  1. Bakumatsu Kourinden Oni (幕末降臨伝ONI)
  2. Walkthrough / Guide
  3.
  4. Platform: Snes / SFC
  5. Released: 02.02.1996
  6.
  7. Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-A2OJ-JPN)
  8.
  9.
  10.
  11. - The play time counter pauses while you're in the menu, so it's not
  12. going to be accurate.
  13. - The base damage calculation for physical attacks is ATP - DFP. After
  14. that, we have the random variables. The first one is a multiplier that
  15. increases damage at most by about 12%. The second one seems to be a
  16. simple +0~3. Criticals deal double damage (takes effect before the second
  17. random variable) and defending cuts damage by half (enemies in this game
  18. like to defend rather often).
  19. - Damage for spells is base + Int*4. The base values are listed in the
  20. misc. file. Your magic defense is Int*4. This value is simply subtracted
  21. from received spell damage. Enemies don't have an MDF value, but they
  22. may be resistant (25% damage) or immune to magic.
  23. - Elements work quite simply. There are 6 elements in three opposing pairs:
  24. Fire (F) <> Water (W), Lightning/Wind (T) <> Earth (E), Light (L) <> Dark (D).
  25. Enemies can have a certain elemental affinity, in which case their physical
  26. attack uses this element, they are immune to or absorb their own element,
  27. and take double damage from attacks that have the opposing element.
  28. - There are three different types of special attacks:
  29. × Houjutsu (essentially magic), learned by leveling up.
  30. × Kenjutsu, learned by leveling up the ultimate weapons.
  31. × Kamioroshi (summon spells), obtained through various tasks. Some can
  32. be taught to any character, while others are character-specific.
  33. - When casting magic, press up/down to switch between a single target
  34. and all targets.
  35. - Poison: 12,5% HP
  36. - Only humanoid(ish) enemies drop money.
  37. - Dead characters are automatically revived with 1 HP after battle.
  38. - When you level up, any leftover Exp is lost. Level up gains are randomized.
  39. - Many areas are arbitrarily deemed off-limits until you've reached a
  40. certain point in the game.
  41. - The game features a Karma system where certain actions increase or
  42. decrease your Karma rating. The game doesn't show the actual figure,
  43. just a title. Reaching max Karma can be tricky, as there's a finite
  44. amount of Karma you can gain, but there's some room for error.
  45. - The potency of some stat-boost items is affected by your Karma.
  46. HP,MP|SP
  47. Futsuu | 20 10
  48. Ii Hito | 24 12
  49. Zennin | 28 14
  50. Oerai | 32 16
  51. Odeekan | 36 18
  52. Sennin | 40 20
  53. Kamisama | 44 22
  54.
  55. - If your Karma title is Odeekansama or above, item drop rate is increased.
  56. - If your Karma title is Senninsama or above, you gain 50% more gold
  57. from enemies and summon spells gain a small damage boost (maybe a 10%
  58. increase in base power. Either way, not significant).
  59. - If / When the music gets too annoying, just go with the mute button.
  60. That's what I always do.
  61. - If a poisoned enemy runs away, the visual effect of the poison will
  62. still remain, even showing poison damage.
  63. - After some of the events in Shikoku, if you use an item in the small
  64. dock areas west of Okayama, north of Umibe no Mura, or north of Beppu,
  65. the game will crash.

  100. Party: Yamatomaru Lv1 \\\ Iida ||
  101. Items: Haha no Fumibako (Unq, Temp), Fushigi na Tsutsumi (Unq, Temp)
  102. Items (nc): (Ganyaku), Katana, (Yakusou)
  103. Inventory: 3× Yakusou
  104. Default (Yamatomaru): Takemitsu (Unique), Nuno Koromo (Unique)
  105. NPC: Naozane
  106. Shop:
  107. Kodachi 120 G Yakusou 4 G
  108. Katana 180 G Ganyaku 6 G
  109. Chakura 150 G Byakudankou 6 G
  110. Kinu no Koromo 140 G Mezame no Kona 6 G
  111. Zukin 100 G
  112. Kyahan 110 G
  113.
