
  290. <Nick|Saa> It would be really useful to be able to talk here; people just didn't take his scribbled notes as seriously as a firm spoken word. It's not like he has an excess of food, anyway. He reluctantly nods, and starts preparing his vegetables. ||
  291. <Vern|GM> She sits down on the couch again, slumping in it. It takes about five minutes of silent chopping until she returns, her sleeves rolled up.
  292. <Vern|GM> "Alright," she says. "I'll help, because you look so helpless."
  293. <Vern|GM> Half the vegetables were done already. She doesn't correct herself, and instead starts heating the fire they need for the cooking.
  294. <Vern|GM> While she burns herself occasionally, and cut her finger twice trying to help with the vegetables, glaring at Saa every time she messed up, she looks like she's actually trying, so there's that.
  295. <Vern|GM> ||
  296. <Nick|Saa> Saa is very confused. He's not a bad cook, and this girl seems to be worse than him. Is she just trying to help because she's bored? And why was she getting mad at him when she messed up? He guesses that it's making the meal preperations go faster anyway, though, so he lets her continue. He pours some water into a pot, and starts heating it on the fire, adding the chopped vegetables to make a simple soup. When the vegetables are soft, he serves some of the soup into two bowls. ||
  297. <Vern|GM> The dinner table isn't large, but enough for three or four people if one really stretched it. Sitting down in one of the chairs, Karin begins eating.
  298. <Vern|GM> It's pleasant, to finally eat after a while with only rations.
  299. <Vern|GM> She doesn't look too happy. Saa assumes it's mostly about Ibisa, though, and not about the soup. Still, just in case she strikes up another conversation, pen and paper were ready on the table. ||
  300. <Nick|Saa> The warm food is very welcome. Saa eats quickly, and soon finishes. He waits for Karin to do the same. ||
  301. <Vern|GM> She gets halfway through the soup before she stops, her face red, though not from the warm soup. "That asshole," she mutters, wiping at her eyes. "It's not like you people are popular, when someone likes you, shouldn't you cherish that relationship?"
  302. <Vern|GM> Though she could've put it in a nicer way, she's not entirely wrong that Starborn don't have many friends. Not even other Starborn, considering how they're often split up and sent towards all kinds of villages and places.
  303. <Vern|GM> ||
  304. <Nick|Saa> Saa writes 'sounds awful.' He'll just agree with her to make it easier. It'd take too long to get into an actual in-depth conversation about it, and she doesn't seem like the type to actually want to hear his real thoughts. ||
  305. <Vern|GM> "He is!" she agrees quickly. "He's the most self-centered, arrogant, womanizing piece of shit there is! But... but... you make me depressed, you should talk to people, not going to kill you if you do it ocasionally, right?"
  306. <Vern|GM> Saa doesn't actually know what kind of punishment would come down on him if he broke his oath. It's a powerful one, after all. They say Gods focused Oathbreakers for the sole reason of them being weaker than the common Starborn. ||
  307. <Nick|Saa> 'it might do worse than kill me,' Saa writes. He's not actually sure that Ibisa was actually all that bad, though. This woman seems to jump to conclusions rather quickly, and Ibisa seemed nice enough, what with leaving him the clock and all. ||
  308. <Vern|GM> "Okay, that's bad, I guess," she mutters. "Anyway! Thanks for the meal, I'll be sure to give everyone a good impression of you, it might help with the assholes in the village. There's a woman who will give birth soon, though, so maybe stay inside when that happens."
  309. <Vern|GM> There's rumors about the presence of Starborn giving the spark to newborn children. Pure superstition. But at least she sounds like she's worried about Saa being disliked after helping her with her.... breakup?
  310. <Vern|GM> ||
  311. <Nick|Saa> Saa nods, and smiles. 'thank you,' he writes. No point in not writing it, after all. He checks the clock on the wall. He decides that he should try to learn the layout of the village, in case he needs to know it in an emergency. He follows Karin out, locks the door, and walks in a different direction, counting on his hushed oath keeping him from notice. ||
  312. <Vern|GM> It takes a few hours to map everything out mentally. The houses are mostly kept in a pattern, the fields from which the village grows many of the vegetables to the east of them, while the market is towards the west end of the city.
  313. <Vern|GM> And as if welcoming him into the village, the sky rumbled.
  314. <Vern|GM> A whistling sound announces itself and a star falls.
  315. <Vern|GM> Then a second one.
  316. <Vern|GM> The stars crash east and west to the village, one shining brighter than the other.
  317. <Vern|GM> Luckily, the people are already at home, hiding through the night, maybe sleeping and just now woken up.
