  1. This paste aims to clarify some confusion over the rules for Pokemon Emerald Kaizo IronMON challenge runs.
  2.
  3. All general Kaizo rules apply. They can be found here: https://gist.github.com/valiant-code/adb18d248fa0fae7da6b639e2ee8f9c1
  4.
  5. The following are rules or clarifications that apply for Emerald specifically:
  6. 1. Trainer and wild Pokemon should be boosted by 60% (not 50%). To do this, follow the instructions at the bottom of this paste.
  7. 2. To win the challenge, you must defeat the Elite Four and Steven in Meteor Falls. Once you defeat the Elite Four, you cannot fight any trainers, pick up any items, or catch any Pokemon before battling Steven.
  8. 3. You cannot pick berries from berry trees.
  9. 4. You cannot refight any trainers using the Match Call feature. You also cannot fight Interviewers Gabby and Ty more than once per route.
  10. 5. You cannot travel to Slateport City until after defeating Brawly.
  11. 6. You cannot teach the TM that Wattson gives you for completing the New Mauville sidequest.
  12. 7. Some NPCs give you items once per day. You cannot receive more than one item from these NPCs.
  13. 8. You may choose to run the game with a dry battery in order to manipulate certain clock-based events (e.g., no rain on Routes 119/120/123). However, you cannot change the state of your battery in the middle of a run. In BizHawk, you can change the state of the battery by going to GBA --> Settings --> Sync Settings --> RTC (True or False).
  14. 9. Dungeons are defined as non-overworld areas that have multiple trainer battles accessible at the same time, with the exception of Petalburg Woods and Jagged Pass. Areas such as Rusturf Tunnel and Granite Cave are not considered dungeons, as they do not have two or more trainers accessible at the same time. A full list of dungeons can be found at the bottom of this paste.
  15. 10. If you accidentally battle a trainer you're not allowed to battle, you are allowed to lose intentionally and continue the run, but you must administer a "punishment" such as tossing a valuable item or skipping valuable experience. The punishment should be proportional to the value of the information gained during the battle (finding out a Pokemon has Perish Song in its final moveset would require a more severe punishment than finding out a Pokemon has a harmless attacking move that it will likely forget).
  16. 11. Tate & Liza must be completed using your main Pokemon and the gift Pokemon from the Weather Institute. The gift Pokemon must not be used in any battles outside the Mossdeep Gym. During the Tate & Liza battle, you must throw a ball on each of the gift Pokemon's turns. You may revive your gift Pokemon at any point in the Mossdeep Gym.
  17. 12. For all other double battles, your second Pokemon must be the first Pokemon you obtained in the run besides your main and Shedinja, and you must throw a ball on that Pokemon's turn. You may choose to kill your second Pokemon in order to give your main Pokemon more experience. If you decide to run your starter and thus need to catch a second Pokemon solely for HM use, you must catch the first Pokemon you saw on Route 101 besides Shedinja (use the IronMON tracker to check the order in which you saw the Pokemon).
  18. 13. You are not allowed to intentionally kill your HM friend against wild Pokemon. If you want to enter an HM-locked area with a fainted HM friend to avoid double battles, you must first find a double battle on which to kill it.
  19. 14. You may reset a run immediately after ending the first wild Pokemon battle (before Rival 1). You may not reset a run before ending the first wild Pokemon battle unless the only condition for ending the fight is Struggle.
  20. 15. If a wild Pokemon before Rival 1 traps you using a permanent trapping move such as Block (NOT Fire Spin, Wrap, etc.), you are allowed to kill it for experience with no penalty. You are not allowed to intentionally force encounters before Rival 1 against Pokemon that are known to have these moves.
  21. 16. If you play as the girl, you may only choose the left starter ball if it is selected randomly (most easily done using the tracker's random starter ball feature). You may not choose the left ball because you prefer it or because chat selected it. This is because the left ball gives an advantage on the first two Brendan fights by giving him worse AI.
  22. 17. You are not allowed to use banned moves in any circumstance, including the first two battles.
  23. 18. You may freely use the Weather Institute bed after you have cleared Team Aqua from the Weather Institute.
  24. 19. The run is not over if Wally's Zigzagoon loses to Ralts in the catch tutorial, even if the tracker says so.
  25. 20. You are allowed to check the stats and moves of any Pokemon that you will use in a battle. This includes all double battle partners and Steven's Pokemon at the Space Center.
  26.
  27. The following are clarifications to the general Kaizo ruleset:
  28. 1. You may "catch and release" a wild Pokemon only when you are trapped by a move such as Fire Spin or Block. You may not catch and release solely for the purpose of scouting a Sketch move.
  29. 2. If you accidentally gain experience from a wild Pokemon while you are scouting for a new main Pokemon (e.g., Explosion/Memento when you're too slow to escape), you must catch a new main Pokemon before leaving the area where you gained experience. If you accidentally gain experience in another situation (e.g., forgot to repel in the late game), you may continue on with no penalty.
  30. 3. You may not intentionally farm encounters against wild Pokemon for the purpose of baiting self-KO moves like Explosion and Memento.
  31. 4. If all three starters are banned Pokemon, you must reset the run.
  32. 5. If one of the starters is a favorite Pokemon, you may choose either the favorite or a randomly selected Pokemon. You may not choose any other Pokemon (e.g., if random ball is left and favorite is center, you can't choose right).
  33. 6. Using Nature Power to call Surf on sea battles is allowed.
  34. 7. Using Rain Dance when you have the ability Rain Dish is NOT allowed. Accidental heals using Rain Dish are allowed.