  114. - Items in brackets are items that will give you a Karma penalty (-2
  115. in most cases) should you choose to pick one up. For dialog choices,
  116. you need to choose 'Yes' unless otherwise noted.
  117. - Press Start in the menu to access the Config menu. You can change
  118. the text scrolling speed (set it to fast), window colors and the way
  119. you input commands during battle.
  120. - You can press Select to review your current objective, but unless you
  121. know a little Japanese, it won't really help you. Then again, you have
  122. this guide, so...
  123. - Go grab the chest in the little warehouse then return to your mother.
  124. - Afterwards, you can get Naozane (behind a tree) to join you as an NPC
  125. ally. NPC characters that join you will occasionally appear to help you
  126. in battle. Press Y in the menu to enter the NPC menu where you can
  127. activate NPCs or set them on standby. At most, you can have 8 NPCs
  128. active at any given time.
  129. - Make sure you save your game by the statue before heading out. Dying
  130. means restarting from the last save.
  131. - You can rest at your place by talking to your mother.
  132. - Note that, in most occasions, the d-pad has to be on neutral in order
  133. for A and B input to register.
  134. - Once you're prepared, head to the mountain northwest.
  135.
  136. \\\ Maruyama ||
  137. Items: Yakusou, Ganyaku, Doguu no Kakera (Artifact, Temp), Yakusou
  138. Boss: Biwabokuboku
  139. - A small area. You'll fight the boss when you enter the cave (choose
  140. 'Yes' or you'll lose karma).
  141.
  142. [Boss]
  143. - ~120 HP, 25 Exp, 160 G
  144.
  145. Items (nc): Suzukake, n× Yakusou \\\ Iida ||
  146. NPC: Yachiho
  147. - You'll fight a battle you can't win. After the event, go talk to your
  148. mother.
  149. - Afterwards, talk to your grandfather for the Suzukake.
  150.
  151. Item (nc): (Hayate no Tama) \\\ Toyama ||
  152. PC: Juurouta Lv5
  153. NPC: Koneko / Shibainu / Hiyoko a
  154. Default (Juurouta): Katana, Kinu no Koromo, Waraji (Unique)
  155. - An old man at the inn asks for a Yakusou (gain some Karma).
  156. - Talk to Juurouta. After she joins, it's possible to cross the bridge
  157. west to reach Kyou. There's some nice gear there, so go pick something
  158. up if you have the money. Either way, your next official destination
  159. is the mountain east.
  160.
  161. Items: Yakusou, Kyahan, Ganyaku, Seisui \\\ Minagamiyama ||
  162. - Good place to get money.
  163. - If you trigger an encounter in a specific spot, the graphics will
  164. glitch out a bit, but it'll go back to normal if you leave.
  165. - Check the wall where the demon entered to get inside. After the
  166. events, it's time to head to Kyou.
  167.
  168. \\\ Kyou ||
  169. Items (nc): (Izumi no Kami) (Unique), (500 G)
  170. Bosses: Nue, Oni & Kijo Momiji
  171. Shop:
  172. Yumiya 130 G Sashiko no Koromo 180 G
  173. Kakute 160 G Suzukake 450 G
  174. Nageyari 210 G Kusarikatabira 680 G
  175. Zangetsu 320 G Tokin 210 G
  176. Shakujou 280 G Kabuto 420 G
  177. Zantetsuken 440 G Kusarikyahan 330 G
  178. Hozutsu 3000 G
  179.
  180. Seisui 8 G Ranjatai 50 000 G
  181. Kitsuke 10 G Shunmin no Kona 4 G
  182.
  183. - This is the best gear you can buy in quite a while, so try to get it
  184. as soon as possible. You can pass up on the Hozutsu for now, but you'll
  185. eventually need one for an NPC. Get one Shunmin no Kona.
