  1. (LAST UPDATED 2/9/2021) *Sorry if I forget to update this often, just a kid dealing with school and homework.*
  2.
  3. Hey there! Interested on modding SSBU for those cool cosmetics or broken mechanics? Keep on reading :)
  4.
  5. *This tutorial is mainly based on this guide: https://gamebanana.com/tuts/13154
  6. But because of how rarely the guide updates, I made this, and also made it a bit more simple.
  7.
  8. Made purely for convenience, as the tutorial above was not the clearest, so I will simplify it step by step from start to finish. As, someone who ran through the tutorial myself, there are many things that aren't said or emphasized correctly. I may update this in the future if something happens to change. Please read the FAQ afterwards, as it answers a lot of questions that many have. Again, if this pastebin looks a bit intimidating, trust me, it's not. It is easy, takes like 30 minutes. but I just went into depth to make sure no one is confused.

  13. === MODDING SMASH ULTIMATE GUIDE ===
  14.
  15. REQUIREMENTS:
  16. *Yuzu Switch Emulator (Any recent EA or mainline build)
  17. -You can easily get this by googling "pinEApple yuzu" or going into the discord I linked at the end. We have a yuzu auto-updater :)
  18. *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate + 10.1.0
  19. -You can easily get the base game and update on nsw2u. Google it.
  20. *Ultimate Mod Manager (UMM) - https://github.com/ultimate-research/UltimateModManager/releases
  21. -Make sure to use the latest build, fixed a lot of issues for me and others.
  22. *Any mod/s of your choice downloaded from https://gamebanana.com/games/6498
  23. -The mod you download HAS to be made for UMM, can see if it is in the description. Can't use any ARCROPOLIS or SKYLINE Mods at the
  24. moment.
  25. -Mostly all mods work on any update, some are odd and don't. You'll have to experiment yourself.
  26. *Time and patience, set aside 30 minutes to set this up. (Take breaks and drink water!)
  27.
  28.
  29.
  30.
  31.
  32. --- PREPARATION ---
  33.
  34. *NOTE - a easy way to get into the yuzu folder is by opening yuzu, clicking "file" in the top left, and hitting "open yuzu folder"
  35.
  36. 1. Open up your File Explorer. You will be creating a new folder where yuzu loads in any mods you have installed for the modding tool to work properly. For those who have mods/patches/DLC for other games, I suggest you copy all of your mods in "C:/Users/Example/AppData/Roaming/yuzu/load" and put it in a safe place. These are all your mod files. Now create a folder in "yuzu/sdmc" named yuzu, then inside of "yuzu/sdmc/yuzu" create another folder named "load". For those with mods, take your mods in whatever place you kept them, and drag them into the new "load" folder you made.
  37.
  38. 2. In the same "Configure" Window of yuzu, hit "System", then "Filesystem". Look down until you see "Mod Load Root". By default, it's C:\Users\<Your User>\AppData\Roaming/yuzu/load/. Change it to C:\Users\<Your User>\AppData\Roaming/yuzu/sdmc/yuzu/load/, the new folder you created earlier in #2. Make sure you double check your path if it's correct or not.
  39.
  40. --- OBTAINING "data.arc" ---
  41.
  42. 1. Open yuzu emulator, right click your SSBU xci/nsp, select "Dump RomFS". It will then ask you to select which RomFS, choose "Base", then choose "Full". It may take a while to fully dump, and it may look like yuzu froze, but please be patient, and take a break. Yuzu will notify you when it is finished and direct you to a file named "data.arc". I HIGHLY suggest you keep a fresh copy of "data.arc" somewhere safe. Think of this file as a fresh backup file of Smash, with no mods installed.
  43.
  44.
  45.
  46.
  47.
  48. --- INSTALLING MODS aka the good part ---
  49. 1. Go to the yuzu file folder by opening yuzu, clicking "file" in the top left, and hitting "open yuzu folder". Go to your "sdmc" folder and create a folder named "UltimateModManager". Next create a folder named "mods". Always remember that yuzu/sdmc/UltimateModManager/mods\ will be the folder you place mods in.
