  1. 1. How many of the men in their company died in their first battle? How do you know? Also, explain why they were able finally eat so well.
  2.
  3. A lot of men died in their first battle. When there was a lot of people in the military, less foods were given and provided. A lot of foods were given but they would finish quickly because the amount of people in the military. However, since a lot of men died during the first battle, it made an increasement in foods and gave other men a good opportunity to eat well and more. If a lot of men didn’t die in their very first battle, there wouldn’t be a good chance for the men to eat all equally and better.
  4.
  5. 2. Who did they blame for this war?
  6.
  7. They blamed the French for all of it during the war. The French were going against the Germany hard and kept attacking them, which then they lost several men every time. The more men they lost, the less chance they had of winning. A lot of men were apart of the casualty rate from Germany.
  8. 3. How did they react to Sergeant Himmelstoss when he was sent to the frontlines? Were they happy to see him? Did they respect him? Describe what happened and how they probably felt.
  9.
  10. They were not happy with Sergeant Himmelstoss. They hated and made fun of them massively. The Sergeant was not well brave enough in order to be fighting in the frontlines. The soldiers were extremely angry at him the fact he was sent in the front lines. Paul was mad when he found out the Sergeant was hiding and not being brave during the war. He was laying down on the dirt being massively scared until Paul had to encouraged the soldiers with the Sergeant to move up.
  11.
  12. 4. Below is a map of the Western Front where Paul was fighting. Look over the map and answer the questions after it.
  13.
  14. Was the Western Front a large battle area? Explain.
  15.
  16. Yes, it was a huge large battle area. It was a 400-plus mile stretch of land with a huge casualty and injuries rate. That’s where most of the cold war occured. A lot of soldiers died around the Western Front. The Germany were sending a lot of soldiers every time to fight during the cold war in the Western Front. The casualty rate was increasing overtime.
  17.
  18.
  19. What two countries are between France and Germany? How did this possibly effect the war?
  20.
  21.
  22. Netherlands and Belgium were the countries between France and Germany. This affected the war between France and Germany a lot. Belgium and Netherlands were in the line of a war that was happening and they did not want to get involved. However, the main issue is that they were apart of the war since Germany and France were moving towards each other, which put the two countries in between to be apart of the war.
  23.
  24. The red line represents the line of the front. Why do you think the front was in France and not Germany? Thinking like a German soldier why would you not want the front line in Germany?
  25.
  26. Netherlands and Belgium are in between Germany and France. It was a good choice to put the front line in France so Netherlands and Belgium aren’t considered a enemy territory. Although they were involved, but they didn’t want to be considered enemy or neutral just by heading past the middle of their countries.