  186. - Head to the building with four guys blocking the entrance. After
  187. the event, you need to talk to the people inside (they'll temporarily
  188. join as NPCs) and fight a demon somewhere in town. You have to do them
  189. one at a time. Some of them are immune to physicals, so you need to use
  190. your spells.
  191. × Western bridge.
  192. × At the shrine on the northern side of town. (Nue: 50 xp, 240 G)
  193. × Talk to the woman in the item shop west, then check one of the boxes.
  194. × Talk to the woman in the house east of the building. Afterwards, you
  195. can ask the guy for the money he got, but this will reduce your Karma
  196. (choose 'No' to avoid it).
  197. × Talk to the monk at the other shrine on the north side of town.
  198. × Walk around the trees near the building. (Oni & Kijo Momiji: 100 xp, 320 G)
  199.
  200. - Once you're done with all of them, a new bridge will appear west of Kyou.
  201. - Taking the Izumi no Kami results in pretty heavy Karma loss.
  202.
  203. Item (nc): (Chikara no Tama) \\\ Izumo ||
  204. - Go down the hole in the remains to meet Natsume.
  205.
  206. \\\ Yatsukayama ||
  207. Items: Shiroshouzoku (Unique), Kujaku no Hane, Yakusou, Doguu no Kakera
  208. PC: Natsume Lv1
  209. Default (Natsume): Kodachi, Kinu no Koromo, Kanzashi (Unique)
  210. - This is the mountain just south of Izumo. As soon as you enter,
  211. Natsume will join the party.
  212. - You'll find an entrance to a cave, but you can't enter. After checking
  213. it, a new bridge will appear east of Toyama, allowing you to reach
  214. northern Honshuu. You can check it out if you want, but there's really
  215. nothing of interest there (aside from some dungeons and optional bosses
  216. you can't handle yet).
  217.
  218. NPC: Kanpei \\\ Kyou ||
  219. - You can now find Kanpei at the inn.
  220.
  221. \\\ Toyama ||
  222. - Talk to the man/woman(?) near the save point, then head to the shrine
  223. east.
  224.
  225. Items: Ninyaku, Yakusou, Kyahan \\\ Ooishi Jinja ||
  226. Item (nc): Mitamaishi (Unique, Temp)
  227. Boss: Ishi no Kami
  228. - Check one of the trees behind the shrine to find a hole.
  229.
  230. [Boss]
  231. - 210 Exp, Kongoujou (Unique, Temp)
  232.
  233. \\\ Nikkou ||
  234. - An old woman here asks you to take her to Edo (south of the village).
  235. Doing so should increase your Karma title for the first time (Iihito).
  236.
  237. Item (nc): (200 G) \\\ Edo ||
  238. NPCs: Kamonoseki, Densuke - 400 G, Kotarou - 200 G
  239. Shop: Kagerou no Suzu - 4 G
  240. - Get one Kagerou no Suzu.
  241. - Densuke is in the northwest corner, and Kotarou is in the southeast
  242. house. You need to get Densuke first if you want both (if you get
  243. Kotarou first, Densuke will refuse to join).
  244.
  245. Shop: Reishisou - 4 G \\\ Herai ||
  246. - You'll need one of these too.
  247. - This town is in north Honshuu.
  248.
  249. - There's a tough, optional boss in Hachinohe (the guy in the corner).
  250. Don't bother trying to beat him yet.
  251.
  252. NPC: Goemon - 300 G \\\ Yokohama ||
  253. Shop: Kujaku no Hane - 30 G
  254. Kamioroshi: Jizaiten
  255. - South from Toyama. If you go to the mountain nearby, you will die.
  256. - You can find Goemon in the inn.
  257. - The Kujaku no Hane allows you to warp to any town you've previously
  258. visited. At Lv25, Juurouta learns a spell that has the same effect.
