  1. "I don't understand birthdays," she said, eyeing the girl and her practically visible alcohol stink. "Why is this day an event?"
  2.
  3. "Cuz 'm one year older," she murmurs, pressing the glass of burning to her lips.
  4.
  5. "I thought they were supposed to be occasions of celebration."
  6.
  7. "Mhm."
  8.
  9. Felix stares at his sister for a moment, and then pries the amber from her long fingers and quickly takes a drink before she can stop him.
  10.
  11. He quickly spits it out. "You are terrible at celebrating things."
  12.
  13. It takes Miss MacMathan a moment to process her loss of liquid refreshment. It's a horrified moment. "What are you doing?"
  14.
  15. "Irrelevent. You are terrible at celebrating things. We are going to do something fun on this arbitrary day of celebration."
  16.
  17. "No." Petulantly, Caelan crosses her arms. "I refuse."
  18.
  19. "Why."
  20.
  21. "Cuz."
  22.
  23. "Inacceptable and inexcusable answer. We will be putting this away and finding some pastime of enjoyment. Perhaps I will find Sam and -- "
  24.
  25. Immediatly Caelan's cheeks color, and she tackles the smaller boy, trying to either prevent him from leaving or to reclaim her alcohol, it isn't entirely clear from the motion which it's supposed to be. Of course, the gesture is almost entirely ineffectual, considering how in the resulting struggle the glass is spilled all over Felix's rather nice white shirt.
  26.
  27. There's a pause as the two of them consider the situation. Felix is pressed against the bed, his short white hair blending in with the pressed off white sheets. Caelan has her hands firmly on his shoulders, her dark brown hair tickling her cheeks as she stares down at him, her face reddened from alcohol, embarrassment, and exertion. Her breath stinks and his shirt stinks and the glass has rolled off somewhere.
  28.
  29. "I do not see how cake and presents factor into this. Have I been mislead about the nature of birthdays?"
  30.
  31. "No, I'm just terrible. Here, lemme get that offa ya..."
  32.
  33. Caelan begins fiddling with the buttons.
  34.
  35. "...I'm... capable of undressing myself."
  36.
  37. "Well, yeah, but..." she sways a little.
  38.
  39. "..."
  40.
  41. "..."
  42.
  43. There's a disoriented pause.
  44.
  45. "...I'm going to get Sam. Or Agatha. Or someone who can deal with this better than me."
  46.
  47. "No."
  48.
  49. "..."
  50.
  51. "..."
  52.
  53. After that Felix decides it's time to struggle some more, and damn his body being small and tiny and weak and damn his sister for being a giant and being strong and being able to pin him and he starts to kick and shout, and Caelan shouts back he thinks, but he starts shouting louder and then the door opens and they pause again.
  54.
  55. "Oh. Hello Sam," both say in varying states of sobriety, while still in their rather compromising position.