  50. ***Everything should look as follows: yuzu/sdmc/UltimateModManager/mods\modfiles
  51.
  52. 2. Go back to the "sdmc" folder, then go into "sdmc/yuzu/load". If you copied mod files you previously had, you may have had a folder named "01006A800016E000". If you do not have this folder, create it. Once you have this folder, open it and create another folder named "UMM", inside "UMM" create a folder named "romfs", then inside of "romfs", drag a copy of your data.arc file you created earlier.
  53. ***Everything should look as follows: yuzu/sdmc/load/01006A800016E000/UMM/romfs/data.arc\
  54.
  55. RUNNING ULTIMATE MOD MANAGER
  56. 1. Remember that UltimateModManager.nro file you downloaded at the start? Place it in the folder where all your game nsp/xci files are.
  57.
  58. 2. Boot Ultimate Mod Manager like a regular game. When it launches, go into the "Mod Installer". It should bring up a list of the mod folders in your UltimateModManager/mods folder. Install/Uninstall mods using A and B, it will show you the controls on the bottom.
  59.
  60. 3. After you're done installing the mod, Go to "Emulation" and hit "Stop". Now you are free to boot up Smash as you normally would right from yuzu!
  61.
  62.
  63. That's it. It's pretty simple.
  64.
  65.
  66. --- FAQ AND HELP ---
  67.
  68. "After booting UMM, it tells me that 'data.arc' is not found, what do I do?"
  69. This is what happens if you are on previous versions of UMM, please install the beta UMM I linked at the start.
  70.
  71. "Do I have to boot smash through UMM?"
  72. Nope, you actually can't since it's intended for normal hacked switches. Boot Smash normally and mods should be installed.
  73.
  74. "Where do I download mods for Smash Ultimate?"
  75. Here, https://gamebanana.com/games/6498
  76.
  77. "What should mod files look like when I'm downloading them?"
  78. Mod files should be folders named like "Kirbyfeet" that you just drag into your mods folder. If you download a mod and it includes files named like "SaltySD", "SaltyNX", "Skyline" or weird filetypes, those mods ARE NOT compatible. Those only work on hacked switches as of now. Basically, modding in Smash Ultimate is very restricted, and as of recent, skyline has been able to bypass mod file size limits from before, but both Salty and Skyline mods require to be run in the background of a normally hacked switch. Yuzu's focus at the moment is not modding games, but we may see support for these mods in the future. Ryujinx looks like they are taking a look at supporting Arcropolis, which may be a game changer in the future, allowing you to basically install any mod you see on game banana.
  79.
  80. "I uninstalled a mod through Ultimate Mod Manager and it didn't uninstall, what's wrong"
  81. Thanks to @Sedhalid, he reminded me that I barely updated this guide. Older versions of UMM should have this problem, but if you install the newest UMM, you'll be fine and won't have this problem.
  82.
  83. "I booted up Smash and I'm stuck on the loading black screen. Help?"
  84. This shouldn't happen anymore with the newer versions of UMM. If I somehow didn't catch it yet, then just renew it with a freshly dumped/copied data.arc, boot it normally, and avoid using that mod.
  85.
  86. "When I boot up UMM, my framerate is extremely low, causing my input to feel weird as hell, what do I do?"
  87. The more mod files you have in your mod folder, the lower frames you will have. I suggest putting and installing a few mods at a time, then drag those installed mods to a folder anywhere else for safe keeping.
  88.
  89. "Will having a modded smash impact my performance on yuzu?"
  90. I can only speak for myself, and so far I've had no performance impact. These shouldn't impact performance at all since it's only replacing some game files/textures/sounds.
  91.
  92. "I've got it working and you're the best person in the world @mocha, do you have any suggestions on what mods I should install now?"
  93. Definitely, here are some fine mods that I run myself.

  102.
  103. Don't just take my suggestions, there's still a ton of mods out there that I haven't mentioned. Go take a look!
  104.
  105. "Does this work on Ryujinx?"
  106. Yes, but I don't know how to do this process ON Ryujinx. Copying the UMM mod folder from yuzu's smash game mod directory into the smash game directory of ryujinx works perfect.
