  3. [10:59:18] * Toffee_Latte is in her apartment, lying on her couch. She was bored, and moreover, lonely, since both Jenny was gone and Chance was out with Bit on a trip to Vanhoover. She ahd just gotten back from the mall a little while ago, having bought some new cookware.
  4. [11:01:18] <Nine_Miles> There is a knock at Toffee_Latte's door and ring of the doorbell.
  5. [11:02:07] * Toffee_Latte flicks her ears, sitting up on her couch. She gets up, slowly limping over to the door and pulling it open. "Hello?"
  6. [11:04:16] <Nine_Miles> There's no pony there. But a letter is left on the doormat. It reads, "For Whom This May Concern".

  8. [11:04:52] * Toffee_Latte blinks, carefully picking it up and limping back inside, sitting down on the couch and opening it.
  9. [11:09:07] * InsanebowDash ([email protected]) Quit (Quit: Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.)
  10. [11:10:51] <Nine_Miles> A business letter of sorts falls into Toffee_Latte's hooves. It smells of formality and drone-like precision. "Dear Ms. Latte, we at the Smooth Trotters Corporation regret to inform you that your current job has been liquidated." (aka fired)
  11. [11:11:14] * InsanebowDash ([email protected]) has joined channel #deadcityops
  12. [11:11:15] * ChanServ sets mode +v InsanebowDash for #deadcityops
  13. [11:13:14] * Toffee_Latte blinks at the letter in shock. "Wh-what..." She looks over it for anything else...
  14. [11:16:00] <Nine_Miles> "In order to compensate for this inconvenience, your services are to be transferred to another field of expertise. You will need to contact Senior Manager Nine Miles during his work hours between 9 am and 5 pm. We thank you for your cooperation."
  15. [11:19:13] <Toffee_Latte> "Wh-whwhwhwh..." She starts to cry softly, curling up and whimpering to herself.
  16. [11:20:02] <Nine_Miles> The letter was signed by the Senior Manager Nine Miles himself.
  17. [11:24:32] * Toffee_Latte whimpers and cries for a good hour before finally pulling herself together and look at her clock to see what time it was.
  18. [11:27:27] <Nine_Miles> It is about one o'clock in the afternoon. Lunch time should be about over for the working ponies up at the Smooth Trotters firm.
  19. [11:28:57] * Toffee_Latte sniffs, pulling on her dress suit slowly and tucking her letter into her pocket. She limps out of her apartment and heads for the Smooth Trotters Co. building, looking rather glum.
  20. [11:37:30] <Nine_Miles> The elevator brings her up to the top of the building, a secretary shows her to Nine_Miles's room. Not as extravagent as Jenny's. It's smaller but meticulous and neat. Book shelves off in the corner with economic and political authors. There's a picture on Nine's desk, a suited pony is sitted on a bench with two smaller fillies on either side of him. They are all smiling.

  24. [11:39:08] * Toffee_Latte sits down quietly in a chair curling her tail around her hooves and drooping her ears slightly as she fidgets, waiting for Nine_Miles to show up.

  26. [11:41:42] * Nine_Miles walks into the room and he spots miss Toffee_Latte. "Good afternoon," he speaks with an aged yet hardened voice. He reaches out a hoof to shake hers, "you must be Miss Latte."
  27. [11:42:57] * Toffee_Latte droops her ears a bit more, nodding to Nine_Miles and shaking his hoof reluctantly. "Yes, that's me." She says softly.
  28. [11:46:56] * Nine_Miles nods and smiles, "pleasure to meet you." He walks over to his side of the desk and sits in his chair, "You must be here for the job transfer, correct?"
  29. [11:47:29] <Toffee_Latte> "Uhm... yeah... but I don't understand why I'm being transferred..."
  30. [11:54:49] * Nine_Miles sits upright in his chair. "I understand the confusion. Considering that you were being payed for a job that is currently not being done, we saw it best to 'lay you off' from said job."
  31. [11:56:07] * Toffee_Latte blinks at Nine_Miles. "B-But Miss Chance and Bit are g-gonna be back in three days!"
  32. [11:57:13] <Toffee_Latte> "W-Wouldn't it have m-made more s-s-sense t-to simply suspend my pay o-or something?"
  33. [11:59:27] <Nine_Miles> "Calm down, Ms. Latte," he brings up a hoof. "I assume that you have read about the alternative employment opportunity from the letter?"
  34. [12:00:36] * Toffee_Latte nods slowly. "Y-Yeah... but... I'm only good at cooking..."
  35. [12:03:20] <Nine_Miles> "To be frank, Ms. Latte, I would recommend for you not use that attitude if you still want a job."

