After the death of their friend, several people discover that they are being hunted down by demons for sins they committed in the past: Each of them had killed someone before, whether it be intentional or accidental, planned or spontaneous... No matter how it happened, they're paying for what they've done. Desperate to avoid an eternity in Hell, the murderers, dubbed the "Sinners", do whatever they can to save themselves, bringing a nearby church group in to help them.

Born in the city of Los Angeles, and travelling often, Gail Athens (Sarah Paulson) experienced tragedy when her mother, Lillian (Andrea Roth), died in a car crash only two years ago, leaving Gail to inherit millions. Joined by her aunt Victoria (Glenn Close) and her cousin Sarah (Kate Mara), Gail finds herself full of company. Constantly visiting Gail are Justine (Emma Roberts) and Claire (Taissa Farmiga), young partygoers that used to be babysat by Victoria as infants, who often look to Gail and her friend Bridgette (Lizzie Brocheré) for adult advice. Bridgette lives with her husband Jeff (Dylan McDermott), who often visits his brother and sister, Nathan (Zachary Quinto) and Melanie (Jamie Brewer), along with Nathan's wife Kate (Azura Skye). However, Bridgette is often tormented by her overbearing, critical mother, Cynthia (Frances Conroy), who never seems to know when to let up on Bridgette. Justine, being young and restless, also experiences trouble, being torn between her current boyfriend Tony (Evan Peters) and a developing crush, Brad (Gray Damon). Often hanging around with Gail and Bridgette is Faith Glass (Lily Rabe), a religious "do-gooder" who is seen as a sweet young girl by Victoria and her friend Erika (Angela Bassett). Faith's younger, promiscuous step-sister, Olivia Tobey (Riley Voelkel), often goes out with Justine and Claire, and is currently dating Justine's older brother Jake (Teddy Sears). And finally, there's Beth (Chloë Sevigny), a friend of Sarah's who often spends time with Gail and Bridgette.
Despite their personal quarrels, everyone faces trouble when their friend Tyler (Chace Crawford) is found dead, torn apart by an unknown assailant. Facing emotional chaos and immense feelings of guilt, made only worse by incessant Hellish visions, Gail, Justine, Bridgette, Tony, Jeff, Claire, Brad, Olivia, Faith and Nathan all open up to each other, revealing their dirty secrets, praying they can escape the same fate as Tyler.