  259. - Talk to the man hiding behind one of the lamps on the northern side
  260. of town, then check the lamp closest to the southwest entrance. Offer
  261. the following five items to it, and you'll obtain your first summon
  262. spell, Jizaiten.
  263. 1. Yakusou
  264. 2. Seisui
  265. 3. Shunmin no Kona
  266. 4. Kagerou no Suzu
  267. 5. Reishisou
  268.
  269. - Jizaiten (45 MP): Wind \ all. (550)
  270. - Natsume is a great choice for the summon spells that aren't character-
  271. specific, as she doesn't learn any normal spells until late in the game.
  272.
  273. Items: Kusarikyahan, Ninyaku \\\ Houjuyama ||
  274. NPC: Akane
  275. - This one's southwest of Herai.
  276. - Try to enter the warehouse, then talk to the monk inside the shrine.
  277. - Go through the hidden passage in the shrine to find Akane.
  278.
  279. Items: Kakure Mino, Kitsuke, Seisui \\\ Hieizan ||
  280. Item (nc): Seika (Unique, Temp)
  281. NPC: Midori - Ninyaku
  282. - East of Izumo.
  283. - Using a Kakure Mino prevents random encounters for about 240 steps.
  284. The effect wears off if you move to another area.
  285. - Talk to the monk to get the Seika.
  286.
  287. \\\ Houjuyama ||
  288. Items: (Kunai), (Kin no Kanzashi) (Unique), Seihousui, Ninyaku,
  289. Kujaku no Hane
  290. Items (nc): Kura no Kagi (Unique, Temp), Oodenta (Unique)
  291. - Take the Seika to the monk, and you'll temporarily gain access to the
  292. warehouse and the cave within (step on where the seal was to enter the
  293. cave). Opening the chests in the warehouse results in Karma loss.
  294. - At the end, you'll receive the Oodenta, Juurouta's ultimate weapon.
  295. The ultimate weapons are weapons that can be leveled up and very much
  296. require you to do so in order for them to live up to their name.
  297. Leveling them up also allows you to learn Kenjutsu. Having one of
  298. these weapons equipped halves the amount of Exp the character gains,
  299. although the weapon still gains the full amount.
  300. - Kenjutsu consumes SP. You recover 1 SP per step. There are also items
  301. that recover SP, but you won't be able to buy them until late in the game.
  302. - Return the key to the monk before leaving the mountain or you'll lose
  303. a fair bit of Karma. Returning it increases your Karma a little.
  304. If you leave with the key, you can still go back to return it, and
  305. (probably) gain the same amount of Karma as when you return it without
  306. leaving, but you'll still end up with Karma lost.
  307.
  308. \\\ Rokkou ||
  309. NPCs: Ichi no Deshi, Ni no Deshi, San no Deshi
  310. - Visit Juurouta's home for an event, then head for Rokkou Arechi
  311. (the little brown spot just south of town).
  312. - Don't forget that you can press Y in the menu to customize the NPC setup.
  313.
  314. Item (nc): Juzumaru (Unique) \\\ Rokkou Arechi ||
  315. - Go through the events to score your second ultimate weapon (Tenka Goken).
  316.
  317. \\\ Nikkou ||
  318. - Go talk to the elder and you'll be taken to the mountain.
  319.
  320. Items: Kintan, Sashiko no Koromo \\\ Futarayama ||
  321. Item (nc): Aoi Houju (Unique, Temp)
  322. Default (Touya): Zantetsuken, Kusarikatabira, Kusarikyahan
  323. TPC: Touya Lv17
  324. Boss: Sarugami
  325.
  326. [Boss]
  327. - 448 HP, 200 Exp, 350 G
  328.
  329. - Afterwards, Touya joins the party. He will eventually be replaced by
  330. Squanto after taking an arrow in the knee.
  331.
  332. \\\ Izumo ||
  333. - As you enter, Natsume asks if you could stop to rest. Doing so may
  334. trigger a flashback scene involving Natsume and her brothers. There are
  335. a few different ones, and you can even trigger the same one multiple
  336. times. These are all optional, however, and don't seem to have an
  337. impact on anything.