  318. <Vern|GM> The brighter star is near the market. The less bright star near the fields. ||
  319. <Nick|Saa> Saa has to decide quickly. The brighter Star was closer to the civilians, so it was probably a more immediate concern. It wouldn't exxactly make him popular if he let the market get smashed, but the farmers might even be more upset if their fields were ruined. Saa closes his eyes, and thinks hard. He decides to go to the market first. Hopefully he could get both stars before any real damage was done. He breaks into a full-out run, towards the market where he bought his food earlier, pulling out his maul as he runs. ||
  320. <Vern|GM> ...
  321. <Vern|GM> The appearance of the Star looms over the market.
  322. <Vern|GM> It's humanoid, though not entirely.
  323. <Vern|GM> Its hair is like a circle behind its head, its face is like stone, without any human-like expression carved onto it.
  324. <Vern|GM> "It is my master that has send me here to find the one that made broke his brother," the male voice says. It's soft, yet strangely grating.
  325. <Vern|GM> "I can feel your presence, hushed one, but I cannot see you. Show yourself." ||
  326. <Nick|Saa> His master? Saa made broke this Star's master's borther? So Ursa Minor was the brother of his master. That must make his master Ursa Major. But who was this star? Saa calls on his oath to shroud him as he gets closer to the Star, planning a sneak attack. He doesn't plan on revealing himself just because he was commanded to, and he needs to get this over with quickly, so he can also address the other Star. When Saa gets close enough, he brings his glowing maul down hard at the back of the human-shaped Star. ||
  327. <Vern|GM> The maul smashes into it, and it falls, dust shooting around from where the golden form cracks.
  328. <Vern|GM> "Ah, perhaps this pain is my punishment," the Star says. The maul sings the Star's name.
  329. <Vern|GM> Vashistha.
  330. <Vern|GM> "O hushed child, cursed by your physical form, let me hand you to your god," Vashistha says, his form moving higher. "The God of Light will never shine as bright as us, he will drown in the blood of his children."
  331. <Vern|GM> The surprise attack shook the Star. It keeps a stony facade, a haughty air, but it's obviously hurt. Either Saa is this much stronger since last time, or this star is just that much weaker than Ursa Minor. ||
  332. <Nick|Saa> Of course. His guess of Ursa Major was proven right, then. The Star by the fields must be Arundhati, his fainter double. Saa guesses that both his weapon is stronger and this Star is weaker. Of course, the fact that it has a twin makes up for its lack of strength. If Saa can't deal with this Star quickly, the other will surely cause large amounts of damage.
  333. <Nick|Saa> Saa is tempted to come up with a witty remark, regardless of whether or not he could say it, but blinks as he refocuses on the situation at hand. He swings again with his maul, coming from the side this time, hoping to crack the Star into dust, or at the very least keep it off balance. ||
  334. <Vern|GM> The star spins around, trying to fly up in an attempt to dodge the maul. Instead, it hit its legs so hard that Vashistha spun around.
  335. <Vern|GM> Then its hand lashed out, slapping the front of Saa's armor, and before he can do anything, the slap sends him skidding backwards, the shock spread over the purple chestpiece, leaving him with a stinging pain throughout his upperbody.
  336. <Vern|GM> Vashistha spins around again, landing on the ground this time, its feet touching the ground as dust gathers to fill the wound on its leg.
  337. <Vern|GM> "Whoreson with poisonous fangs, my patience will not hold forever, you surely should lie down to rest now." ||
  338. <Nick|Saa> Thank god for the armor. That blow didn't hurt nearly as bad as Ursa Minor's light blast. The Star healing itself is definitely a bad sign, though. Maybe Saa had underestimated it. What this Star needs is one huge blow.
  339. <Nick|Saa> He climbs a market stall to get a better angle at the large Star, and jumps down towards it, maul above the head, trying to smash the Star's halo-crown hair thing with the assistance of gravity. ||
  340. <Vern|GM> The star lifts its arms to block, and the maul smashes them into pieces. Though the dust gathers together and heals them quickly, the crown shatters off its head and leaves pieces on the ground, not moving.
  341. <Vern|GM> When it lashes out with its regenerating arms, the star punches the armor, and breaks its hands on it.
  342. <Vern|GM> A loud bell tolls and its sound echoes through the market. Arundhati appears.
  343. <Vern|GM> Her hair flows down her back despite its rigid appearance of gold and she stares down on Saa, her expression unreadable.
  344. <Vern|GM> "You said you'd kill him in seconds," she says to her twin star. "O dearest husband of mine, how far the mighty have fallen."
  345. <Vern|GM> "You wound my heart," Vashistha says. "It is not too much for a husband to ask his wife for help, is it?" ||
  346. <Nick|Saa> ((About how tall are the Stars?))