  38. [12:03:51] * Toffee_Latte blinks at Nine_Miles. "B-But I'm not... it's all I know how to do..."
  39. [12:07:47] <Nine_Miles> "Then adapt and overcome. Remember those words at the very least, Miss Latte," he pauses. Then he places his elbows on the table, rubbing his hooves together. "Hmm. Perhaps you misunderstood. A cook you shall remain, but you no longer cook for Miss Chance."

  54. [12:24:35] * Toffee_Latte nods to Nine_Miles, sighing softly. "A-Alright, when do I leave?"
  55. [12:28:08] <Nine_Miles> "But I haven't gotten to the details yet, Miss Latte." Once again, he sits up at attention. "We're not sending you across Equestria for a simple cooking routine. We're sending you because we need somepony on the inside."
  56. [12:28:58] * Toffee_Latte blinkiny blinks. "Wh-what? What do you mean o-on the 'inside'?"
  57. [12:34:22] <Nine_Miles> "C.E.P. Jenny Smooth has gone to Vanhoover to discuss business negotations with a competing firm, the Noctural Agency. However, Smoother Trotter Co. doesn't necessarily believe that the Nocts are being out right truthful with what they are giving Miss Smooth."
  58. [12:35:35] * Toffee_Latte nods to Nine_Miles. "A-Alright.. and you want me to do... what exactly?"
  59. [12:39:31] <Nine_Miles> "An operative will debrief you when you go to leave on the sky carriage. If what you say is true, how cooking is the only thing you're good at, then do it. You'll be better for it. Do you understand, Miss Latte?"

  61. [12:42:08] * Toffee_Latte nods to Nine_Miles, smiling a little. "Yeah, understood." She replies.

  74. [01:12:50] <Nyx_> "How much did the Fat Nine tell you, huh?"
  75. [01:14:09] * Toffee_Latte giggles softly at the nickname. "Only that I'm cooking for a pony named Vapor, who's part of the Noctrals." She replies to Nyx_.
  76. [01:22:03] <Nyx_> "I'm sure he did. Well, I'm going to give it to you straight. There's been a shift of power in the Nocts' leadership. All this happened overnight while Jenny was first over there. We don't know if the new ponies in charge are friendly or not. Because if they aren't, then Jenny's in trouble. Big trouble."
  77. [01:24:24] * Toffee_Latte widens her eyes. "Oh no..." She says to Nyx_. "What do I need to do?"
  78. [01:29:41] * Nyx_ smirks. "Do what you do best. You make good stuff, remember? That's your ticket in. You'll win the Nocts over. You'll be invited to cook at their grand meetings and dinners. There, you'll find out what they're planning and how."
  79. [01:31:28] * Toffee_Latte nods to Nyx_. "Right, understood!" She says, smiling. "I won't let Jenny down."
  80. [01:37:14] <Nyx_> "But be careful," she puts a hoof on Toffee's shoulder. "There's a lot of things about the Nocts that we don't know. And they just reek creepy. Be safe, you hear?"
  81. [01:38:59] * Toffee_Latte nods to Nyx_, smiling and hugging the mare briefly. "I will."
  82. [01:41:16] * Nyx_ hugs Toffee_Latte back. "Enjoy the flight. You might see there. You might not."
  83. [01:41:36] <Toffee_Latte> Paused