  338.
  339. Items: Nageyari, Kunai, Kitsuke, Kakure Mino \\\ Yatsukayama ||
  340. Item (nc): Magatama (Unique, Temp)
  341.
  342. - Once you're done at Yatsukayama, go to the little dock at the west
  343. end of Honshuu to catch a boat to Kyuushuu.
  344.
  345. Kamioroshi: Shiisaa \\\ Shrine ||
  346. - This is the shrine west of the dock. Check one of the dog statues
  347. to receive Shiisaa.
  348. × Shiisaa (30 MP): Increase Int of all characters by 10-15%.
  349.
  350. NPC: Ittanmomen \\\ Shrine ||
  351. - This is the shrine south of the dock. Although Ittanmomen uses an
  352. NPC slot, he won't actually appear in battle. Instead, you can ride
  353. him on the world map by pressing Start. There will be no encounters
  354. while riding. You can't ride across the ocean or over mountains.
  355.
  356. Kamioroshi: Inarishin \\\ Kagoshima ||
  357. Shop: Kunai - 20 G
  358. - Get some Kunais (150+ pod). They're pretty good against bosses.
  359. - You can get Inarishin by talking to the guy near the fox. This will
  360. also increase your Karma.
  361. × Inarishin (30 MP): Increase ATP of all characters by 10%.
  362. - There's an old woman who asks for a Kintan in one of the houses.
  363. - Karma title up (Iihito -> Zennin).
  364.
  365. NPC: Okuni - 800 G \\\ Takachiho ||
  366. Shop:

  379. Items: Yumemi no Koromo (Unique), Genji no Yoroi, Ninyaku
  380. Item (nc): Mikazuki (Unique)
  381. NPC: Hebiyoukai
  382. Bosses: Hebiyoukai, 2× Ihika
  383. - This place is just north of Takachiho. You'll fight the first boss
  384. as soon as you enter.
  385.
  386. [Boss]
  387. - 1240 HP, 250 Exp, 200 G, W:F, I:W
  388.
  389. - You'll be taken back to the world map. Return to town to heal and
  390. save. When you go back, you'll be taken into the dungeon and won't be
  391. able to leave until you're done there.
  392. - Soon after passing through the underwater section, you'll obtain
  393. Natsume's ultimate weapon, the Mikazuki.
  394.
  395. [Boss]
  396. - 616 HP, 500 Exp, 400 G, I:M
  397.
  398. - Use the pad you saw earlier to warp out. You won't be able to return here.
  399.
  400. NPC: Kourai \\\ Shrine ||
  401. - This one's west of Okayama.
  402.
  403. Items: Kujaku no Hane, Seihousui \\\ Toowariyama ||
  404. - North of Herai.
  405. - The Yagyousans are very annoying, as they're immune to physicals and
  406. spam your entire party with a number of status ailments. I suggest using
  407. summons or Kemuridamas. You can't buy Kemuridamas (yet), but you should
  408. have gotten some from fighting Karakasas.
  409. - Check the box twice.
  410.
  411. \\\ Herai ||
  412. - Talk to the old woman in the northwest house.
  413.
  414. Item: Doguu no Kakera \\\ Derarezu no Mori ||

  420. Kamioroshi: Shakouki Doguu, Kushinadahime
  421. Bosses: Hebiyoukai, Hebiyoukai
  422. - Assuming you've found all 3 Doguu no Kakeras, take them to a guy here
  423. to get Doguu.
  424. × Shakouki Doguu (45 MP, Juurouta): Earth-elemental magic \ all.
  425. - Next, talk to woman northwest and take care of the two Hebiyoukais
  426. (they're the same as the one you fought before) to obtain Kushinadahime.
  427. × Kushinadahime (45 MP, Yamatomaru): Water-elemental magic \ all.