  347. <Vern|GM> ((Not quite twice as tall as normal adult humans, but still a head or so taller)
  348. <Nick|Saa> ((Saa can reach their heads with his maul, then?))
  349. <Vern|GM> ((Yes, with a jump or an overhead smash))
  350. <Nick|Saa> Saa thinks for a second about dropping out of sight, and getting another free attack in from the shadows, but the regeneration makes that plan less than ideal. Instead, as Vashistha speaks, Saa raises his arms over his head, maul grasped in both hands, and brings it down at his talking mouth.
  351. <Nick|Saa> Saa likes the image of the mute Starslayer attacking the mouths of overly talkative stars. ||
  352. <Vern|GM> The head exploded off.
  353. <Vern|GM> Vashistha's form falls to the ground and stays like that. Instead of worrying about her husband, Arundhati falls out of the sky towards Saa, her palm raised.
  354. <Vern|GM> And she slaps the armor before Saa can dodge.
  355. <Vern|GM> He skids back, again, the pain in his chest growing, and in the distance he can see the dust gather around Vashistha. Though he can't move right now, the star is going to be moving again very soon. ||
  356. --> Ellardy (uid178344@highgate.irccloud.com) has joined #DamnitVern
  357. <Nick|Saa> He needs to stop Vashistha from regenerating. Saa gets up, coughing, and makes his way as quickly as he can to the regenerating Star. He ignores Arunhati as he lifts his maul again straining his aching torso and shoulders, bringing it down on the motionless Star with all his strength, hoping that this time it would finally shatter to pieces. ||
  358. <Vern|GM> Though Saa nearly stumbles, and Arundhati is about to chop his arm off, he manages to force himself through, under her arm.
  359. <Vern|GM> The hammer smashes Vashistha into even more pieces, and the dust still keeps coming together, way slower than before this time.
  360. <Vern|GM> It seems that whatever is regenerating him isn't related to his own body.
  361. <-> Ellardy is now known as EllardyAway
  362. <Vern|GM> ||
  363. <Nick|Saa> Oh, OK. Now he gets it. They were twins, right? Linked. Saa hopes that that level of destruction would keep the brighter Star from bothering him as he fights his wife. He turns back to Arundhati. He feints with an overhead blow, but swings it around at the last second, letting his arm's tension pull the maul back towards the Star's right knee.
  364. <Nick|Saa> Saa prays to the God of Light, the last god of humanity, that his oath also makes people pay less attention to him even when they know he's there. He'll need all the help he can get to finish off these twin stars. ||
  365. <Vern|GM> The star falls to its knees, well, knee, as one shatters. Its even more brittle than the other one, and when it tries to send Saa skidding again, he finally manages to dodge right for once, and spins around with the motion.
  366. <Vern|GM> The hammer shatters her arm into even more pieces. ||
  367. <Nick|Saa> Saa is honestly pretty surprised at how well that move went. He thanks the God of Light, and pulls back, preparing to strike at the Star's arm if and when the Star reaches out with the same palm attack to the torso. Maybe by guarding himself instead of lashing out, he can more effectively stop getting hit. ||
  368. <Vern|GM> When the second arm lashes out, Saa is prepared.
  369. <Vern|GM> The maul smashes it into pieces, and the Star doesn't make a noise, not even a defiant stare, as it notices itself falling to ashes.
  370. <Vern|GM> The stardust gathers, and she looks up as her star vanishes in the sky. Instead of restoring itself, it remains snuffed out.
  371. <Vern|GM> "Ah, we've failed, dear husband," she says. Vashistha stays silent.
  372. <Vern|GM> "Vashistha, dear," she tries again, her chin falling apart. "Speak to me."
  373. <Vern|GM> The dust vanishes in Saa's weapon as the twins die. ||
  374. <Nick|Saa> Saa looks around at the damage done to the market, making sure no civilians got caught in the crossfire and assessing the damage done to the buildings and stalls. ||
  375. <Vern|GM> Surprisingly, there's no damage.
  376. <Vern|GM> Too busy with her husband, the female twin didn't bother attacking anyone as she floated here to the market.
  377. <Vern|GM> And their attacks weren't quite as wide-spread and devastating, instead more focused. He can still feel the sting in his chest. ||
  378. <Nick|Saa> Saa decides he should check where Arundhati fell, just to make sure there's no fire in the fields or anything. He's hurting, sure, but he can't have his first impression here be that he let the crops all die. After that, he'll return to his house to rest and recuperate. ||
  379. <Vern|GM> After confirming that the only damage to the fields is a few of the crops being stepped over, Saa went back home.
  380. <Vern|GM> The people stay inside as well. Throughly exhausted, and that only on his first day, Saa goes to sleep. The spark in his eyes grows stronger. ||||
